Faithful reader (and frequent victim of our Comment-Eating LVA Server) Jeff in OKC writes, re Sen. Tom Coburn and his sudden interest in Las Vegas:
Dr. Tom Coburn, MD, whose rigid adherence to conservative, self-righteous Southern Baptist ideology embarrasses many Oklahomans on a regular basis, is either loved or hated here in Oklahoma, and is a laughingstock about everywhere else. Personally, I can't stand him, and think he's bad for Oklahoma.
His anti-gambling stance linked to in your post, was the prevailing opinion here in Oklahoma in 2000, when he made those statements. It is still common within the Southern Baptist and other conservative Churches here. Thankfully, we are very hypocritical here in Oklahoma, and we have adapted to Casino gaming quite well. I think we have the highest number Casinos in the USA, outside of Nevada, and they have got to be one of the biggest advertisers in the state.
Shortly after Election Day, I cautioned that the anti-gambling flank of the GOP coalition (Coburn, Vitter, Jindal, Palin) would be ascendant and this appears to be coming to pass. By contrast, casino-friendly Gov. Charlie Crist (R-FL) is a pariah within his own state party, despite being very popular within the electorate at large.
