Not to belittle acts of violence that occur in or near casinos, but we don't make a practice of reporting them in LVA. That's partly because people seem to need little excuse to kill one another and would just as soon bust a cap in your ass at Camp Snoopy as in a casino.

However, a deadly early-morning stabbing on the grounds of the Tropicana Las Vegas may warrant closer scrutiny, due to that hotel-casino's recent history. During a contretemps with then-owner Columbia Sussex, the Culinary Union drew attention to an influx of unsavory characters during the pre-dawn hours. (An extensive printed report accompanied and considerably enlarged upon the video evidence.)

At the time, the Nevada Gaming Control Board was probing allegations of security understaffing. With interim owner Tropicana Entertainment still trimming expenses and new manager Onex Corp. not yet in place, has the ball been dropped again? Perhaps the NGCB should take another look, just to be safe.

This is not surprising at all-- there were REALLY conspicuous hookers there when I stayed last summer. A shame what corporate mismanagement has done to a classic place with a lot of potential.

if there are picketers for any union at the trop site, could be that these are "outsourced". i've noticed at various retail businesses as walmart that the sign carrying picketers are obviously rescue mission turn outs, bums, winos. their unsavory, unkempt appearance only diminishes the worth of the union's demands. likely the unions involved intentionally employ low cost, filthy vagrants to discourage customers from entering the premises. that was the method used by the outfit "back east" when a new tavern owner didn't sign up only with connected vendors. first outfit move was to hire filthy bums to loiter, even barf at the bar's entrance. the next levels of harassment were cooler.

perhaps metro should check such "union" picketers if present, for outstanding warrants and rap sheets too thick for a staple.

There were never any picketers at the Trop because the need for a strike was averted, thanks to the diplomacy of Tropicana Entertainment CEO Scott Butera, who quickly defused what was becoming a very testy situation.

I covered a Culinary Union protest at the Venetian once and found all the picketers that I encountered to be upstanding individuals, BTW, and their hygiene -- even on a hot summer afternoon -- was beyond reproach.
