If offered one or the other, which would be the best option? Assuming the payout was the same, are there any advantages to one or the other?

No real advantage in most cases. Luck is the determining factor in slots for sure and VP much of the time. However, there are some VP tournaments where some skill can be used. You would need to know the rules before making this determination.
