Election
As I said before, we ought to cut the guy some slack on his casino-industry donations (which the Center for Responsive Politics puts in the vicinty of $1 million, and which have spawned both a sloppy CBS News report and at least two attack ads).
Besides, it's not like he couldn't use the money. Today's USA Today reports, by way of CRP, that McCain's Democratic opponent has out-raised McCain from the new-tech (by an over three-to-one margin), pharmaceutical, miscellaneous-business, health care, communications, real estate and banking sectors.
He also counts twice as many CEOs as supporters, one of whom explains it thusly: "I would rather pay a little higher tax on a higher profit than a lower tax rate on lower profits." McCain still bests Obama in GOP strongholds like energy, agribusiness, the defense industry, transportation and construction.
Give props to McCain spokesman Brian Rogers for this snappy comeback: "I guess [Obama] can't accuse us of being the candidate of big business." Besides, when you look at the $79 million in donations enumerated on USA Today's (not all-inclusive) bar graph, the $1.13 million the casino industry has split between Messrs. McCain and Obama looks so piddling it barely qualifies as walking-around money.
