Internet Gambling Prohibition Passed:

A bill to curtail online gambling passed both Houses of Congress. Senator Frist, the Majority Leader, included the verbiage in a sure-to-pass Port Security Bill. President Bush's signature is considered certain. There is a lot of confusion as to what effect this bill will have. We're confused as well. It appears to ban bank transfers and credit cards to online gambling sites. It also requires U.S. banks to monitor the transactions. There are comments on online forums saying that the bill will have a 270 day period where banks will have to implement the new law. We're not sure if it'll affect sites such as NeTeller, Citadel, and Firepay that are intermediary payment processing companies. As we get more specifics on the scope and implementation, we'll report them here.

Bottoms Up Back:

One of Las Vegas' most long-running shows returns tonight when Bottom's Up opens at Fitzgerald's. Known for being the only topless daytime revue in town for many years, in various venues, after tonight's opening, the version at the Fitz will continue to be performed at 7 pm, Monday through Thursday, in the showroom.

Good News for Mac Users:

If you're fed up with the majority of on-line poker software being for PCs only, there's good news from PartyPoker.com, which today announced that its downloadable MacOSX native client is now available in its first real money version, featuring single table games, with tournament capability soon to follow. Other sites already offering Mac native software include FullTiltPoker.com, PokerPages.com, and PokerRoom.com. (We checked with ParadisePoker, BoDog, EmpirePoker, PokerStars, and UltimateBet, all of whom confirmed they still have no plans for Mac versions.)

Vegas This Weekend:

Pahrump Fall Festival:

A concert by Tracy Bird kicks off the annual Pahrump Fall Festival today, which runs through October 1. As many as 50,000 are expected to attend the event, which includes profressional rodeo, a carnival, a parade, arts and crafts, plus a host of vendors and exhibits. Tickets for tonight's concert start at $15 and can be purchased from various outlets including the Chamber of Commerce, Ace Hardware, Shadow Mountain Feed, and Pahrump Winery. Carnival tickets are $25 on the door.

Vivica Fox in Jubilee!:

Tonight, for one night only, actress and "Dancing with the Stars" frontrunner Vivica A. Fox will make a special guest appearance in the finale of the 7:30 pm performance of Jubilee! at Bally's, in honor of the show's 25th anniversary this year. Fright Dome's Recruiting:

New Vegas Water Park?:

Plans have been announced for a new Las Vegas water park, currently called "Las Vegas Wet," which would fill the gap in the market left by the much mourned Wet 'n Wild theme park. Slated for 100 acres of land near Las Vegas Blvd. and the 215, the park itself will occupy over 30 acres, part indoors and part outdoors, with additional plans for the site including a snow dome for indoor skiing, two hotels, a casino, and events center. If the project comes together, its backers hope to break ground early next year.

Ethel's Chocolate Lounge Opens:

Today is the grand opening of local chocolatier Ethel M's "Chocolate Lounge" in the Fashion Show mall. Described by parent company Mars Retail Group's president John Haugh as a "chocolate womb," the lounge is chocolate-colored and features chocolate cookbooks, chocolate posters, chocolate fondue, hot cocoa drinks and, of course, chocolates.

GVR to Unveil Latest Expansion:

The latest expansion of Green Valley Ranch is to be unveiled October 3, to coincide with the resort's 5th anniversary. Costing $110 million, the latest additions include a new 1,200-space parking garage, 170-seat race and sports book, and 22 table poker room.

Fall Arrives at Bellagio:

Summer's officially over, at least at Bellagio, which has just unveiled the new fall display in its conservatory and botanical gardens. The seasonal tableau features colorful gourds, pumpkins, and squash, plus a 35-foot-tall working cider mill, and a living painting made of 160,000 plants and flowers.

Free Freakin' Beer Tonight:

Feel like venting some aggression? The Freakin' Frog (4700 S. Maryland Pkwy.) is hosting an "Another Freakin' Wall Must Come Down" party from 11 pm tonight, inviting patrons to take slegehammer swings at the dividing wall as they extend into the property next door. There will be six kegs of free beer and a band, with commemorative T-shirts available to mark the occasion. You're recommended to get there by 11 pm and the sledgehammers (provided) start swinging at 11:59 pm and continue until the wall is down. Expect a big crowd and standing room only.

