They work hard for the money

Those nice Osmond kids.

Tired of haunting the stacks at Best Buy, searching in vain for a "collector's edition" DVD of Goin' Coconuts? Then get on down to the Flamingo and check out Donny & Marie. No, seriously.

How is it? In four words: All killer, no filler. The two most famous Osmond siblings deliver a kick-ass show that had a showroom full of Baby Boomers mostly besotted for 100 minutes or so. With the exception of a few video-montage bridges, one Osmond or another is onstage 95% of the time. The format has Marie doing one long set, culminating in "Pie Jesu" from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requiem (kitsch, yes, but from the top shelf). Then, of course, there's a Donny set that kicks off with a Stevie Wonder tribute, followed by a third "act" of vocal and terpsichorean sibling rivalry.

Not all of the musical material is good -- some is quite forgettable -- but D&M sure know how to sell it. They're both a few years my senior but I could never muster even a small fraction of the duo's energy. They romp through a gamut of musical genres, backed by a tight band and an equally sharp dance corps. (In terms of choreography, staging, set and lighting, I would actually rate this above the much-pricier Jersey Boys at Palazzo.)

In short, they're troupers, professional to the core. They couldn't be farther from treating this Vegas engagement as a comfy trip to a big payday. Co-presenter Danny Gans, notorious for phoning it in, could learn a thing or two about "work ethic" from watching this show.

There are the expected jokes: Mormons, Dancing with the Stars, Marie's teeth, Marie's wigs, Marie's diet ... you get the idea. But D&M don't try to be ironic, nor get stuck on themselves. Their revue feels like a throwback to the days when TV still carried variety shows, and I'm certain that was the intent. It's dead-on sincere and just self-referential enough.

Those, like me, who were only intermittently aware of Osmondmania won't feel left out of the fun. In its mix of song, dance, banter and generous audience interaction, Donny & Marie pays homage to the classic notion of a "Vegas show" ... without the tired-blood connotations that sometimes accompany that evocation.

Something for the tired businessman.

A big part of the enjoyment is provided by the audience itself, whose reactions on media night (brandishing old 45s and Marie dolls on high) were somewhere between a tent revival and a Tom Jones concert. No panties were flung onstage but female pheromenes were definitely "going to 11" last night. Not to worry, guys: Marie looks terrific and she definitely shakes it. A lot. She may be "a little bit country," but she also turns out to be a natural for the songs of Kander & Ebb ("All That Jazz," "Cabaret.")

Had I sprung for main-floor seating, I definitely felt I'd gotten my money's worth. In scale of show, D&M are somewhere between Wayne Brady and Bette Midler's The Showgirl Must Go On, and as worth-seeing as either. This is a real shot in the arm for Strip entertainment, and I reiterate my prediction that Harrah's Entertainment has a money-spinner on its hands. Flamingo President Don Marrandino made an excellent call here. Would I pay to see it agan? Most definitely.

mike_ch's Gravatar I... I.... I guess.

I just can't see those wealthy 28 year olds MGM targets their largest hotels to, the people who flock to the latest chrome-covered ultralounge, being interested in the Osmonds.

Then again, I know few people over 30, and Harrah's marketing and image and PR has rarely ever "spoke" to me. This may be why I avoid a lot of their properties (love Paris, but have been there much less since PPE was purchased.)

David McKee's Gravatar Richard Abowitz of the Los Angeles Times, whose take (http://vegasblog.latimes.com/vegas/2008/09/donny-m...) is considerably less enthusiastic than mine, reports: "The only real surprise is how very successful this all is turning out to be during one of the worst economic periods the Strip has ever seen. I hear pre-sale has been amazingly strong."

Throw in the rumored advent of "The Lion King" at Mandalay Bay and you'd have a significant swing of the pendulum back toward "family friendly Vegas." Any port in a storm, I guess.
