This rustic getaway at the head of Kyle Canyon, roughly 40 miles from the city at 7,700 feet in elevation (5,000 feet higher and 20-30 degrees cooler than Vegas), offers 25 cabins in a range of sizes, all with a balcony, jetted tub, DVD player (free on-site library), gas fire, mini-fridge, and microwave; larger studios include a kitchenette. Most cabins are pet-friendly (a menu is available for Fido on the Doggie Deck), and sleeper sofas accommodate extra guests. Home to the only restaurant on Mt. Charleston, with its focal open fire, The Lodge features romantic dining with views of the surrounding mountains. There is no gaming. The Cathedral Rock picnic area, with its BBQs, fire pits, and hiking trail, is directly across the road, and hiking trails and bushwhacking opportunities abound on the 11,916-foot Mt. Charleston, Nevada's eighth-highest peak. Note: There are no phones and no wifi/cable reception.
