Weekend Traffic Nightmare Warning:
November 30, 2007 19:40
Tomorrow sees the 5km Great Santa Run all around downtown, which is attempting to break a World Record for the number of Santas in one place simultaneously, while Sunday it's the annual Las Vegas Marathon and Half-Marathon, which begins and ends at Mandalay Bay and occupies routes involving Martin Luther King Blvd., Smoke Ranch Rd., Torrey Pines Drive, and Twain Ave. and Las Vegas Blvd. Sth., Industrial Road and Frank Sinatra Dri., respectively. From past experience, all we can tell you is that it's going to be hell on the roads anywhere near the Strip and downtown, so avoid at all costs if you can.
Click here for the Great Santa Run route map, and here if you still want to enter (online registration's closed, but you can fax entry fees up until 4 p.m. today), and click here for the marathon routes.

Tao Waitress Named Vegas' Sexiest:
November 29, 2007 17:06
That ever-vexing question, "Who is the sexiest nightclub server in Las Vegas," has finally been answered. Late entrant Robbie Hardy snagged 46,358 votes, enabling her to beat off competition from Body English's Amber Buckley and as-yet-unopened Bank Nightclub's Natasha Meade. Hardy, who serves cocktails at Tao Nightclub & Asian Bistro, won $10,000, with the runner-up bagging a free trip to the Bahamas' Atlantis Resort.
The plebiscite, held by SpyOnVegas.com, was decided by visitors to SpyOn's Web site, who gave Hardy the nod. The nine-year Vegas resident credits long experience on the nightclub scene with her win, saying, "I've been here so long, I know a lot of people."
Racino Re-Thinks Slots:
November 29, 2007 15:36
In a rare move, Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino is drastically reducing its slot floor. The Broward County, Florida, racetrack and casino will reduce its slot inventory from 1,200 to 516. Three hundred-plus video poker machines will take up much of the space vacated by slots, as will a new "racing lounge." Penny and two-cent slots will also be increased, in an effort to turn around Gulfstream's poor performance. Slot players are gravitating to rivals Mardi Gras Racetrack, which does twice as much slot revenue per day, and The Isle at Pompano Park, which gets almost three times as much slot coin as Gulfstream.
Binion Back in the Game:
November 29, 2007 15:35

His Binion Family Trust, in conjunction with Marvel Gaming, has submitted a proposal for a $350 million casino, to be owned by the Kansas Lottery Commission. His rivals include Harrah's Entertainment, which has put forward a plan for a half-billion-dollar casino resort. Harrah's stated intent is to leverage its ties with Country Music Television and artists like Toby Keith in order to market the property. As for Binion, he was a highly visible presence at the recent Global Gaming Expo, vigorously working the show floor near the IGT booth.

The #1 Selling Gambling Book on Amazon Is...:
November 28, 2007 17:59
HP's Kill Everyone. Yup, the sequel to best-seller Kill Phil is currently #1 on Amazon.com list of gambling titles, ahead of the much-revered Harrington on Hold'em Vol.1 and Bringing Down the House, the famous story of the MIT blackjack team that's soon to be released as a movie starring Kevin Spacey.

New Casino Behind Rio?:
November 28, 2007 17:55
Henderson-based lodgings baron Gary Tharaldson is at it again. The reclusive motelier, who feinted at developing a megaresort on the site of the Westward Ho last year, ultimately flipped it to Harrah's Entertainment (which then swapped it to Boyd Gaming for the former Barbary Coast casino) at a significant markup. This coming Tuesday, Clark County planners are scheduled to look over a new Tharaldson proposal, this one for a casino resort at the intersection of Dean Martin and Rio drives. Tharaldson's project is expected to go before the full County Commission on Jan. 2.

November 28, 2007 15:18

New Stirrings on Resort Front:
November 28, 2007 15:42
Remember the Aqua Blue condo project, which was to have been piggybacked onto a redesigned Ellis Island Casino? It was scrapped two and a half years ago but may be alive and kicking once more. A reliable source tells LVA that the Clark County Commission is slated to take a look next Wednesday at a 40-story 480-foot condo tower. As originally conceived, the ill-fated Aqua Blue project would have arisen on the site of a Super 8 motel on Koval Lane.