Greek Casino Robbed:

A gang of robbers armed with machine guns and sledgehammers stole an estimated $1.9 million from a casino outside Athens yesterday, by ramming a security van with a stolen truck and smashing its bulletproof windshield. Police say they then made their getaway in a car, also thought to be stolen.

New Show for Sahara:

Redneck Comedy Live!, a new family-friendly show at the Sahara that showcases four comedic performers, opens October 9. The comedians featured include Dick Hardwick (a favorite of Riba McIntire), Nashville comic/recording artist T. Bubba Bechtol, Sam Griesbaum, and Killer Beaz. The show will perform nightly (except Sundays) at 9 pm in the Sahara Theater; tickets are $44.50 inclusive of tax.

Second Chance for Crazy Horse Too?:

The famous Las Vegas gentlemen's club, which had its license revoked earlier this month after owner Rick Rizzolo pleaded guilty to several felonies, may get a new lease of life. Local restaurant owner Michael Signorelli, who operates the Golden Steer Steakhouse, has apparently applied for a new permit to serve alchol at the club. If his application is granted, the license would be good for six months.

Free Bloody Marys Today:

Atlantic City Sands Closing:

The Sands is not taking reservations beyond Nov. 10. New owner Pinnacle Entertainment plans to raze the casino in January and replace it with a new $1.5 billion resort.

Greek Food Festival Begins:

Following hot on the heals of the San Gennara Italian food frenzy and the gastronomic delights of the Mexican Independence Day festivities, comes the much-anticipated Greek Food Festival, which runs from 5 pm today through September 24. Mouth-watering offerings include lots of different types of lamb dishes, gyros, loukaniko calamari, tiropites, dolmathes, Greek salad, and an array of Greek pastries. The festival also features live music and dancing, plus vendors selling gifts, art, clothing, and jewelry, and special entertainment for children. The festival takes place in the grounds of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church at 5300 S. El Camino Rd, at the corner of Hacienda between Jones and Torry Pines. "Nashville Star" Auditions Today:

From 10 am-7 pm today, there's an open casting call for the "Nashville Star" reality show at Sunset Station's Club Madrid. If you'd like a shot at being the next great country music star, you must register before 2 pm, with auditions taking place from 2-7 pm. The list of approved songs (which must be performed a capella or with an acoustic instrucment) is long and includes "Doin' Something Right" by Billy Currington, "Redneck Yacht Club" by Craig Morgan, Tim McGraw's "Something Like That", "Lucky One" by Faith Hill, Dixie Chicks' "Sin Wagon", and "Break Down Here" by Julie Roberts. New Terrible's Tower Open:

The new hotel tower at Terrible's casino, which features jacuzzi suites and 42" plasma TVs in every room, plus the new 500 car parking garage with direct access to the casino, is now open.

Casino Has It All - Except Gambling:

Michigan's new $36-million Indian casino has everything you'd expect from a casino - lounge, restaurants, indoor pool overlooking Lake Huron etc. There's just one element missing: gambling. Turns out someone screwed up and the joint was built on land where gambling's illegal. While the tribe's current and former chairmen argue over whose fault it was, all bets remain off at the Chippewa Tribe's 800 slot machines and 26 gaming tables.

"CSI" Premiere - Sneak Preview:

Want to catch a sneaky glimpse of the new "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" season premiere, which airs at 9 pm tomorrow night on CBS? You can, courtesy of Cirque du Soleil. Turns out the episode opens in the KÀ theatre, the show being central to the storyline, and the official Cirque Web site has a link both to some highlights from the program and some cool behind the scenes footage, including interviews with stars of the show. Barona Signs as UBT Tour Stop:

Barona is now officially a UBT tour stop. The casino located in the San Diego area and known for its liberal blackjack rules will host the $10,000 buy-in Tournament of Champions in November 2007.

Pitt & Clooney in Town:

Yup, they're here, live and in person at Bellagio, for the filming of Ocean's 13. (In truth, they've actually been here since Sunday, but we wanted to keep them to ourselves for a while.) Now we're ready to share. The property confirmed that George was still around; they weren't entirely sure about Brad (and even if they were, they "could neither confirm nor deny" it), but other sources suggest they'll both be here through Wednesday, so keep your eyes peeled, girls. You have been told.

