It's not federal bailout money but it may be something even better: common-sense reform of New Jersey casino rules. Certain of the goodies include:
• Competitive bidding on out-of-state horse-racing simulcast feeds. It's ridiculous how Atlantic City casinos are required to prop up New Jersey's failing horse tracks. If the sport of kings can't cut it in the age of Joe the Plumber, it shouldn't be made some other industry's burden.
• Toking poker dealers out of the "rake" on tournament games.
• Allowing smaller non-gaming vendors to do business with casinos without having to get a special license and registration from the state.
• Reclassifying computers in surveillance rooms at non-gaming equipment. Talk about a no-brainer!
• Permitting comped transportation to be included as a promotional allowance. Another no-brainer.
There's more, but you get the general drift. It won't pull, say, Resorts Atlantic City out of the ditch, but if these new rules are enacted it will undoubtedly provide some incremental relief to everbody's bottom line.
