AC Gets Gay-Friendly:

Harrah's Entertainment just announced that they'll be hosting a weekend-long "OUT in Atlantic City" celebration aimed specifically at the LGBT Community from September 25th through the 27th. Scenic Byways Plan Moves Foward:

Today's Las Vegas Review-Journal documents how progress is being made on the plan to add restored vintage neon signage to the median of Las Vegas Boulevard downtown from Washington Ave. to Sahara Ave. as part of the road's induction into the National Scenic Byways plan. It's Official -- Parlays Only for DE:

A federal appeals court today confirmed that Delaware's plans for a new sports betting lottery will be limited to parlay bets on professional football games only. Bettors at the state's three racetrack casinos will have to pick the winners of at least three separate NFL games in a single wager. Delaware had been counting on sports betting to generate about $53 million a year to help plug a nearly $800 million budget deficit. "The state's attorneys are reviewing today's written opinion from the Court of Appeals and we will be discussing our legal options with them," said a spokesman.

Bad Air Advisory:

An air-quality advisory for the Vegas valley has just been extended through Wednesday as the wildfires raging in southern California continue to create smoky conditions in Las Vegas and its environs. Anyone suffering from breathing difficulties, asthma etc. is recommended to spend as little time outdoors as possible while these conditions persist.

The Rise of the Penny Slot:

USA Today features an interesting article about how the penny slot is making a big comeback all over casinoland. The newspaper's study of seven gambling states revealed that the penny slot is the one form of gambling that seems to be bucking the recession trend, with casinos now switching out dollar machines for the popular penny models. For example, in Nevada revenue from these machines was up 3% in the year ending June 30, while the 32 other types of gambling tracked by Nevada regulators — from sports betting to roulette — plummeted 19%. More Sinful Brew:

Las Vegas' own Sin City Brewing Co. will debut its third Las Vegas location inside the Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian on September 10. It will be open daily, with the following hours: Sunday–Thursday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday and Saturday: 10 a.m. to midnight. The other two venues can be found in the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood and in the Flamingo.

Beacher's Back:

Jeff Beacher brings his "Madhouse" (complete with a special appearance by Alvin and Chipmunks) back to Las Vegas with an appearance at the Mirage's Jet nightclub tonight at 10:30 p.m. According to his MySpace page, the Madhouse will be holding auditions in Las Vegas September 1, although we've seen no other details of this, and the Costume Ball is due to be at the Mirage for Halloween. McCarran Goes Hi-Tech:

As reported in today's Las Vegas Review-Journal, Terminal 2 at Las Vegas' primary airport has introduced facial-recognition scanners and fingerprint pads to process international visitors. Those who sign up for the Global Entry program must initially be photographed, have their fingerprints scanned, and be interviewed in order to be approved and added to the Customs' database. Once, registered, they will be expedited through customs when they arrive at McCarran's international terminal. Random security checks will still be performed on some travelers. Registration for the biometric program costs $100 and is good for five years.

Restaurant Week Deals:

Three Square, the Las Vegas food bank that distributes to non-profit and faith-based organizations and facilitates childhood and senior nutrition programs, is holding its annual "Restaurant Week" fundraiser from August 31-September 6. Many restaurants throughout the Las Vegas valley participate, offering special prix fixe menus (for $20.09, $30.09, and/or $50.09) that enable you to check out some gourmet dining experiences for an affordable price, while supporting a good cause. The Eastside Cannery wraps up its birthday celebrations today with free cake and champagne from 2-6 p.m.

New Pool Party:

Labor Day traditionally marked the end of pool season in Las Vegas, but Green Valley Ranch is swimming against the flow and launching a new pool party tonight. ‘Wine Down with Endless Summer’ is a new free Saturday night reggae party at The Pond sponsored by Rock n’ Roll Wine and Red Stripe beer. Must be 21+.

PA Casino Fined:

Downs Racing, L.P., operators of Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, was fined $97,500 yesterday by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board for 15 separate violations dealing with underage gambling and access to the gaming floor by underage individuals between August 2008 and March 2009.

