GamingFloor.com Editor Ian Sutton thinks there may be rivalry a-brewin' regarding the International Casino Exhibition, a major fixture of the gaming industry calendar. Regarding this week's purchase of ICE presenter Clarion Events by Veronis Suhler Stevenson (VSS), Sutton writes:
"It's noticeable that the show dates for G2E have progressively become later in the year and in 2008/9 there will be only 2 months separating G2E and ICE. I have a feeling that this may well be the catalyst for the establishment of a rival 'European' casino show. London is now very expensive and there are more suitable venues than the ageing Earls Court. It could be interesting, and if there's one thing that suppliers always agree upon it's that the cost of exhibiting their products is far too high."
When it comes to handling its casino-industry product, VSS isn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier. (I should know; I used to work for the men who basically ran the World Gaming Congress straight into a brick wall -- a brick wall by the name of Frank J. Fahrenkopf.) If the minds behind G2E get it into their heads to give ICE a run for its money, VSS will have a real problem on its hands.