Today's Pizza Poll:
November 21, 2007 09:47
If you want to vote "Other" in today's poll, don't forget to send us what your choice is. The "Other" option includes and email link or, if you've already voted, just use the "Suggest a Poll" link to email us the name of your favorite New York-style pizza joint and why you love it. Thank you!
And if you're not sure what the difference is, we'll go into detail when we run the first pizza poll answer, but in short, NY-style is identified by its wide, thin, foldable slices -- traditionally hand-tossed and easy on the sauce. Chicago-style is the deep-dish variety, with buttery crust, lots of cheese, and chunky tomato sauce.

Reach for the sky? FAA says ‘no’:
November 20, 2007 11:40
To the surprise of few, the Federal Aviation Administration chopped another 486 feet off the proposed height of Crown Las Vegas (formerly Las Vegas Tower). The planned skyscraper is the pipe dream of Texas developer Christopher Milam, who recently landed the backing of Australian publishing heir James Packer. While Milam had originally pitched the FAA on an 1,888-foot structure (thereby overtopping New York City’s 1,776-foot Freedom Tower), he scaled his proposal back to 1,550 feet last September. Not good enough.
However, the FAA’s counterproposal of 1,064 feet is a substantial variance from the 708-foot vertical limit it normally places on Strip towers. "You can’t say this clears the way for similar construction," an FAA spokesman contended to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, "because every building review is based on its own characteristics." The question for Milam (who has yet to close the purchase of the underlying Wet ‘n Wild site) may be: Have I lost 486 feet or gained 356?

Mayor Geno Martini says the aging building probably would be torn down to make way for the city's downtown redevelopment efforts and speculated that the poor state of the roof was probably one of the reasons for the closure.

We haven't checked them out yet, but the current writer was for many years a Tesco shopper in London, so expect a full report and comparison in due course.

Edge's Harmon Project Back From the Dead:
November 16, 2007 14:58
Although Edge Group's megaresort project at the northeast corner of Harmon Avenue and Koval Lane has looked deader than a doornail, there are new signs of life. Edge and its partners have applied to the Las Vegas County Commission, an LVA source reports, for a 44-story tower, 472 feet high and containing 300 hotel rooms, 629 residential condominiums, and 927 resort condos -- 1,856 units *in toto.* Edge's previous plans called for 2,768 units.
While it sold off the majority of its interest, Edge continues to hold a one-fifth stake in the project, almost half of which is now held by Africa Israel Investments, owner of the Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn brands. Other equity holders include The Witkoff Group and -- reportedly -- Credit Suisse, though LVA is unable to confirm the latter's involvement.

For anyone who missed Thursday's QoD, Sexxpresso is a new coffee joint on the east side (670 E. Flamingo, to be precise), where the suggestively-named hot beverages are served by a bevy of Bodacious Baristas (ladies in lingerie). Strictly in the interests of research, our Mailroom Manager stopped by for his morning caffeine dose today and can confirm that if you keep your receipt and bring it back the next day, you get two coffees for the price of one.

CORRECTION: Bikini Party No Longer Open:
November 16, 2007 12:42
We just received a call from Hawaiian Tropic Zone's PR company. They'd been told the party was open to all but they just got there to find that HTZ has changed its mind at the last minute, without telling them, and decided it's for invitees only. We're assured that it's quite a spectacle out there, with the bikini babes playing with their beachballs, so still worth heading over for a peak if you happen to be in the area. Sorry for any wasted journeys.
Show and Teller:
November 16, 2007 12:38
Today's USA Today contains a feature in the "Life" section about Teller's -- of the comedy-magic duo Penn & Teller -- house in Las Vegas. "Did we mention the house has multiple mirrors, hidden doors, screaming tables and one talking bear sculpture who plays card tricks on visitors?" You get the idea.

Westin Deal Too Good To Last:
November 15, 2007 16:54
With shades of their last notable sign-up promotion back in 2005, when the Westin Casuarina offered a "pay $300 and get $600 in free-play" deal that lasted less than 24 hours, due to every advantage player and their dog, granny, and nextdoor neighbor lining up to sign up, the latest buy-in for $50 and get $90 in free-play promotion has already been scrapped for anyone other than hotel guests. Nice while it lasted.

