Journalists are working gambling metaphors overtime as they chronicle Vladimir Putin's casino crackdown. Although my previous CNN link dead-ended (pun unintended) are yet more Michael Jackson necroph ... er, coverage, that proved a blessing in disguise. The best and most comprehensive short-form report on the situation in Russia comes from ...
... Al-Jazeera, believe it or not. If you've got a half-hour to spare, Russia Today goes in-depth on the situation. (Ian Sutton has been aggregating links with remarkable thoroughness over GamingFloor.com, if you want even more coverage of Boss Putin's power play.)
For an insight into the paternalistic mentality that led to the Putin Putsch, you can't do better than this:
Not that Americans can afford the luxury of smugness. Consider this Philadelphia TV station's condescending report on Atlantic City, with its snide, disparaging, cliché-ridden attitude toward both gambling and the players themselves:
Aljazeera, I wouldn't know. They invested a lot and I've heard it referred to as "a mirror universe BBC World News" but I honestly can't say I watch it since I enjoy being able to fly, thanks. Whether or not you or I believe it's enemy propaganda is irrelevant since Homeland Security seems to feel it is and that's what really matters.
As for the FOX report, all I picked up out of that was complaining about how deals aren't as good as they used to be. Also, "they don't want families unless the parents gamble" but that's pretty much been the Slightly Less Than Official line here for years now.