Celebrity Chef Class:

Chef Andre Rochat, who has a restaurant at the Monte Carlo (and formerly ran a beloved eatery downtown) will be demonstrating one of his signature dishes tomorrow at the Centre Grill at Whole Foods Market in Henderson from noon-3pm! The event is free and open to the public.

Tuscany Giveaway:

The Tuscany Casino will hold a player appreciation gift giveaway today from noon until 11 p.m.

Rain DJ Found Dead:

DJ AM, real name Adam Goldstein, was found dead in his New York apartment this morning. According to news sources, a friend contacted the authorities after not hearing from him for several days. The fire department broke down the door to his 7th story SoHo aparment and found the celebrity DJ dead, apparently surrounded by prescription pill bottles and "drug paraphernalia." Goldstein, along with drummer Travis Barker, were the lone survivors of a small plane crash in South Carolina in September of last year and the DJ received severe burn injuries in the accident. Unofficial reports suggest he was suffering from depression and having diffulty coming off painkillers prescribed after the crash. In addition to performing at some of Hollywood's most exclusive parties, Goldstein was also known for dating Nicole Richie and Mandy Moore. He had been "resident" Friday night DJ at Rain nightclub at the Palms for some time and was schedule to spin there tonight. So far there's been no word from the property.

A.C. No Shoo-In for Trump:

A judge ruled today that Donald Trump must compete with bondholders for control of the bankrupt casino company that bears his name and that Trump Entertainment Resorts Inc.'s bondholders have the right to pursue their offer to invest $175 million in the casino operator. It's a triumph for the bondholders, who are owed $1.25 billion and asked Judith Wizmur to revoke the exclusive right of Trump Entertainment's managers to propose a reorganization plan.

Eastside Cannery is celebrating its one-year anniversary with complimentary cake and champagne until 6 p.m. today and from 2-6 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday. Luxor Bombers Convicted:

Breaking News via Channel 8 Eyewitness News: A jury has found 33-year-old Omar Rueda-Denvers and 29-year-old Porfirio Duarte-Herrera guilty of murder for the parking lot bombing at the Luxor that killed one man in 2007.

Employment Numbers: The Ugly, the Ugly, and the Ugly:

If you’re looking for a job, don’t bother coming to Las Vegas. According to the Nevada Employment, Training and Rehabilitation Department, the Las Vegas unemployment rate has jumped nearly 100%, to 13.1%, since July 2008, when it was 6.9% (it was 4.6% in July 2006). It’s estimated that CityCenter’s 12,000 jobs, which will be filled by the end of the year, will lower the unemployment figure by 1%, but another 48,000 jobs are needed to bring employment back up to the pre-recession level. Las Vegas has the fifth highest unemployment rate of all U.S. cities its size and Nevada’s joblessness at 12.5% is the third highest, behind Michigan’s 15% and Rhode Island’s 12.7%.

Free Play Not Free in CT:

Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun have agreed to pay $25 million to the state for slot free-play promotions they've been running. The promos involved giving out coupons for free slot play, which Attorney general Richard Blumenthal ruled was, "in effect, money that people would otherwise spend out of their own pockets, so, in effect, they are wagering and it is effectively revenue." In their gambling compact with the state, the two tribes agree to pay twenty-five percent of their revenues to the state. The fact that free play has been ruled revenue in Connecticut could change the way other states look at the same issue.

Fontainebleau Loses a Round:

A U.S. District Court judge in Miami has ruled that the lenders for Fontainebleau, not the developer, are correct in their interpretation of a key provision in the complicated contract among the parties. This means that Bank of America and its nine lending partners will not have to reinstate the loan agreement. B of A could also have an advantage in court if Fontainebleau pursues its suit with a trial. Analysts don’t expect F’bleau to spend the money to take it to trial, as a settlement is in the works due to court-ordered mediation.

