Video Poker Glossary

Video poker abbreviations can certainly be bewildering. If you're a total video poker newbie but keen to learn, the best place to start is with the video poker chapter of Jean Scott's The Frugal Gambler, where she explains all about paytables, optimal strategy, positive and negative expectation, full- and short-pay video poker, and more.

For now, here are some of the more common abbreviations you may come across and what they mean:

9/6 JoB stands for a variation of Jacks or Better that pays nine coins for a full house and six coins for a flush, while 10/7 DB refers to a Double Bonus game that pays 10 and seven coins, respectively, for a full house and flush. FPDW refers to full-pay Deuces Wild, and NSUD means Not So Ugly Ducks (Ducks is a nickname for Deuces). Here is a key to the abbreviations used on the Best Video Poker page:

     A+8 -- Aces and Eights
     BP -- Bonus Poker
     DB -- Double Bonus
     DDB -- Double Double Bonus
     DDW -- Double Deuces Wild
     FPDW -- Full-Pay Deuces Wild
     JoB -- Jacks or Better
     JW -- Joker Wild
     JW2 -- 2 Pair Joker Wild
     LDW -- Loose Deuces Wild
NSUD -- Not So Ugly Ducks (Deuces)
     PKM -- Pick 'em
     SA -- Super Aces

What these terms (other than TITO) and others like them do is identify the pay schedules on video poker machines. Other abbreviations, such as RF3 (three cards to the royal flush), SF (straight flush), and ST4 (four cards to the straight), need to be deciphered to understand video poker strategy cards.

More information about these abbreviations and many other video poker words and phrases can be found in the extensive video poker glossary available from vpFREE: http://members.cox.net/vpfree/Gloss.htm
