Election
You'd almost think the New York Times and Sen. John McCain were in cahoots. The NYT's much-criticized (even on the left) story about Sen. McCain's friendlier-than-believed relationship with the lobbyist community scored a hat-trick for the presidential candidate. The Times held the story at a juncture (just before the New Hampshire primary) when it could have hurt McCain the most, instead releasing when it could do him the most good.
By running it when they did, Times editors (who endorsed McCain in the New York primary) rallied anti-McCain conservatives to the candidate's standard, sparked by their hatred of the big, mean newspaper. And McCain's primary-campaign funds, which were petering out, have been refreshed with new geysers of cash.
So let's recap: In addition to granting McCain a pre-New Hampshire reprieve, the NYT has A) put him at the forefront of the news cycle just as the Republican race was losing interest; B) reignited his fundraising and C) won him the newfound lurve of arch-conservatives for whom the only greater threat to America than McCain is the Gray Lady. Times shoots, McCain scores!
I imagine that Sen. McCain spent his weekend penning Times Editor Bill Keller a "thank you" note.
Note to the chattering classes: Need something fresh to write vis-a-vis McCain? How about asking the candidate -- famous/notorious for his opposition to betting on collegiate sports -- what he thinks about the push for state-sanctioned sports books in Delaware and New Jersey? And would he advocate federal intervention, if he became president?