Idol Finalist Joins Vegas Band:

The Idols are gathering: First rumors that Paula Abdul will be be bringing her song and dance show to Las Vegas, and now word from Sunset Station that "American Idol" season 7 finalist David Hernandez is joining ENVY, the contemporary/hip hop band that performs inside Club Madrid every Friday. The show's free and doors open at 9 p.m.

Carmen Electra Returns:

We just learned (via Daily Fiasco) that Carmen Electra will be reprising her guest role in MGM Grand's Crazy Horse Paris topless revue next month. Back in July the actress/model became the second only guest star (the first being modern burlesque queen Dita Von Teese) and wowed the crowd by appearing fully topless. She evidently enjoyed the experience and will be back in show from October 7-12 and 14-17.

Another MJ Tribute:

American Superstars, the celebrity-artist tribute show at the Stratosphere, which featuers Michael Jackson impersonator Frederick Henry, will be including a special tribute to the entertainer with the Desert Angels Gospel Choir during Saturday's performance (which would have been Jackson's 50th birthday). Wildlife Habitat Debuts Tomorrow:

The Las Vegas Wetlands Park new 112-acre habitat for wildlife has its dedication ceremony at 8 a.m. tomorrow, Friday August 28. The newly constructed site at the far eastern end of Tropicana Ave. (7050 Wetlands Park La.) consists of a 112-acre site featuring seasonal and permanent wetlands, ponds, and a mesquite tree community designed to provide habitats for wildlife and migratory birds previously disturbed by the development of southern Nevada. Paula Abdul Vegas-Bound?:

Ex-"American Idol" judge and choreographer Paula Abdul is rumored to be in discussions with a number of Las Vegas resorts, including the Wynn, Las Vegas Hilton, and Venetian, regarding bringing a song-and-dance show to Sin City. She's been developing the show for several years and this would not be her first foray into Las Vegas (a relationship planned with the a few years back Silverton fell down after a personnel clash). We'll keep you posted.

Hang With Criss Angel Tonight:

Fans of the "Mindfreak" magician, who's currently starring in Cirque du Soleil's Criss Angel Believe, can now hang out with the man himself on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10:30 p.m.-1 a.m. in Luxor's Liquidity bar. Future appearances are scheduled for Sat. August 29, Weds. September 2, Sat. September 5 , Sun. September 9, and Weds. Sept 12. Tentatively, after Sept 12 he'll be there on Friday and Saturday nights. Two-drink minimum and must be 21+.

New Burger Chain Coming:

Smashburger will be extending its "fast-casual" and "better-burger" concepts to the southwest, with plans to introduce 20 restaurants in the Las Vegas metro area. Smashburgers are made from 100 percent fresh Angus beef and served on butter-toasted artisan buns.

Bally's Book's Back:

The race and sports book at Bally's, closed since April 1 for remodeling, reopened today. The new book features an exclusive VIP viewing area with hi def screens and couches. Celebrity appearances and promotions are planned, but no details have been announced as yet.

Delaware Going Forward with Sports Lottery:

Officials and casino operators in Delaware are forging ahead with the plan to introduce parlay betting on NFL games by early next month despite Monday's Court of Appeals ruling that the state's plans to add single-game sports betting violated a 1992 federal ban on sports gambling. The exact form that the new sports lottery will take is still being finalized.

Stations Seek More Legal Muscle:

As in-fighting escalates between Station Casino Inc.'s lenders, the casino company has sought court approval to pay for more attorneys in order to deal with threatened litigation associated with its bankruptcy case, reports the Las Vegas Sun. Hopes for a quick resolution to the case are receding after court papers filed last week show that it's becoming increasingly complex and contentious as the company, lenders, and other creditors argue about the restructuring process.

Party to Buy World Poker Tour:

Online gambling company PartyGaming announced yesterday, through its subsidiary Peerless Media, that it has entered into an agreement to acquire the business and substantially all of the assets of WPT Enterprises Inc for $12.3 million in cash.

