Although the Las Vegas Review-Journal's notion of free speech is sometimes tantamount to yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theater, it showed welcome restraint in today's online edition. The paper's editors showed the eminent good sense to disable the "Comments" function on a story with inflammatory content. Considering that the R-J's reader-comment threads often turn into a free-fire zone of racially charged invective, up to and sometimes including the advocacy of genocide, the paper's decision to head off a verbal race riot before it could occur is laudable in the extreme.
It's been eight years since I saw Kallen Esperian give a superb rendition of Desdemona in Verdi's Otello at Carnegie Hall, the best performance I'd heard from her. In the years since, she's not enjoyed the prominence that such fine singing would seem to warrant, and I've no idea how she sounds these days. Still, there are far worse gambles in town than plunking down $25-$40 to find out, when she joins Cynthia Lawrence to headline two Puccini galas this weekend.
Just look at the comments about the article on the new table game "21 to the River" if you think David is making it up.
Since the R-J's crackerjack search engine can't pull up the phrase "21 to the River," the comment Jeff is alluding to is as follows: "Just one thing, 21 to the river is this what he did to get to USA have 21 illegals and crossed the river." The "he" in question is auto mechanic and game inventor Anthony Ramirez.
