They love owning it ... but wouldn't be caught dead there.
So Goldman Sachs has pulled the chicken switch on a planned Vegas hootenanny, worrisome over bad publicity and frugality. Which is, like, totally ironic 'n shit, seeing as how Goldman Sachs owns three frigging casinos in Las Vegas (both Arizona Charlie's and the Stratosphere) and a substantial percentage of a fourth (Las Vegas Hilton). It also means that we need to say a nightly prayer for Goldman Sachs' continued financial health. But (more) seriously ...
The other kicker in the story is that Goldman Sachs wasn't going to hold its meet-down at one of its own casinos but at Mandalay Bay. I applaud their taste (MGM Mirage should keep the Bay but ditch MGM Grand, not the other way around) but deplore the implicit diss of Goldman-owned properties. What? The LVH is good enough to own but not a place where they want to be seen? And think of the "after hours" events one could hold in the Stratosphere "pod." Besides, if you want to save money, where better to hold a big event than a hotel-casino that actually belongs to you?
Way to put that mixed message out there, Goldman Sachs!
BTW, I had the exact opposite experience on a recent weekend -- MGM was dead (except for the Sigma Derby table) and MBay was hopping. It's amazing how radically different one's impression can be depending on whatever random night one happens to drop by.
One other point, I did wind up cancelling my NYNY stay, as MGM sent me a better offer, but when calling MGM to book it, while they could see my NYNY offer, I had to first call NYNY first and then call back MGM to book. Definitely not Harrah's esque from a functionality standpoint, but I do like that they've tried to keep their properties competing.