Sands Hearts Smokers:

While other casinos have been making moves away from the smoky ambience of yore, with most Las Vegas poker rooms now non-smoking and a recent announcement from the upcoming Aria hotel-casino at CityCenter that dealers will be protected from smoke by a "wall of air" and that non-smokers will be able to navigate their way around via buffered smoke-free "pathways," Sands Bethlehem Casino yesterday went in the complete opposite direction and doubled its smoking area. Citing a revenue report that showed smokers are wagering much more than nonsmokers, the casino increased the number/area of smoker-friendly machines to 50%, the maximum permitted by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

Fertitta Funeral Set:

Station Casinos today announced that a vigil is planned in Las Vegas this Friday for its 70-year-old founder Frank Fertitta II, who died last Friday after complications from heart disease. The vigil and funeral, which will take place on Saturday morning, will both be open to the public, although the locations have yet to be announced. The burial will be private.

Delaware Derailed:

In a semi-shocker, a three-judge panel of the U.S. 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals ruled today that Delaware can not offer single-game sports wagering. Ruling that the state’s plan violated the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, Delaware appears to now be relegated to parlay-type wagers only, which will severely diminish its appeal.

Tomorrow from 10 p.m. the N9NE Group at the Palms is holding a "So You Think You Can Intern" job fair in the Playboy Club, with a marketing position with N9NE up for grabs. The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory and severe thunderstorm watch for Clark County. The flood advisory is in effect until 5:45 p.m. and the severe thunderstorm watch is effective until 11:00 p.m. Drive carefully.

Airport Numbers Drop Again:

Following suit with gambling win and visitation (or more like leading them), traffic at McCarran Airport was down year-over-year in July by 9.3%. It was the 17th consecutive monthly decline in the airport figures, which are released a month ahead of most other indicators.

Gold Coast Bonuses:

Gold Coast is awarding 7X points for slots and 5X points for video poker today. The offer will be repeated Fri.-Sat. next weekend. Olden Gate:

An interesting article in today's LV Review-Journal identifies 10 of Las Vegas' oldest coninuously run businesses. Oldest on the list, and the only casino, is Golden Gate, which debuted as the Hotel Nevada in 1906. Also listed are White Cross Drugs (1918), Pioneer Pawn (circa 1931), and KENO radio (1940).

Annual Shag-a-Thon:

Shag Me Salon (4110 S. Maryland Pkwy) is holding its second annual charity Shag-a-Thon today, with patrons getting wash/cut for $20 donation (including tip) to American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Walk-ins only; regular customers may request their favorite stylist.

More Slots for CA:

A new California law allows tribal casinos there to add 10,549 slots, bringing the total legal number in the state to more than 83,000 machines. While that represents the biggest Indian-gaming market in the U.S. -- and it's thought that up to 55,000 more could be approved over the next two years -- it's still well off Nevada's approximately 194,000 machines.

Sports Betting Seminar Today:

The annual VegasInsider.com sports betting seminar kicks off today at 10 am at Red Rock. Many top sports book operators and handicapping/betting experts, including Fezzik, will be on hand. The seminars are free.

UFC Marathon:

Spike TV’s offering a treat for fight fans today with a solid block of UFC programming kicking off at 1 p.m. ET/PT with a replay of UFC Fight Night 4 and concluding with the "Ultimate Iceman: Chuck Liddell" special at 2:30 a.m. PT/ET. The Return of Privé:

The Planet Hollywood-housed nightclub that's been at the center of the recent Las Vegas nightlife crackdown reopens tonight with a temporary 30-day license. Beyond that, its future remains in the balance pending an investigation that may take up to six months. In the meantime, expect a packed house for the comeback party tonight, with a live set by DJ Jermaine Dupri.

