That little enclave on the South China Sea saw 23% visitor growth last year and is poised to leapfrog past Hong Kong this year. It's a piece of good news that might (or should) allay Wall Street's recent jitters about U.S. casino companies with a Macanese presence.
And while financing for many Strip projects has dried up, there's plenty of capital flowing to Macao. But surely, for $1.55 billion, someone as artistically inclined as Steve Wynn can come up with a more evocative resort name than "Wynn Diamond Suites" for his next Chinese casino. With a moniker like that, it sounds like a motel on Boulder Highway.
Reuters' story makes interesting reading, if perhaps not as intriguing as, '"What are you doing here?": man asks wife at brothel' ... surely the headline of the week. Oh, and it's snowing in Baghdad. Really. (Does this mean Hell has finally frozen over?)
Then there's the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek customer-service rep who gave out $570,000 in comps, mostly to elderly and disabled customers. Which would be sweet, except she wasn't supposed to. Which makes it grand theft.
"Velez [who moonlighted as a professional boxer] said she had come to view her customers as family and gave them vouchers to keep them happy," reports the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. What's more, this modern-day Robin Hood managed to get away with it for six months. Holy internal audit, Batman!