Planet Hollywood Grand Opening:
November 15, 2007 12:03
Yes, despite the fact that the new signage went up in April and the interior's been de-Aladdinized for a long time now, this weekend marks the "official" grand opening of the property's new incarnation.
The organizers are promising "the biggest party Las Vegas has ever seen" but the concerts and other parties are for invited guests only and the mezzanine-level restaurants are closed for private events. However, the entire casino level (including restaurants) will remain open to all and the whole joint's due to be crawling with celebrities from this evening through Saturday night, when the official red carpet event takes place on the Strip (which everyone's invited to watch). Wide-Open Gambling in Florida?:
November 15, 2007 09:53
After months of negotiations, the Seminoles and the Florida governor have signed a deal allowing the tribe to open up Class III slot machines and table games at their seven Sunshine State casinos. The tribe currently operates more than 9,000 Class II slots (run by a bingo-based system controller) at its seven locations. In return for the Class III slots (run by a random number generator) and games like baccarat and blackjack, the tribe will pay the state a $50 million signing bonus, plus guaranteed annual payments of $100 million. But don't brush up on basic strategy just yet; Florida's Attorney General and the state legislature will almost certainly challenge the agreement in court.

November 14, 2007 11:54
As mentioned in this column earlier in the week, this Thursday heralds the release of the 2007 Beaujolais Nouveau and Paris Las Vegas is leading the city's festivities.
According to a long tradition regulated by French law (they take their wine very seriously), the new vintage is released no sooner than the third Thursday in November, six weeks after the harvest. At one minute past midnight, huge celebrations are held worldwide and Paris Las Vegas will join in by lighting up its 50-story replica of the Eiffel Tower in red at midnight tonight. The flicking of the switch is scheduled to be performed by current "Dancing with the Stars" contestant Jenny Garth, who will then join her dancer partner at the base of the tower to receive the cask of Beaujolais, delivered by horse-drawn carriage.
The lighting will activate a bevy of related week-long resort celebrations, including free wine samplings for guests upon check in and special menus at Mon Ami Gabi, Les Artistes Steakhouse, and the Eiffel Tower Restaurant.

Frontier Bites the Dust -- See Implosion:
November 13, 2007 10:00
As scheduled, the New Frontier -- the second property ever to open on the Las Vegas Strip -- was imploded early this morning. Sent off with a booming fireworks display, the 16-story hotel tower was felled with over 1,000 pounds of explosives to make way for the new Plaza resort, due to open in 2011.
Originating as a nightclub called the Pair-O-Dice, which opened in 1930, in its later resort incarnation the New Frontier, once owned by Howard Hughes, played host to such Vegas legends as Elvis, Siegfried and Roy, and Wayne Newton. For those still wishing to pay their last respects or grab a photo opportunity, we can confirm that the front sign and portico are still standing, but the tower has been collapsed into the pool area. Views of the rubble are easy to come by around a currently unblocked perimeter. Or you can look right into the pile driving east on the Desert Inn connector.
If you missed the excitement last night, there are plenty of places online to catch the implosion, with one of the better ones on the Channel 8 "Eyewitness News" site at www.lasvegasnow.com.

WSJ Down on Vegas:
November 10, 2007 12:05
A big story in today's Wall Street Journal discusses alternative casino jurisdictions, such as Biloxi, Detroit, and California. We think there's some truth to it, but Las Vegas visitation and profits continue to rise. Interesting article.

Whole New Hi-Tech Transport System for Strip:
November 07, 2007 09:09
Today marks the launch of a whole new transportation option for the Las Vegas Strip, as the Strip Trolley and Vegas.com launch their new collaborative project -- a system of various sized buses that will compete with the Deuce double deckers, offering riders the chance to get on and off at numerous stops on both sides of the Strip and make dinner reservations and buy show tickets and nightclub passes while on board, via touch-screen TVs.
The new venture, named the Vegas.com Arrow, replaces the old Strip Trolley. Like the old trolly buses, it links to downtown and now also links to the Las Vegas Monorail, plus stops at most major Strip hotels. Fares are $2.50 for one ride or $10 for an all-day pass that includes the monorail. The day passes must be purchased in advance either via the Vegas.com Web site or at participating Strip hotels -- see our Transportation section (in "Visitor Info") for more details. This compares with Deuce fares of $2 for a one-way ride, $5 for an all-day pass, and $40 for a monthly pass that's good for the Deuce or any bus throughout the Las Vegas Valley.
