Correction: The original post said "2009." I apologize for the error. Also, regarding "Train to Nowhere," the Las Vegas Monorail sells "locals" fares for $1 each (less than the CAT bus). Unfortunately, this has not produced the desired upturn in ridership.
The last several years I used 2 for 1 monorail coupons I got from www.vegasresource.com to buy 10 ride passes. At $35 each, by getting 2 the cost to ride was only $1.75. I was in Vegas twice a year for trade shows so we'd just carry them over from show to show. I was in Vegas this last week and we I went to buy some more I found that they don't sell them anymore. I had to buy two 3 day passes, but not at the current price of $28, but at the old price of $40 to get the 2 for 1.
Not sure if you can pick up the $1 rides at the station but prior to the stations having manned ticketing booths, you had to go to one of the transport hubs (downtown or south strip locations) and get a 20 ride pass for $20 after showing your local ID.
Bob, I double-checked with my Monorail expert and she says that you still have to go to the DTC -- way, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off the Monorail route -- to get those "locals" passes. As Max Rubin would ask, "Crazy or stupid?"
