America's biggest celebrity

Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign rolled out a unique tactic this week: complaining that McCain's opponent is more popular and famous. I suppose you could call it "out of the box" thinking, though it seems a tad whiny to me.

(McCain's ad about Hispanic-Americans shows a far nobler side and is notable for its sobriety and lack of flash. It also takes some cojones to run it, given the virulent anti-Latino sentiment that infects much of the GOP "base" (in multiple senses of the word), especially here in Nevada.

But the McCain people have it all wrong. America's heftiest celebrity is 44-pound stray cat Princess Chunk, the heaviest domestic pussycat in the world. This exemplar of avoirdupois is already scheduled to appear on Good Morning America and Live with Regis and Kelly. Surely the Today show is chomping at the bit to get in on the action. News of the giant feline has made headlines at least as far as Australia -- although I seriously doubt that an American cat-caregiver would say, "how do you lose a 20-kilo cat?" (Journalistic license, mayhap?)

Even Princess ( Captain) Chunk's gender is a source of confusion, so we may to settle on plain old "Chunk." Or "Powder," its given name. And, in a "ripped from the headlines" touch worth of Law & Order, it turns out that Chunk/Powder is just the latest victim of the nationwide foreclosure crisis. Powder's elderly owner found herself out on the street and turned the poor -- if portly -- kitty loose, which is why it was found lumbering about Voorhees, N.J., which sure is getting its 15 minutes of fame.

Anyway, it looks like the behemoth feline will soon find a new home -- and if he/she/it doesn't, maybe Mandalay Bay can give it a comfy domicile. Chunk/Powder might even outdraw that other big bruiser, the Komodo Dragon.

leo's Gravatar David you are so biased towarded the least experianced candidate for president. It is so obvious. In the three years he has been a Senator his commitee has
not held one meeting on Afganistan. He has not sponsered any major legislation. He has not reached across the aisle as McCain has. Remember McCain -Finegold?
Remember McCain co-sponsered with Ted Kennedy the Immogration reform bill! What legislation has Obama reached across the aisle? I think none.
Hillary was right! Do you want Obama to get the 3AM phone call? Most American's don't think so! McCain has proven leadership! Remember Obama knew all about his
pastor before Rev. Wright made headline! Another thing. Why does Obama call himself blacvk when he is more white then black? Why does he have
to check either white or black. He is mixed raced and there is nothing wrong with that! He is neither white or black. why does he say he will bring people
together when he has never reached across the aisle but has kept to his left wing policys. Why won't oBama say the Surge is working? He wouldn't have been
able to have gone to Iraq if it wasn't working? remember obama voted to cut off funding for our troops! Need i say more.

David McKee's Gravatar Sorry to disappoint you, Leo. I used to admire McCain a great deal and donated $75 (big bucks for me at the time of his 2000 presidential campaign) to his last campaign. American history would have turned out much better had he been the '00 nominee and not a certain Texan.

But that John McCain no longer seems to exist and his stances on gay-rights issues would relegate members of my own family to second-class citizenship. So, no, I cannot support him. But he's the best the Republicans had to offer this year and would be an improvement on what we have now. Can we agree to disagree?

Kevco55's Gravatar Again you view Repbulican/conservative perspective through your own unique "rose tinted spectacles. You confuse
and link our oppostion to illegal immigration in racial tones. It doesn't matter if an illegal alien is from Mexico, Guatemala,
Thailand, China or Ireland, if you are hear illegally then you should not be entitled to the same rights and priveledges
as natural born citizens, naturalized citizens or those on legal visas. Actually most conservatives feel a link with the
hispanic culture and share many conservative views including opposition to abortion and their love of "family".

David McKee's Gravatar Why is "family" in quotation marks, pray tell?
# Posted By David McKee | 8/4/08 11:03 AM
Bob Beers's Gravatar Because, I think, "family" is meant to be taken in thebroadly extended sense. As for illegal immigration and the obeying of the law, there are far more than simply two sides to this issue. Obviously someone here illegally is in violation of the law by definition. My concern is about all those "employers" who are paying these people well below minimum wage and chortling about it,
not to mention all the lawmakers winking at this violation while holding out their hands for their share of the graft.
