Per yesterday's item on the reprieve granted to The Reading Room at Mandalay Bay, a Los Angeles-based reader writes:
Just got back from Mandalay Bay ... it appeared to me that the whole Mandalay Place is not doing so well. The wine store is closed, there was another storefront closed right around there, and there's very little foot traffic, even on a weekend. I was getting a whiff of that "failing mall" desperation smell. There isn't much [cachet] to any of the places there. Only busy places are the Burger Bar and the Starbucks.
The other observation I had from my week there was the complete invisibility of Palazzo. Can't tell you how many times people asked "what's Palazzo? "when I mentioned it (either that or "did you say Bellagio?"). I like the place, but they better do something about it. Their marketing here in LA is terrible.
Thanks for reading ... and responding.
Who'da thought it? Having belatedly acknowledged the existence of television, rock music, fashion and even that newfangled club scene, the Las Vegas Review-Journal welcomes back trenchant entertainment writer Doug Elfman, who'll be spelling an overworked-sounding Norm(!) Clarke. Not only that, Elfman's new blog is the first Web page in R-J history that could be described as "elegant."
Speaking of writers named Clarke, it is my sad duty to announce the passing of Arthur C. Clarke, a man who was ahead of his time in many ways. He leaves behind a daunting corpus of work that includes co-scripting the greatest, most believeable science fiction film ever. Full stop.
