Penny-pinching at Harrah's?

That's what one reader says. If this experience is typical, the bean-counters at Apollo Management and TPG are hard at work, precisely in the way some feared -- and premium players aren't exempt. (Welcome to the wonderful world of highly leveraged private-equity buyouts.) A few elisions have been made to the letter, partly to protect the sender's identity:

We’ve been Diamond [level] since its inception, and I’ve never seen anything like it. We were in Vegas [earlier this month] and while we were there we went by the Diamond Room three our four times. (a) They have eliminated all premium alcohol; (b) the only food served the entire day is chips and dips and some tough frozen chicken legs; and (c) EVERY DAY THE FOOD WAS EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE DAY BEFORE!! Harrah’s says they cut back because they had individuals who were abusing the room by staying there for hours at a time. While that may be true, you’re gonna punish all the rest of your best customers?  Ha!  This was strictly economics. True, Harrah’s is probably the only casino chain that offers this perk, but gimme a break. What they provide in the way of these rooms is nothing compared to what we spend at Harrah’s each year.

I will say that our host is a great person, and we treat him that way.  He was able to comp everything for this trip, which was probably $200-300 above our “points” total, including $192.00 in points left over from a previous trip I made by myself. So, it is true that the hosts have some discretion in this way, contrary to what may have been printed in other sources in the past about their comp program.

Also, you already know about the newspaper issue. What you may not know is that during our stay we did not receive even a USA Today newspaper at the door….nothing, nada.

And although their food prices are lower than their other properties for the most part, they keep increasing. Seems printing new menus every month must be worth it, ha! Pretty soon the only customers who will be able to afford to eat there will be those who are relying on comps….similar to the prices in the gift shops….get a Diamond discount and only pay 30 percent above retail!

Finally, from my vantage point, I believe they have really tightened up their slots. Although I play mostly VP and BJ, I like to play a little Wheel or Price is Right, etc. I can see over a period of time (last six months or so) that these are REALLY tight.  And as we all know, their VP schedules suck.  I continue to play there as long as the total comps cover any losses, and so far they do, but as I’ve said, they are gradually nickel and diming their best customers to death.

David Van Gelder's Gravatar You are so right. We were ther early May and could not believe it when there was no paper, also the chips and dip in the Diamond lounge was unsettling. Additionally, they have upped the requirement to become a Diamond player from 10,000 to 11,000. Yes, the VP schedules suck, but I play for the quads so not much affect on me, tho it would be nice to see some really good schedules. What would it hurt? May even draw in some locals.
