Even the local TV stations' news coverage this morning amounted to "MichaelJacksonMichaelJacksonMichaelJacksonMichaelJackson ... and now today's weather, followed by more breaking news about MichaelJacksonMichaelJacksonMichaelJackson."
Pretty good for a guy who never played the Strip. It's way over the top, even compared to the Danny Gans-a-thon. That, in turn, would have obliterated the passing of Sam Butera, were it not mainly for the efforts of Mike Weatherford in the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Butera, former sidekick of Louis Prima and Keely Smith, was no mean bandleader in his own right and inarguably a figure of far greater musical significance to Vegas than even the King of Pop. Here he is leading a hot combo in his signature tune:
And that, ladies and gentleman, is Classic Vegas.
Here in Southern CA, our local TV news consisted of 80% MJ/10% other/10% commercials, & promos for MJ "specials". We didn't even see start-to-stop car chases!
Last night's ABC 'Nightline' was more of the same, and NBC's network news tonight gave us lots more coverage. As I write this, 'Dateline NBC', which was scheduled to cover Farrah Fawcett, is 'doing' MJ instead. 'Nightline' will probably give us more MJ "news" tonight.
I had no idea he was so important in the history of the world. (No, I wasn't watching all this coverage; I was doing stuff online - like checking REAL news - while the MJ coverage ran on TV. I did notice, however, during the coverage of the LA Coroners office news conference, that some reporters seemed astounded that toxicology test results would not be completed for WEEKS. Methinks they have been watching too much CSI...)
