Wildly popular around the world, Blue Man Group defies a two-line description. A musical feast? Yes. A roller coaster of comedy? Absolutely. A stunning mix of technology and raw imagination? You bet. Nobody describes it the same, but everyone agrees -- it's a must-see.

(This show was reviewed in the April 2000 LVA, when this show was performing at Luxor. Since this review was written, Blue Man Group has moved to the Venetian with a new show we haven't yet reviewed.)
Blue Man Group, the just-opened show at Luxor, has been hyped to the point of becoming one of the biggest entertainment events to storm Las Vegas in years. It certainly is different, an altogether bizarre scene. Three men dressed in dark body suits with blue faces pound out primal beats on kettle drums and PVC pipe, splatter paint, and otherwise cavort semi-maniacally amidst some of the most stunning technology-enhanced staging ever to hit a Las Vegas showroom. That's a lot to pack into a performance, but it's apparently not enough for the mime-ish Blue Men, who strive for more by throwing a heavy dose of silent comedy into the mix.
Most of the audience seemed to enjoy the "blue humor," but we found the bits somewhat sophomoric. Worse, they're interruptive, slowing the pace excessively at times. Of course, excess is what this show is about and when it's moving, it really moves. The final third of the show builds to one of the most memorable finales you'll ever experience: a literal papering of the theater. Huge rollers positioned in the back dispense strands of papier mache, which are handed off, head over head, through the audience until they make it down to the front of the showroom. Wow!
Our recommendation? It depends. If staying on the cutting edge of what's hot is important to you, you'll have to see Blue Man Group. The media has fawned all over this show and Luxor is, at least for the time being, the home of the town's new in-vogue event. If you're more into meat-and-potatoes entertainment, be prepared to be tolerant or it may be you who walks out blue.
