Those of you who live outside of Nevada and read about the continuing adventures of Gov. Jim Gibbons and wonder if he is really as strange as he comes across in print, wonder no more. Here is Midnight Jim raw and unedited (if not unscripted). Elsewhere, Steve Friess explains why this isn't the "podcast" that the governor's office claims it is.
Give Gibbons credit: He's drawn his line in the sand and is unlikely to ever back down, no matter what. And he's certainly right when he complains -- if with a certain lack of dignity -- that his opponents, Republican and Democratic alike, have responded with little more than unceasing fecklessness. Chances are that a combination of federal stimulus money, a state lottery and maybe, possibly some temporary tax hikes will be used to paper Nevada's budget shortfall over for now. Then the whole mess will be punted two years down the road, on the presumption that we'll be back to prosperity by then and the casinos (and tourists, natch) can continue to pick up the tab.
