Washington politicians remain in denial but consumers are tightening their purse strings ... at least the strings on the gambling purse. Nevada, New Jersey and Iowa just posted less-than-stellar revenue numbers. Unlike those from Jersey and Nevada, Iowa's are up, but only on the strength of one-third of the state's non-tribal casinos. The other two-thirds are down. Iowa is considering adding two more casino licenses, but this hardly seems like the time to dilute the Hawkeye State market.
Whatever the reason, discretionary dollars are clearly being hoarded more closely, at least for the moment. (Nevada took a bath on baccarat, further depressing its revenue numbers.) And with gas prices hovering in the $3-$4/gallon range, who can blame the player who thinks twice before motoring down to Shorty's Belle of Bettendorf Gamblin' Hall, Resort & Spa or wherever?
Oh, the horror! The San Francisco Chronicle wrings its hands at the thought of expanded tribal casinos in California. I spent my Christmas vacation in California and saw roadside destitution near Yermo, had my innards jarred and jostled by countless potholes on Los Angeles' roads, and witnessed mobs of homeless people roaming the streets (not the sidewalks, the streets) a few blocks from downtown L.A. Without question, the Golden State can use all the economic stimulus it can get.
Cosmology: The Cosmopolitan Resort & Casino has been awfully quiet of late. CFO Audrey Oswell just skeddadled up the street to competitor Fontainbleau. Does this betoken problems at the Cosmo? Liz Benston has the skinny.
Golden Glop: Has there ever been a more pathetic hour of television than NBC's "Golden Globe Awards Announcement" show last night? It was tear-out-your-hair lame. Now I know how Elvis felt when he shot out that TV set at the Las Vegas Hilton. Nor does it look like the Globes will significantly move the betting line on the Oscars, just solidify it.
