The Strip
On newsstands now is Las Vegas Weekly's special nightclub issue (as opposed to the 51 other nightclub-centric issues LVW publishes every year). "Bottle service killed Vegas nightlife," contends one article. If bad publicity and IRS scrutiny can't curb the brazen attitude of the Strip club-ocracy, the faltering economy just might. At the very least, it's causing club owners to -- and this may be a Sign of the Apocalypse -- offer free drinks.
The fact that many, many people pay good money to get into a nightclub should hardly be taken a license to shake those customers down for every last nickel they possess. That should go without saying. But that's what's happened. The understandable allure of the club scene -- especially the added frisson of rubbing elbows with glitterati -- has led to remarkable arrogance on the part of club management and staff, by all accounts. It's high time the pendulum swung the customers' way.
The LVW cover package also includes an amusing nightclub mortuary. Ironically, one of the clubs whose gravesite is visited is Bikinis, at The Rio, which gave way to Lucky Strike Lanes -- which closed Sept. 30. It's as if the casino gods were saying, "From a nightclub you came and to a nightclub you shall return." I'd put money on it.
I want to know who was walking along the pathway connecting Venetian to it's sky bridge and thought "you know what people coming and going between us and Treasure Island want most? A night club right here!"
And Rio also had Club Rio, which became the Prince venue which may or may not also count as a nightclub (don't know, didn't pay attention), and it's now who knows what.