Today's Wall Street Journal contains a feature in the "Marketplace" section on the Ultimate Blackjack Tour. The information is general, but the article's tone hammers home the power of the show's placement on CBS.

Last Day of Car Giveaway:

Ross Rumor:

According to a story in Celebrity Week, Motown diva Diana Ross, who was recently spotted at Caesars Palace, is in discussions about a deal that would make her one of the replacements, along with Elton John, Bette Midler, and Cher, to take over on a rotating basis when Celine Dion ends her run at Caesars late next year. We'll keep you posted as and when more details emerge.

Football Tonight:

Last week we stopped in at 17 Monday Night Football parties. As expected, Sam's Town and Boulder Station were best overall -- each offering a free hot dog (or hamburger at Sam's Town) and beer. The Price Is Right - Late!:

As of today, The Price is Right - Live show at Bally's has a new schedule for Friday nights, in order to accommodate out-of-town visitors who don't arrive until late. From now on, the Fri. shows will be at 7:30 pm and 10 pm (rather than 2:30 pm and 8 pm).

More Mexican Madness:

Ellis Island is also celebrating Mexican Independence Day this Saturday, with a drawing for an authentic Mexican sombrero (valued at $150) at 7 pm. Tonight sees the premiere of the new show at Luxor. The show performs Sunday through Thursday at 7 pm, with additional 9:30 pm shows Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Tickets are priced at $29 and $41, plus tax and handling fees.

Bikefest Weekend:

Thursday-Saturday, September 14-16, the Metric Revolution Biker Build Off will end its national tour dowtown on Fremont Street. Builders from around the country will display their 22 custom motorcycles Thursday and Friday from 10 am-11 pm and the public's invited to view the bikes and vote for a favorite builder. Saturday starts with Las Vegas Bikefest's Custom Bike Show from 11 am-4 pm and the night ends with a free concert from '80s rockers RATT, from 9 pm-11 pm.

Palms Signs on as UBT Tour Stop:

The Palms in Las Vegas has verified that it will host an Ultimate Blackjack Tour event next April. The tournament will run April 20-25. This is the first Las Vegas casino to sign on, though there is a tentative agreement with the Venetian.

Casinos Back to Form:

Bouncing back from June's year-over-year decline in gambling win, Nevada casinos notched an 8.4% increase in July. The win was up 10% on the Strip as the beat (-ing of the players) goes on.

Italian Festival Begins Today:

The Annual San Gennaro Feast runs from today through September 17, featuring food vendors, live acts, and amusement rides. The event's being held in the shopping center next to Target and Sears, at Flamingo and Canyon Dr. (off the 215). The $5.95 prime rib special that surprised us (for its price) at Hooters has already been raised to $6.95. It was marginal at the first price, which makes it a pass now.

E-Gambling Ban Phone March:

The Poker Player's Alliance (PPA) organization is supporting a "phone march on Capitol Hill" on September 12. Bill HR4411, the Internet Gambling Prohibition and Enforcement Act, which has already passed the House, is now in the Senate. President Bush has said if it passes the Senate, he will sign it into law. Senator Frist (R-TN) recently stated that he wants a vote on this very soon. The PPA opposes the bill based on how it feels it will negatively affect poker and has provided a phone number and other information for those who want to participate. Monday Night:

The MNF-party season kicks off with tonight's football double header. As of now, it looks like last year's main events -- Sam's Town and Boulder Station -- will be unchanged, offering a free hot dog and beer just for coming through the door. The LVA staff will be all over town checking in on these parties with reports forthcoming.

Free Car Washes:

All Terrible Herbst gas stations with car wash facilities are giving away free washes today. Participating locations include those at Maryland Pkwy. & Flamingo, Maryland Pkwy. & Tropicana, Tropicana & Topaz, and Sahara & Valley View.

Name Game:

The LV Review-Journal's Norm Clarke reports today that Harrah's may soon change its corporate name to Caesars and Bally's will become Horseshoe. It's speculation at this point, but the changes would be logical.