Good News for Brewheads:

The former Brew Pub at the Monte Carlo, which first stopped brewing and then closed for good on July 12, will be reopening September 2 as The Pub. It will feature 50 beers on tap, plus a new menu (including 15 specialty burgers and a build-your-own option), plenty of screens to watch your favorite sporting events, weekend beer pong, and entertainment from music duo Zowie Bowie. New Name in Black Book:

The Nevada State Gaming Control Board has added convicted slot cheat Michael McNeive to its List of Excluded Persons. Known colloquially as the "Black Book," the list was originally created in 1960 as part of the effort to combat organized crime but also features known cheats and it's a gross misdemeanor for anyone on the list to enter a casino. The addition of McNeive brings the current count of "Excluded Persons" to 36.

Frank Fertitta II Dies:

Station Casinos founder Frank Fertitta Jr., father of Frank Fertitta III and Lorenzo Fertitta, died at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center this morning during heart surgery. We'll bring you more details as we get them.

Hot Hot Hot:

There's another excessive heat warning for this afternoon, with temperatures expected to reach 110 in the Vegas valley. Be sure to keep yourself (and your pets) hydrated. There should be some respite over the weekend, with thunderstorms on the cards.

"10 Great" Again:

One area Las Vegas isn't lagging is in appearances in USA Today's "10 Great Places" listings. Las Vegas made another one today as one of "10 Great Places to Find True Americana." Can you guess what was featured (we couldn't)? It's the Miss America pageant, which has been held here for the past six years since relocating from Atlantic City.

Happenings at the Sahara:

The north-Strip property just announced a slew of news, including the reopening of the House of Lords steakhouse (once frequented by the Rat Pack) with some wallet-friendly menu items, the October debut of 3 Lions Tattoo (which currently has a shop in the Riviera), and the hosting of the 2009 BikeFest event, which takes place October 1-4.

Vegas Top Pick for Labor Day:

According to a report just released by Orbitz.com, Las Vegas is the number one choice among Labor Day weekend destinations, ahead of New York and Cancun. The same report also reveals that the average hotel room-rate for the weekend is $108 this year, down from the $136 Vegas average last year. Casino Winners & Losers:

Atlantic City continues to suffer, with gaming revenues down 20% for the second quarter, and gross casino revenue was down at the 11 casinos in South Mississippi in July. On the other hand, Louisina reported a 13.9% increase for the month of July, up $27 million from the $193.4 that was reported in June and Colorado reported a 16% increase in July on adjusted gross proceeds (AGP) compared to the previous year. The latter was given a huge boost by changes that came into effect early in the month, including higher betting limits, longer casino hours, a freeze on gambling taxes, and the addition of table games.

Greek Isles Changes Hands:

The off-Strip Greek Isles has a new owner after being bought out of foreclosure by Canyon Capital Realty Partners of Los Angeles and Spectrum Group Management of New York. The new owners say they will keep the resort open while they "assess the hotel and casino's future."

JetBlue Ends Deal:

JetBlue has ended its $599 "All You Can Jet" offer early, citing too much demand. The deal for unlimited flight between Sept. 8 and Oct. 8 was to be available until this Friday.

Lotto Fever in Italy:

A European record $204.3 million lottery jackpot is up for grabs in Italy. The SuperEnalotto has been rolling over since January and is now drawing border-jumping players from other countries. The largest lottery jackpot ever was the U.S. Powerball's $365 million in 2006, but Italy's jackpot comes tax-free.

Caliendo Signs With Monte Carlo:

It was announced today that comedian/impressionist Frank Caliendo will be the latest addition to Las Vegas' roster of headlining acts, having signed a 10-year exclusive deal with the Monte Carlo. His new show's due to open Monday, Oct. 12 and tickets start at $59 (plus taxes and fees).

BetOnSports Founder Pleads Guilty:

Gary Kaplan, the founder of BetOnSports, has pled guilty to violations of RICO (the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act enacted in 1970 to fight organized crime) and the Wire Act in a Missouri courtroom. He will face between 41 and 51 months behind bars and pay the United States Government $43.65 million. The U.S. Department of Justice contends that in 2004, BetOnSports had 1,700 employees in Costa Rica alone and nearly one million registered customers, to whom it issued more than 10 million bets that combined for over $1 billion. According to a press release distributed by the Department, "Kaplan’s toll-free telephone lines terminated in Houston or Miami and then were forwarded to Costa Rica by satellite transmitter or fiber-optic cable. Some of Kaplan’s Web servers were located in Miami and were remotely controlled from Costa Rica." He was arrested in March of 2007 and sentencing will take place on October 27th. He has been held without bond by U.S. authorities ever since.

Top Chef: Las Vegas:

Season six of Bravo's chef-challenge reality show kicks off tonight at 9 p.m. and this time around Las Vegas is the backdrop. The series, for which the new M Resort served as as the official production location, will feature 17 "Chef'testants," including two brothers, plus a cast of celebrities from the worlds of entertainment and the culinary arts, including Wolfgang Puck, Todd English, Natalie Portman, Daniel Boulud, Penn & Teller, Hubert Keller, Laurent Tourondel, Tim Love, Michelle Bernstein, Tyler Florence, Charlie Palmer, Paul Bartolotta, Nigella Lawson, and Jerome Bocuse.

DE Sports Betting:

Another article on impending sports betting in Delaware appears on the front page of the "Sports" section in today's USA Today. The article is predominantly about the legal status of the initiative, but there's an interesting statistic stating that sports bettors in the region are 90% males in their mid-30s.

Booking Bolt:

While scientists debate how fast super-sprinter Usain Bolt can go, bookmakers have put a price on it. After shattering the world 100-meter record with a 9.58 performance last week, a researcher from the Netherlands put a lower boundary on the limit of human speed at 9.51. Ladbrokes, meanwhile, put out a prop with odds of 3-1 against Bolt running below 9.5 before October 1. The low odds indicate that this is likely a one-way line (you can't bet that he won't succeed), making it a sucker bet in light of the evidence against it happening.

Privé Reprieve?:

It's been reported that Privé nightclub and the Living Room ultralounge at Planet Hollywood could be back in action again as soon as this week, following the replacement of management and key employees. The two nightspots were recently stripped of their liquor licenses, forcing them to close, amidst reports of underage patrons, sexual misconduct, drug abuse, and other violations.

Shaq is Back:

Shaquille O'Neal is back in town -- this time to take on retired boxer Oscar De La Hoya. The two are currently holding a press conference at Planet Hollywood ahead of their fight tonight, which is being filmed for ABC's new reality show, "Shaq Vs.," in which the basketball giant will take on other pro atheletes -- including Serena Williams and Misty May Treanor -- at their own game. The show premieres tonight at 9 p.m.

Vegas Food in New York Post:

On the eve of the of the new season of Bravo's "Top Chef," which is set in Las Vegas, the Post today lists its favorite Vegas eateries in a featured titled, How to Win at the Tables. Looks like they did their homework and two lesser-known LVA favorites -- Sake House Ichiza and Raku -- are both on the list.

WSOP and ESPN:

According to Fox Business, Harrah’s and ESPN have renewed their television contract for the World Series of Poker for seven years. Since the current contract runs out after next year’s WSOP, ESPN will broadcast the tournament through 2018. The WSOP, reportedly, drew 1.13 million viewers in 2008, up 15% from 2007, though so far this year after three weeks of coverage, ESPN’s ratings are down 8%.

Comedian Suing Excalbur Eatery:

As reported in today's Las Vegas Sun, larger-than-life funnyman Louie Anderson is apparently suing Excalbur over a slip-and-fall incident that took place in the food court. The comedian claims he sustained injuried causing "great pain" when slipped on a spilled "foreign substance" (never heard Chinese food called that before) outside Manchu WOK. The lawsuit is between Anderson and the restaurant -- Excalibur and MGM Mirage are not involved.

Wynns' Big Selloff:

As just reported by Channel 8 News, Steve and Elaine Wynn have sold two million shares of stock in Wynn Resorts (traded on NASDAQ). With an average price of $57 a share, the Wynns cashed out $114 million, minus costs. The shares, reportedly sold to provide liquidity for the Wynn's pending divorce, amount to 10 percent of their total holdings. Wow -- the divorce lawyers must be rubbing their hands right now.

