Our senior U.S. Representative had some fightin' words for Las Vegas' political detractors. Unfortunately, she pulled what could have been her knockout punch. She kinda, sorta -- but ultimately doesn't -- say what needs saying, which is that "Las Vegas" is code language to stir up the churchy set, the "values voters" (regardless of party affiliation). It's like Dr. Pavlov's bell to that crowd. Rep. Berkley feints at this but doesn't follow through.
McCain drain: I'll leave aside the august senator's quips about "sustainable Las Vegas." (Two words, senator: Lake Mead.) But I do take issue with his jab at Nevada Humanities for creating an online encyclopedia of the Silver State. I mean, there's Wikipedia, right? (Which is famous for its reliability ... not.)
One of the central features of LVA is our online "Question of the Day," which would benefit greatly from resources like Nevada Humanities's 'Nevadapedia,' as it were. We're reliant upon the generosity of a network of amateur historians, with ever-helpful pros like Michael Green and Dennis McBride adding to the mix. So, hell yeah, this is an earmark I'm proud to have my tax dollars support.
Another Black Book inductee. Tampering with a Rite Aid slot machine will probably be enough to land this guy in Nevada's unofficial Hall of Infamy. There's a casino CEO out there whose company was found to have cheated its patrons -- and he still has his license. The smaller the miscreant, the more severe is the frontier justice that the Nevada Gaming Control Board metes out.
