Your potential Republican gubernatorial candidates are pikers when compared to our California ones:

We are still facing a $20 billion deficit; our roads are breaking down; our social services network is suffering huge holes; our local governments & school districts are going broke; we are saddled with a useless legislature at war with itself; the "California Dream" is gone.
So what do the potential candidates do, in order to "get tight" with the Republican primary voters?
They rush to go on air with "conservative" talk radio hosts, professing that the fix for all our problems is a program:
- No new taxes, fees, up-charges, surcharges, etc.
- Lower all the above.
- Cut business taxes.
- Pass new tax rebates for businesses to stimulate "trickle down" prosperity.
- Proudly sign a NO NEW TAXES pledge, to be hung in the radio studios, with a copy sent to the offices of the California Republican Party headquarters.
- Oppose anything even tangentially related to the evil word ABORTION.
- Hate Obama.

Over here, in Republican primaries, we'll shoot the rider, then cut off the legs of the horse he rode in on!

Jeff,
Too many Democrats in the CA legislature do the opposite:
- Cave in to their base, and pass spending programs in good times that the state can't support when the economy goes south - without the underlying funding base (which the Republican minority refuses to pass).

You see, we have a silly voter-passed constitutional amendment that says all "taxes" & all budgets have to be passed with a 2/3 vote of the legislature. This means that our legislature is practically useless because the gNOpers say that, when times are good, we need to cut/rebate taxes for business in order to keep the good times rollin'; conversely, when times are bad, we need to stop spending on "wasteful" social services - and "prime the pump" by giving tax breaks & rebates to business otherwise, they won't contribute the one or two or three votes necessary to pass ANY budget.

One voter-passed (potential) improvement to the situation that will take effect next year: the state legislature won't be drawing its own voting districts: a nonpartisan board will. We hope that this will cut down on the number of "rabid" Democratic & "rabid" Republican primary candidates, and allow moderate candidates to face each other in general elections - who might be more inclined to work together for the good of all the residents of the state.
