There's not a lot to smile about in Nevada these days, so thank God for Gov. Jim Gibbons, the gift that keeps on giving. Although Midnight Jim was part of a tableau vivant at a GOP governors' summit on Sept. 4, he's been mysteriously cropped out of the official version (sort like what happened to party officials who fell from favor with Stalin). They managed to find room for Nebraska's Gov. Dave Heineman, but The Gibber ... not so much.
Compounding insult with injury, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki evidently doesn't care to stick around for Term II of the Carson City Follies. He's got his sights set on Sen. Harry Reid's (D-NV) seat.
Prescription from Dr. Pangloss. According to Arthur Laffer, one of the Santeria priests of voodoo economics, Nevadans are living in the best of all possible worlds. The Review-Journal sent a stenographer to transcribe Laffer's Bellagio stand-up gig yesterday, from which was culled this Laff-line: "Nevada is doing a beautiful job. If you stick to your guns, you'll come out [of the recession] better off than the rest of the country."
