Every so often, you get a press release that's too good of a target to pass up. Such was the case when Mohegan Sun e-mailed me its announcement of "An Intimate Evening of Grand Illusion" with David Copperfield. Now, if I were Copperfield or his handlers, right about now would be the last time the words "Intimate" and "Copperfield" should appear in the same sentence. Call it "ill-judged" at best.
In the press release, Copperfield also takes credit for the success of Criss Angel and David Blaine. Good. Now we know who to blame the next time one of those two shows up in the tabloids.
Penn Jillette said it best when he described Blaine's "magic" as "the kind of stuff Siegfried & Roy stopped doing when they were 12." As for Angel's freakiness, it hasn't kept him scoring with über-babes like Minnie Driver and Cameron Diaz, though both appear to have been sufficiently mindfreaked by now.
Oddly enough, I could find no copy of the press release, nor any advertisement on his "intimate" evening on the Mohegan Sun Web site, at least for now.
