" ... and all I got was this lousy kick in the pants from the Massachusetts Lege."
South Coast Today.com has tallied the lobbying expenditures from a failed casino push in the last Legislature and it sets a new record for pro-casino spending the Bay State, doubling what the industry invested in lobbying back in the halcyon days when William Weld was running the state (although those numbers may have been lowballed: the laws for registering as a lobbyist in Massachusetts were looser back then).
The big spenders were (drum roll, please) ...
Suffolk Downs: $500,000
The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe: $221,000
Trump Entertainment Resorts: $162,000
The Wampanoag Tribe of Aquinnah: $120,000
Harrah's Entertainment: $87,500
Northeast Gaming Group: $45,000
Mohegan Sun: $21,000
Suffolk Downs was particularly catholic with its expenditures, spreading them across seven lobbying firms. Given the high profile of Sheldon Adelson as one of Gov. Deval Patrick's casino advocates, and the fact that Las Vegas Sands commissioned its own cost/benefit study on Massachusetts casino development (one that showed Patrick's economic projections to be on the rosy side, ironically), it's surprising that Sands does not show up as one of the heavy spenders.
Expect Round II of Patrick's big casino push to start kicking into gear after the election.
