A source familiar with the situation at Excalibur's poker room informs me that the replacement of live dealers with PokerPro automated dealers will result in the loss of approximately 70 jobs, not 12.
"I don’t know if PokerPro will be a hit or not. No doubt it will generate more rake, but there are other costs that I doubt management has considered." One of the main duties of a poker dealer, the source points out, is "to maintain the integrity of the game. No, there’ll be no one there to do that. It will now be easier to break the rules and/or cheat at the Excalibur than online. Not to mention the loss of customer service that has been pervasive at the Excalibur (and elsewhere). Fewer maintenance crew, fewer cocktail waitresses, fewer slot attendants, and now dealer-less tables, that all contributes to a steady downhill slide.
"I realize management is under increasing pressure to cut costs ... But I can’t help but feel this is all shortsighted and ultimately costly."
Agreed, on both points.