Football Today:

All the sports books will be jumping today. While most promote their Monday-night parties, Imperial Palace and Las Vegas Hilton have big Sunday shindigs, with food and drink deals.

Theater Football:

Galaxy Cannery Theatres presents televised football in high definition during the 2006-2007 season on Monday nights. The games will be projected via DLP Cinema® technology in Galaxy’s largest auditorium that features a 60-foot screen and seating for more than 500 people. This is a partnership with Fox Sports Radio 1460 AM. The event begins each Monday at 4 p.m. with host, Ball Park Frank. Admission is complimentary and seating is general admission. Each week, the Cannery Referee Girls will be visiting the auditorium serving up ice-cold beverages and food specials including hot dogs, nachos, popcorn and more. The radio station will be offering prizes including show tickets, as well as a weekly drawing for a trip to either San Diego or Phoenix that includes airfare and hotel accommodations. In addition guests can place wagers at the Cannery’s new Race & Sports Book, located adjacent to Galaxy Theatres.

Crazy Horse Closes:

The Crazy Horse Too gentleman's club is closed. It was closed by its owner voluntarily while a recent order to rescind its liquor license is challenged.

Cannery 2?:

Operators of the Nevada Palace have announced plans to replace the Boulder Highway casino with a newer version of the Cannery, which they also run. The Nevada Gaming Commission is due to vote on the proposal September 21.

Crazy Horse Too Doomed?:

Las Vegas City Council voted yesterday to strip the renowned gentlemen's club of its liquor license, on the grounds that the owner and a total of 16 former employees have pleaded guilty to federal tax-fraud, conspiracy, and extortion charges.

Red Rock Cancels Condos:

Station Casinos has canceled the Red Rock Resort condo project after the developer partnership fell apart. The company may still do condos, but is exploring other alternatives for the land.

Bizarre Billboard Robbery:

Las Vegas police are questioning suspects about a heist that took place on the Las Vegas Strip early this morning. Thieves got away with $30,000 from a billboard recently erected by an online gambling Website, which featured a plexiglass box containing $100,000 in genuine $1 bills, under the slogan "Win This Cash Free, Only at Sportsbook.com." Apparently, the crime took place while the security guard meant to be protecting it went to get a drink; he got back to find cash "falling from the sky." The remaining $70K or so is now in police custody. The company insists the theft was genuine and not a stunt.

Wynn Macau Opens:

Steve Wynn's Macau casino opened yesterday at midnight. The resort has 600 rooms, along with a Macau-like mix of 380 slots and 310 table games.

Stardust Announces Closing Date:

The Stardust has announced that it will close on November 1. Demolition of the resort will begin in early 2007, clearing the way for the $4 billion Echelon Place.

Atlantic City News:

Pinnacle Entertainment has signed a deal to buy the Atlantic City Sands for approximately $250 million. It's believed that the existing casino will be demolished to clear the way for a completely new resort, built along the lines of the highly successful Borgata.

More Fiesta Deals:

Continuing its expansion celebration, Fiesta Henderson has dropped the price of its buffet from $7.99 to $4.99 for lunch and from $9.99 to $6.99 for dinner. The offer is available Monday-Friday throughout September and it's not required that you have a players card. This is an excellent deal on a good buffet.

Ken Einiger on GSN Tonight:

Flamingo Room Revamp:

The famous Flamingo hotel has annouced a complete new look for 636 of its 3,500 guest rooms and suites. In addition to new decor, the renovated rooms will feature amenities including electronically-controlled drapes, wireless Internet access, and 42" flat-screen hi-def TVs, with built-in screens in the bathroom mirrors. At check-in, guests will receive a CD of rock songs specially compiled for the hotel. The makeover is scheduled to be completed before February '07.

Wynn in Newsweek:

The September 4 Newsweek contains a story on the impending opening of Wynn Macau. The article points out that whereas 450 million people are within a five-hour flight of Las Vegas, three billion people are within the same distance of Macau.

Harrah's Buys London Clubs:

It was announced yesterday that Harrah's Entertainment, already the world's largest casino operator, has acquire London Clubs International for $530 million. London Clubs operates six casinos in the U.K. and has five more under development. The company also operates two casinos in Egypt and one in South Africa.
