Las Vegas Sands prexy William Weidner, in the course of receiving an award from the Anti-Defamation League, used the occasion to deliver a pro-McCain or (depending on who's doing the telling) anti-Obama speech last week. Apparently it made some waves, although how many and how big is a matter of heated dispute (see "Comments"). Whether or not it was the measured and analytical speech some describe, Bill "All Chinese look alike" Weidner does have a history of head-scratching pronouncements.
Try as I can, it's impossible to cease being taken aback by a bizarre rant Weidner delivered to a 2005 gathering of the Nevada Society of CPAs. He ripped Las Vegas several new ones as a "hubristic" and hostile place to do business -- especially as compared to the supposedly enlightened bidness climate to be found in Communist China. Whereupon he hopped a plane to Peking -- having repeatedly informed the audience that he had a jet ready and waiting on the tarmac, and that the assembled CPAs (who had paid for the privilege of hearing Weidner speak) were delaying his departure.
Four successive visa restrictions later, I wonder how Weidner feels about that supposedly business-friendly climate in Macao (and if he's sore, I wouldn't blame him). At least it looks like the ChiComms may wise up and ease their strangulation of the Macanese economy.
