Those poor Las Vegas Sands spokespeople; they don't get paid enough, I'm sure, for the ridiculous things they're expected to say while keeping a straight face. At the very tail end of a breaking Sun story, one of them who (wisely) opted for anonymity, said the buyout of the 40/40 Club "gives us an opportunity to fill an identified need" for a sportsbook.
Gee, ya think? I mean, let's not get all rash here. This wacky, novel, out-of-the-box sports-betting craze just might not last, y'know. It's not like everybody's got one -- only MGM Grand, the Las Vegas Hilton, Eastside Cannery, Green Valley Ranch, New York-New York, the Tropicana, The Palms, the former Barbary Coast, a little joint called Caesars Palace, etc., etc.
Like I said, clearly a risky concept.
Seriously: It took them eight months to figure out that a toll booth masquerading as a sportsbook wasn't going to cut it? I refuse to believe that Sands execs are that dumb. I'm going to stick with Theory A: That they weren't convinced the 40/40 Club would work out and, if it didn't, they'd have a perfect sportsbook fall right into their lap. Which it has.
