Election
Yeah, we can put that "Silver State" moniker away, maybe donate it to one of our handful of museums. Why? Because a bipartisan group of numbskulls, collectively known as the 2007 Nevada Legislature and the Gibbons administration didn't budget enough money for protecting presidential candidates -- in an election year, fer crissakes!
Seems the Department of Public Safety's measly $5K allotment was gobbled up by (irony of ironies) a local tub-thumping appearance by Bush II*, while another $18K was spent in January, thanks to the pushed-forward Democratic caucuses. Contingency funds have been released to tide us over until November (eight long months away, folks) but that's no excuse for the Lege's lack of foresight. They've earned a spot in the Dimbulb Hall of Fame, right alongside Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas, who forgot to include the cost of November's election in his 2008 budget. Way to go, dude.
* -- If Jeb Bush, having wisely chosen to sit out '08 (the Bush "brand" having exhausted most of its electoral equity) were to run in '12 against, say, either Obama or Clinton II, would that make him Bush III or Bush IIa? These lines of succession are so vexing. (Praise be that neither of the Clintons has a sibling with political aspirations.)
