By shutting down construction of its retail mall and hotel in Bethlehem, Pa., Las Vegas Sands has been able to pour all of its workforce into finishing the casino. Which means that the facility could be ready to open by Memorial Day weekend (i.e., a month ahead of schedule), maybe even by May Day.
Or not. As The Morning Call reports, Sands' burst of activity could effect an infrastructural and regulatory traffic jam, especially with Meadows Racetrack & Casino, near Pittsburgh, already slotted for a late-May opening. Also, there's some question as to whether all the slots and other casino doohickeys could be loaded in at Sands' breakneck pace.
Looking on the bright side, construction workers whose meal tickets ran out last week will be needed again. And the city is sure to love it, because every day that Sands Bethelehem is open earlier than planned means $25K in "host fees" (yes, per day) that Mayor John Callahan hadn't expected to receive.
At some point, Sands will have to revisit and finish its retail and hotel* projects, which it's contractually bound to complete. It can, however, walk away from a planned event center, if it so chooses -- which might finally give its shareholders something about which to smile.
* -- or "300 hotels [sic] rooms," as the official site puts it
