Entertainment,The Strip
Part of last night was spent at the opening of Dixie's Dam Bar (no "Country," just dammed), newest augmentation of the Hooters hotel-casino, just off the Strip. You can check your ears at the door because the over-pumped sound system -- it's like being inside a subwoofer -- renders them unnessary.
Dixie's had been described to me, in essence, as a poor man's Coyote Ugly. A homeless person's Coyote Ugly would be more like it. I've been in basements that were nicer. It's a sparse, meanly furnished room with mediocre booze, plus the usual chicken wings-and-vegetables fare. (There were also some greasy, soggy shrimp you'll want to avoid if you hope to stay on speaking terms with your stomach.) It's as though Dixie's had a budget of $1.95 and finished with a few cents to spare.
A dispirited crowd and beyond-lame emcee banter added to the get-me-the-hell-outta-here vibe. We fled to the pool area, though its intended tranquility was diminished by a incessant, high-pitched mechanical whine of indeterminate origin. It wasn't the only aspect of Hooters that manifested managerial indifference. Both the men's room and the parking garage elevator were in an advanced state of dilapidation.
Hooter is like a second-tier regional or locals casino that look a wrong turn and found itself just off the Strip. Its upsides include an unintimidating, even cozy scale and a property that's easy to navigate. The casino floor is clean and brightly lit ... although the two ornate chandeliers over the table game pit look very out of place amid all the rec room-paneling and splashes of bright orange -- the Hooterian "aesthetic," if you like.
For some reason, the Rapid Roulette game was out of action on a Friday night. Hooters also boasts what is probably the puniest poker room in all of Vegas ("poker alcove" might be closer to the the truth): two tables in an area the size of one's bedroom. If there's a poker room around here that's even smaller, please let me know. Because that'd be something to see.
