I've always said that gambling was inherent to being a human being. Whether we're playing blackjack, opening a restaurant, buying insurance, starting a new job, writing a novel, or even crossing the street, we're gambling.
Humans assess the risk/reward of situations that they're confronted with and look for the optimal return based on the risk. Whether you're a strict Christian or a card-carrying atheist, you gamble. Heck, opening a new church in a small town is a form of gambling.
In an article which I find quite interesting for a number of reasons, chimpanzees, who have the most similarities to humans genetically, also gamble. Link to article below picture:
