Snow Alert for the Palms!:

In the bizarrest promotion we've heard of since magician Nathan Burton's abortive attempt to spend 24 hours in a block of ice, the Palms has announced that this Friday will be "Snow Day," as they help launch the new chelada-style Miller Chill beer. From noon-4 p.m. guests and locals are invited to "Ditch Friday" and come play poolside in 25 tons of snow, complete with downhill sledding into the pool and a bevy of bikini-clad Miller Chill models. Anyone's welcome to attend, but you must be 21 or older to partake in the sledding.

Great Response to Contest:

We've been inundated (but feel free to keep 'em coming) so it'll take us awhile to sift through them all -- please bear with us. The former Ramada Express in Laughlin has changed its name to the Tropicana Express. The move seems to indicate that the Tropicana brand is safe, regardless of any redevelopment moves in Las Vegas.

Chance to See Millionaire Made:

If you'd like to see someone make a million dollars on the spot, get over to the MGM Grand today by 2:30 p.m. and see the culmination of a contest they ran in conjunction with Capitol Records and comedian Rodney Carrington. Eight finalists have been flown into Vegas and will have two chances to roll five lucky dice a specially designated crap table. The contestant that rolls all five specialty marked dice face-up, revealing the name of Carrington's newly released CD, will become a millionaire. If no one rolls the winning combination, then no one wins. We would calculate the odds for you, but as we haven't seen the dice in question, we don't know how many sides show the CD. The public's welcome to go along and watch. The table's been set up in front of L'Atelier on the MGM Grand casino floor.

McCarran Carousel Upgrade:

Life is destined to become easier for crowded baggage claim passengers at McCarran airport, with a $12 million carousel upgrade underway at Terminal 1.

Thomas & Mack #2 in World:

It's reported in the current Las Vegas Tribune that, according to the July issue of the trade publication Venues Today, Las Vegas' Thomas and Mack Arena ranked second in the world for ticket sales from November 2006 to May 2007, behind only New York's Madison Square Garden. Total gross ticket sales for the period totaled $27.18 million, with top sellers including boxing matches, basketball, and the National Finals Rodeo.

Pong Comes to LV Casinos:

It's just been announced Nevada gambling regulators have today approved the concept behind "Bally Pong," a slot machine that would for the first time allow hand-eye coordination to affect payout. Based on the 1970s Atari arcade game, the casino version will apparently be outfitted with retro lettering and chrome fixtures. The game enters a 45-second game of Pong, in which the player bounces a digital ball between thin paddles in a simulated game of ping pong, after three bonus icons line up on the five-reel video slot machine, a one-in-70 occurrence. The Gaming Commission approved the game on the condition that the bonus round offers a payout regardless of one's Pong ability. Bally Technologies said it's the first in a series of skill games it has planned, including "Breakout," a Pong-like game that awards points for hitting bricks with a ball.

Second Life Bans Gambling:

Linden Lab, the creator of the highly popular Second Life virtual world, has announced that all in-world casinos and miscellaneous gambling venues are to be shut down with immediate effect. Since the banning of actual online gambling in the US, the FBI has been running an investigation into Second Life to determine if it was breaking any laws. We haven't heard of them coming to any conclusions as yet, but it seems that Linden Lab has decided not to take any chances. Needless to say, many Second Lifers are less than happy with the decision.

Nevada Hit by Global Warming:

If it's been feeling even hotter than usual, that's because it is. According to a new study examining the impact of global warming across the country, Nevada is among the states with the most dramatic increase in average temperatures over the last 30 years. The average temperature in Reno from June through August last year was 75.6 degrees -- nearly seven degrees higher than the 30-year average and the biggest measure in more than 250 cities studied across the nation. Las Vegas' average temperature last summer was 3.6 degrees above the 30-year average from 1971-2000.

As football season looms, Cannery Resorts has just announced that their Cannery and Rampart properties will be the first in Las Vegas to offer a fantasy football contest, with a guaranteed $120,000 prize pool. Each entry will cost $25 and enter the contestant for every week of the professional football regular season. There's a limit of three entries per person and contestants that sign up before August 31 can enjoy an early bird special -- buy two entries and get a third entry free. You can pick up entries for the contest at the race and sport books at the Cannery Casino or Rampart Casino between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. daily.

Terrible's New Free Slot Tourney:

Terrible's casino has introduced a free and fully-automated slot tournament that will run now through September 30 and allows players to compete and win around-the-clock each day. The tournament's open to Terrible's Players Club members who can play three two-minute rounds per day (non-members can sign up for free anytime). Prizes will be awarded on a daily ($100 for 1st place) and weekly ($500 for 1st) basis, based on cumulative scores. Daily tournaments begin at 12:01 am and end at 11:59 pm. Every player is entitled to one daily prize per week. Weekly tournaments begin Tuesdays at 12:01 am and end the following Monday at 11:59 pm. Silverton Scraps Junk Bond Sale:

As reported by Reuters, the Silverton Casino has pulled a $215 million high-yield bond sale because of market conditions, the company announced today. The casino operator had planned to use proceeds to help pay for an expansion and repay existing debt, but junk-rated companies have had trouble finding buyers for debt recently as concerns about massive bond supply and a subprime mortgage crisis have turned investors more risk-averse.

It's been announced that the Grammy-award winning singer will extend her live show at the Flamingo through February 16, 2008.

Tao Tops the List:

According to Restaurants & Institutions magazine, which has been ranking the nation's top 100 eateries for a quarter-century, Tao Las Vegas is the highest grossing independent restaurant in the United States. In 2006, its first full year open, Tao did $55.2 million in business, $16 million more than its closest competitor, Tavern on the Green in New York, as reported in today's New York Times.

Aussies Aim High for Las Vegas:

According to Channel 8's "Eyewitness News," documents were lodged with local Clark County officials last week by James Packer's Crown Las Vegas consortium outlining plans to build the tallest casino on the Las Vegas Strip. In fact at 1888 feet the project, if approved, will see the construction of the tallest building in the whole of the US, 400 feet higher than the current record-holder, Chicago's Sears Tower.

Movie Night at Freakin' Frog:

Yup, Monday movie nights are back, as always with free popcorn. Tonight's offering is Bridge to Terabithia. Movie begins at 8 p.m.

$1 Billion Expansion for Caesars:

Harrah's Entertainment has just announced an approximately $1 billion expansion of Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, including a new 665-room hotel tower. The Octavius Tower will be located adjacent to a new 263,000-square-foot meeting and convention center. Other additions will include new luxury villa suites, pools, an outdoor spa, and garden wedding chapel. The expansion's slated for completion in early 2009.

Neteller Cuts a Deal:

Neteller has agreed to forfeit $136 million and admit wrongdoing for violating U.S. anti-Internet gambling laws to avoid prosecution on a criminal conspiracy charge. The company also agreed to return $94 million it held in the accounts of U.S. customers.

Vegas #9 Fashion City:

According to a recent survey by The Global Language Monitor, a non-profit group that tracks words and phrases in the media, on the Internet, and throughout the blogosphere, Las Vegas ranks ninth in the list of the world's top fashion cities. New York, Rome, Paris, London, and Milan were the top five.

Silverton Celebrates 10 years:

The Silverton continues to celebrate its 10th anniversary this month with a bunch of dining specials, a signature cocktail, a limited-edition gaming chip, and gambling bonuses, which include random $100 slot play giveaways this Friday.

Jerry Yang New WSOP Champ:

Jerry Yang, a 39-year-old psychologist from Temecula California, has won the 38th World Series of Poker main-event championship. Yang started fast on the final table and held the lead throughout, finally winning when he made an inside straight on the river to oust runner-up Tuan Lam. Yang's first prize was $8.25 million.

Free Margaritas at Forum Shops:

Beginning today and running through August 12, Las Vegas locals and neighboring city residents get a free house margarita with purchase of a food item at the new La Salsa Cantina that opens today in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace. The venue replaces the former La Salsa Cantina and is apparently a much more upscale affair.

Nevada Landing Auction:

The auction takes place on site (and online) from 10 a.m. tomorrow and the property's open for viewing until 5 p.m. this evening, so pop along if you're interested in picking up a piece of casino memorabilia. Vegas Scores for Decadence:

The July/August issue of Elite Traveler features the 101 most luxurious hotel and resort suites from around the world and Las Vegas is home to three of them, including the most expensive per night. The featured suites were selected by the magazine's editors together with a panel of globe-trotting celebrities, who used criteria including luxurious details, privacy, individuality, location, and one-of-a-kind designs. The Palms scored twice, once for the Hugh Hefner Sky Villa which, at $40,000 per night, also topped the most-expensive list, and again for the Hardwood Suite, with its indoor basketball court. Caesars Palace's new Absolut Suite was also picked for its eye-popping color bursts (inspired by the flavors of Absolut Vodka) and its spectacular views of the Las Vegas Strip.

Tournament Weekend:

In addition to a WPT poker tournament and the ongoing WSOP main event, two big blackjack tournaments run this weekend. Today is the second qualifier for the Hilton's Million Dollar Classic; entry fee is $2,500 and late registration runs until 10 am this morning. Gold Spike Sale:

Reportedly, Tamares Las Vegas Properties have confirmed a purchase agreement to sell the sagging downtown Gold Spike hotel to a Miami developer for $15.6 million. The developer plans to convert the hotel into a trendy boutique hotel possibly closing as early as September and reopening as an upscale boutique hotel with rooms running $125 to $150 per night.

Boyd Gaming Snags 210 Awards:

Boyd Gaming Corporation was a big winner in Casino Player magazine's annual Best of Gaming edition. Based on votes by Casino Player readers across the county, Boyd Gaming's 17 properties garnered 210 awards and received more than half of the first place awards in the Atlantic City and Las Vegas regions. Sam's Town Las Vegas and The Orleans combined to win 29 of the 56 categories in the Las Vegas locals market while Sam's Town Las Vegas was chosen as the Best Overall Hotel-Casino in Sin City.

Luxor To Drop Egyptian Theme:

The Luxor is poised to undergo a massive makeover that will see the property abandon its Egyptian theme in favor of something a little more generic. The pyramid-shaped building and the famous beam of light will remain but many of the themed restaurants, shows, and shops have already been replaced. Stay tuned as full details on the changes are expected to be released on July 12.

More WSOP Numbers:

Further numbers for the 2007 WSOP Main Event are as follows. The prize pool is a hair less than $60 million ($59,784,954, to be exact). The number of players who’ll get paid is 621 (just under 10% of the field). The minimum prize will be $20,320. There will be five prizes of more than a million dollars. And the grand prize will be $8,250,000.

Roy's Celebration:

In celebration of its five-year anniversary, Roy's, located at 620 E. Flamingo Rd., will have a special 5-course dinner perpared by Chef Roy Yamaguchi and special guests. Dinner will be $85 per person and will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. On Wednesday, Roy's Summerlin location, 8707 W. Out of the Hunt:

WSOP Numbers:

As expected, the number of entrants for the World Series of Poker main event has decreased this year, dropping from 8,773 to 6,358. This year's winner will take down a little less than $8.25 million.

The Day 1-C leader in the World Series of Poker main event was Jeff Norman, with 281,300, which also makes him the overall leader after three preliminary days. Others high on the leader board include Lee Watkinson (118,100), JC Tran (100,200), and Hasan Habib (89,500). The final Day-1 event runs today, beginning at noon. The tournament is open to the public.

Results from Day 1-B:

The Day 1-B leader in the World Series of Poker main event was Dag Martin Mikkelsen, with 236,000. Others high on the leader board include, David Pham (140,000), Scotty Nguyen (129,000), and Barry Johnston (118,500).

Today through July 12, the Silverton will host the 2007 Mrs United States National Pageant, with 54 married women vying for the crown.

Sportingbet Deal Off:

British online gambling company Sportingbet PLC has announced that takeover talks with Austrian-based internet bookmaker Bwin have been terminated by mutual consent. The breakdown has been attributed to the legal and regulatory issues currently affecting the online gambling industry in the wake of the U.S.'s Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act and uncertainties within the European market. It's the same fate that befell earlier talks between Ladbrokes and 888.

Gaming Life Expo:

The Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino's 3rd Annual 2007 Gaming Life Expo (GLE) along side the WSOP is running now thru July 8 featuring girls, gaming products, and gear. Shooting at New York-New York:

Early this morning a man on a walkway over the casino floor of the Strip property opened fire on the players below, wounding three people before he was tackled by off-duty police officers. Eye-witnesses described how pandemonium broke out, as panicked gamblers tried to escape the rain of bullets. Apparently, the shooter is a Las Vegas resident in his 50s who was neither a hotel employee nor guest. His motives remain unknown. A spokesman for the casino confirmed that its operations had been fully restored and that guests are being informed it's business as usual.

"Big One" Starts Today:

The World Series of Poker main event begins today with the first of four "Day-1" sessions in the $10,000 buy-in tournament. The original plan was to run the first round over three days, but it was extended to four so no one would have to play outside in "the tent" (a broken air-conditioning situation was the last straw for the players in tolerating the outside venue). The over/under for entrants is being quoted at 7,000; it's not expected that last year's record field of 8,773 will be reached.

Stars Here for Charity Poker:

A host of Hollywood stars, likely to include George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon, plus many celebrity poker pros, are due to be taking part in Don Cheadle and Annie Duke's "Ante Up for Africa" charity poker tournament today, as part of the WSOP at the Rio.

Trump Sale is Off:

Trump Entertainment Resorts has announced that it's not likely to be sold, after the board determined that none of the 'indications of interest' received had met its expectations. The announcement caused shares of the debt-laden company to plunge nearly 17 percent, while Goldman Sachs downgraded the stock to neutral.

July 4 Event Round-Up:

Okay, so there's no Desert Breeze spectacular this year, but there will still be the odd pyrotechnic display lighting up the night sky, plus other less explosive celebrations. Here's the lowdown. Stepping in to save the day, the Las Vegas Hilton will be putting on a firework display after Wednesday's "Cool by the Pool" party, at around 8 p.m. Caesars has a private firework party for VIPs. We're not sure what time they'll be setting off the fireworks, but we're guessing between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. The top of the Rio's parking lot would be a good (free) vantage point. Tao Beach will be holding a BBQ and poolside celebration featuring a performance by Chris Clouse. No admission, entrance via TAO night club. Open at 10 p.m. and closing with the club. As already listed in this column, there's a free poolside concert at the Silverton. The Fremont Street Experience will be showing it's patriotic "American Freedom" light show for the holiday. Boulder City hosts their 59th annual "Damboree", with festivities all day and fireworks at dusk. Henderson's also holding a July 4th celebration at the Events Plaza, with live music and fireworks at 9 p.m. Hills Park in Summerlin is the venue for the "Star-Spangled Spectacular", with music from the Las Vegas Philharmonic and a full firework display. And if you just want to cool down, Clark County's "Red, White and Splash" offer means free admission to all public pools from noon until 4 p.m. (5 p.m. for Desert Breeze).

No More Topless TAO:

TAO Beach no longer offers "European-style" (i.e., topless) sunbathing. The official word doesn't shed much light on the decision, only that it "was a brand decision by management." Other news from the venue is that there will be a special July 4th opening from 10 p.m. through close, as an extension of the night club, for a special July Independence Day poolside BBQ celebration, featuring a performance by Chris Clouse. No separate admission -- entrance via TAO nightclub.

Free Concert at Orleans:

Rodman Wins Bracelet:

After and 8-1/2 hour final table, 3-1/2 hours of which were heads-up play, Blair Rodman emerged the winner of the $2,000 buy-in no-limit hold 'em event and claimied his first World Series of Poker bracelet and $707,898 in prize money. Blair has been LVA's poker expert for many years, and is the author, with Lee Nelson, of our acclaimed poker-tournament book, Kill Phil. Blair says he'll take a couple days off, then turn his attention to the "big one."

Rodman in WSOP Final:

Our Kill Phil author, Blair Rodman, is on the final table of the World Series of Poker $2,000 buy-in no-limit hold 'em event. The final begins today at 2 pm at the Rio.
