Sheldon Adelson,Election
Yesterday, S&G cited news sources that placed the election outlays of Sheldon Adelson's Freedom's Watch in the $30 million range. Hardly tuppence, even if a far cry from the $200 million the '527' had threatened to unleash.
Turns out, it's a lot worse than that, at least for anybody counting on Freedom's Watch to come to their aid. The group's May-September expenditures were only $40,000 and it "has been MIA during the presidential election." (In fairness to Adelson, he and Las Vegas Sands President William Weidner have bundled $100K-$250K for Sen. John McCain's presidential bid, according to the New York Times.)
To the extent that he expresses his priorities through Freedom's Watch, Adelson has evidently decided to go the "think globally, act locally" route. His 527 raised eyebrows earlier this year by firing off some quixotic salvos at Rep. Shelley Berkley. She's got the very definition of a "safe" district and hasn't faced a serious challenge since before the millennium, but she and Adelson have a feud that goes way back.
More recently, Freedom's Watch has weighed in on the GOP side of the Dina Titus (D) vs. Rep. Jon Porter (R) mud-wrestling match for Nevada's Third Congressional District. In probably the most lopsided "air war" since Desert Storm, Adelson has lobbed a few missiles on Porter's behalf and has just launched another one, as you can see. (Freedom's Watch also unveiled an ad for the North Carolina market today, in an effort to save Sen. Elizabeth Dole's seat; Dole trails her Democratic challenger by two points.)
Over at the Freedom's Watch Web site, there's a lead item about the national-debt clock running out of digits and a jab at Steve Wynn, but otherwise little that would give one the sense that we're nearing the climax of an exceptionally heated election campaign. Whether by choice or financial necessity, Adelson has chosen to conserve his ammo.
