After paying one last, doleful visit to the Luxor IMAX theater on Saturday (for a double-bill of Lions of the Kalahari and Mystery of the Nile), we partook of the attraction-plus-buffet "special." How special was it? Not very.
Seriously, the Luxor buffet, More, is a "me too" affair that hardly warrants a $20 dinner tab. The desert array is above average (we opted for the chocolate-chip cheesecake and regular chocolate cake, with its admirably thick slab of frosting). Everything else, both in terms of quantity and variety, was distinctly underwhelming. The short ribs are worth having -- and definitely to be preferred to the tough "steak" in the Mexican section. Even starving wolves might give it a pass. If you're going to make such a half-hearted job of it, why even bother having a buffet at all?
Factor in a sparse crowd and crepuscular lighting, and it all made for a fairly funereal eating experience. Given Luxor's tomb-inspired design and soon-to-leave King Tut exhibit, that's not wholly inapt ... especially as the morbidity quotient is certain to be upped by the arrival of the Bodies and Titanic exhibits from the Tropicana.
It would be unfair, though, not to mention the frequency and friendliness of our servers. I don't know how they keep their spirits up working in that dark and sunken space, but more power to them.
And speaking of the Ex, their buffet was ratcheted up to the same price as Luxor for lunch. Really?
