BIG Mistake

The statue of the Queen of KuPon has fallen to the ground and crumbled into dust.

Actually I had lost this crown some years ago, as I no longer had the energy to chase coupons all over town. But I do try to keep up with the best coupons these days. However, if I miss a matchplay or don’t feel like going out of my way, even for a $25 one, Brad just says that one of the perks of getting old and financially secure is being able to not do what we don’t want to do.

But this sad story is about my mind slipping a cog: We had received a valuable Silverton coupon book in the mail. I looked over the coupons and pulled out the ones I thought we might use. Brad didn’t look over the booklet – he depends on me telling him when and where he is to use a coupon. So one day last month, I wasn’t feeling well so I sent him to Silverton to play alone, giving him several coupons I thought he might use – hitting natural quads or a taxable, and even the one for $200 if he got lucky and hit a royal.

I did not send with him the coupon for a sequential royal. I didn’t tell him to wear rubber clogs either, in case he got hit by lightning in the Silverton parking lot.

Well, you know what happened.  He didn't get hit by lightning in the parking lot, but in the casino, hitting a sequential royal. He didn’t even know about that special coupon – he just handed over his $200 coupon for a royal and was happy for the bonus. Someone came along and saw the sequential and ask him if he had that $4000 coupon. Poor Brad – he didn’t even know about that coupon. He called me up and gave me the sad news. I could have driven quickly to Silverton and brought him the coupon, but he had already given them the $200 coupon and the powers-that-be said it would be too late. They were enforcing the rules very vigorously.

At first I was really bummed out about my mistake – why didn’t I send him with the whole book? Well, he hates to fill his pockets with heavy stuff and this coupon book was thick. But I really couldn’t think of any excuse that would make me feel better.

Brad wasn’t as bummed out as I was. He reminded me that at the higher levels we play now, we could (and have done so) lose $4000 in an hour or less on high-denom machines. And then he reminded me that we have had a lot more good luck in our gambling life than bad luck.

Yes, that is true. Just a few weeks before we had found a good play on a $1 Fifty Play Deuces machine. Although we don’t usually play $250 a hand, we decided to take a short-term shot on it. And Brad was dealt 4 deuces for a nice 50k.

I think I will give Brad a crown for being the King of Jackpots!

katy's Gravatar Jean, I'm 70 and tremendously enjoy your posts. I'm not sure how old you are, but close to mine, I think. I'm sure that overlooking the coupon is troubling you, as it would me. Because I've had the same thing happen to me!! Maybe not that dollar amount, though (I play quarters). The Silverton coupons are a good deal. I plan to play on Mondays until the offer runs out. Playing the BJ coupons, too, are a great deal. I hope that you are playing those. Katy

Terri's Gravatar Congratulations to Brad! Seems like he has a nice streak of wins this year. Love to read all your stories!!

Philip K.'s Gravatar Awww. Big time bummer. A simple thing as a coupon cost four grand.

The hardest part for me isn't losing money. If i'm playing correctly, then that's that. I get more mad at myself when I'm winning money and making mistakes that are costing me in the long run.

Eva M.'s Gravatar Congratulations, Brad! Well, the coupon loss is lamentable but at your level of play I'm sure you got over it in a day. The fun part is that you got dealt sequential royals!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean how often does THAT happen. I think luck is not just an occasional visitor in your life, Brad, it seems to be a lifelong companion. Jean, you are so incredibly organized that you are certainly allowed an occasional oops. Look forward to reading about your next huge win.

Theresa Clift's Gravatar I get mad when I go to the grocery and forget a really good coupon and find out the item is on sale. Oh I feel your pain well a tiny tiny tiny fraction of your pain.

ProgressiveGambler's Gravatar $250 per hand? Really? How can you still pass yourself off as a "Frugal" gambler? Seems like you've got more money than you know what to do with; obviously you're free to spend it how you want, but to maintain this "Frugal Gambler" persona and sweat a $400 coupon when the rest of us "Frugal" gamblers are hustling $5 match plays and praying for a profit? Please.

Jean Scott's Gravatar Remember, "frugal" does not mean cheap or low cost, but getting good value for your money. This $250 a hand play had a very high EV and since we have the bankroll, it was a good value for us. Being frugal - playing only when we had a good advantage - when we were playing quarters 20 years ago - has given us the growing bankroll that we can now play much higher.

And by the way, it was a FOUR THOUSAND DOLLAR coupon, not $400.

WTF's Gravatar I agree with ProgressiveGambler, I can't feel sorry for someone playing $250 a hand while I'm saving up my money to play nickels and quarters. In this economy wanting sympathy when you drop $4,000 without blinking when most of us save all year just to take the trip out is sickening.

Amerikanisch's Gravatar I think I detect the "Green-Eyed Monster".

I am happy for Jean and Brad. Apparently they are greatly blessed and they are willing ti
they are willing to share their knowledge.
Do you know when I had my best luck?
I was in Atlantic City and the woman next to me hit a royal flush.
I shook her hand and sincerely congratulated her.
Well, that luck must have rubbed off because I hit two royals on within 20 minutes on the same machine.
If you SINCERELY wish others well and you will be rewarded with goodd karma
