In case you're wondering why I'm so vexed at Nevada's god-awful governor and his callous attitude toward the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada scandal (fostered, by all accounts, by one of his own campaign contributors), let me remind you that our own Jean Scott is among the 40,000 people currently at risk because of ECSN's assembly-line methods.
So when The Gibber says something like, “We do not have enough highway patrolmen to stop everybody who makes a mistake. We could inspect [surgical centers] annually and then pretty soon, have we done overkill?”, it makes me want to take a swing at the guy. I mean, he's shrugging away the emotional pain and suffering of someone known and loved by everyone at LVA, and doing it with a flippancy that makes you want to tear your hair out.
Then there's "the revelation that he opposed raising fees last year to pay for more health inspectors." Thanks, Guv. You opposed something that could mean the difference between life or death for your own constituents. Nice. And annual inspections? Phooey! Who needs 'em, Gibbons asks.
[Digression: Does this mean Gibbons favor less oversight of casinos, too? Just wondering.]
And "better training" of clinic staff isn't going to be helped if they're being hounded along by the boss to handle twice as many patients as normal, badgered to cut as many corners as possible (allegedly).
State Sen. Joe Heck has the right idea, so let's hope he makes a safe return from Iraq, where -- he notes -- even exigent conditions haven't led to a comparable "blatant disregard for safety." And now the CDC has been called in. (Note: Gibbons' former right-hand man Robert Uithoven is now advising Heck. Could Heck be positioning himself to challenge The Gibber in 2010?)
In the meantime, please remember the "Queen of Comps" in your prayers.
