No date certain has been set for Tropicana Atlantic City dealers to hit the bricks but their patience has run out. This sorry state of affairs has been brought to pass by New Jersey Casino Control Commission-appointed trustee Gary Stein. Under the once-admirable principle of not wanting to lock new ownership into a union contract negotiated by receivers, Stein has justified punting this football further and further down the field.
Stein's position has been rendered untenable by his own feckless tenure, as he frittered away several pricey bids for the Trop last spring and now looks like he's let a downsized Cordish Co. offer slip through his butterfingers, too. This guy couldn't sell lemonade in Death Valley on the hottest day in August ... and to think that, if he got his way, the 15-month sale process would be further extended into May!
Blame also accrues to Stein's handpicked interim Trop administration, headed by Pam Popielarski, which has decided to charge dealers more money for fewer benefits. Belt-tightening may be the order of the day on the Boardwalk but to do this in the teeth of a contract negotiation is tantamount to an outright provocation.
This latest incident removes any doubt that the NJCCC should either put Tropicana Entertainment CEO Scott Butera behind the wheel (with the NJCCC acting as faculty monitor, if need be) or broker a deal with lead creditor Carl Icahn to appoint TropEnt as casino manager if Icahn prevails at the bankruptcy auction. When a strike looked inevitable at the Tropicana Las Vegas, Butera was quick to make peace. Let's hope he can do the same in Atlantic City.
Lobster heist. Down the street at Bally's Atlantic City, security nabbed a crustaceon thief, in an incident straight out of Paul Blart, Mall Cop.