Time Magazine Cover Story:

It's Las Vegas. But it's also a far cry from the glowing coverage of a few years back. The story in the August 24 issue, titled "Less Vegas," concentrates on the many economic problems that have plagued the city over the past two years.

Live Talent Coming to Vegas:

FremantleMedia Enterprises has announced that they will be bringing a live version of their NBC show "America's Got Talent Live" to Planet Hollywood this fall. "America's Got Talent Live" will kick off its 10-week run on October 7, 2009 at Planet Hollywood's 1300-seat CHI Showroom in Las Vegas with shows every Wednesday through Sunday. Clarification on Gambling Age:

We've had some inquiries about the Sunday "Today's News" piece about the Ohio gambling age. We neglected to clarify that we were referring to non-Native American operations. Indeed, the minimum gambling age at many tribal-owned casinos is 18.

Big Dog's Burgers:

There are only three weeks left to enjoy Big Dog's 2-for-1 $7.75 Monday night burger deal. As we wrote in the current issue of the LVA newsletter, it's a tasty half-pound cheeseburget served with a choice of fries, slaw, cottage cheese, or potato salad and is served from 3 to 10 p.m. Promotion ends August 31.

Tiger Trap:

Tiger Woods was lined as a -360 favorite at the LV Hilton going into the final round of the PGA Championship, meaning that "chalk" (favorite) bettors took a bath when he failed to win this weekend. Winner Y.E. Yang was listed in the area of +12500 (125-1) going into the tournament. Yang understated his chances just a bit, reportedly commenting before the final day, "Tiger has won seventy championships and I've won one. I guess that makes me a seventy-to-one underdog."

Ohio Considers Gambling Age:

Proposed rules by the Ohio Lottery Commission would allow 18-year-olds to gamble at racinos. The legal age for purchasing lottery tickets in Ohio is already 18, but this would be only the third state to allow casino gambling under 21; the other two are New York and Rhode Island.

Sisters Kourtney and Khloe host today’s party at MGM Grand’s party pool in to celebrate the premier of their new E! reality show, "Kourtney & Khloe Take Miami."

Colonial Bank Collapsing:

According to Channel 8 Eyewitness News, the bank, which has several Las Vegas branches, could soon be the next to fail and is reported as being on the brink of collapse. It's also under a federal criminal investigation over its accounting processes relating to thousands of mortgages worth more than $1 billion and is simultaneously being sued by Bank of America over a $1 billion dispute tied to the Taylor, Bean and Whitaker mortgage company, which recently closed its doors.

Las Vegas appears on yet another "best places" list in today's USA Today. This one is "10 Great Places to Eye the Tigers, More," where the Mirage is listed with the likes of South Africa, Namibia, and Northern India for offering "one of the best displays of white lions on the planet."

Venetian/Palazzo World's Largest Hotel:

Hotels.com just released a list of record-breaking hotels, which includes Las Vegas' Venetian and Palazzo (they operate under the same license) as the "world's largest hotel" based on the number of rooms -- 8,108 combined.

The Las Vegas episode of Food Network's "Chefs vs City" is tonight, with two MGM Grand maestros -- executive chef Stephen Hopcraft and executive pastry chef Santanna Salas from Seablue -- going head to head. The show airs at 8 p.m. and midnight.

Shrimpy Adjustment:

There's a new wrinkle in the Golden Gate's deal for getting its excellent shrimp cocktail at the (old) 99-cent price. Whereas you used to be able to get that price (it's normally $1.99) simply by showing a GG slot card, you now must earn a minimum of one point on the card to get the deal. What does that mean? Not much. It's a one-time requirement and $1 earns 1 point. So you simply have to insert your card and play a dollar to qualify for the discount ongoing.

Cirque du Kiss?:

Say it ain't so! There's real talk of a new Cirque du Soleil show built around the rock band Kiss. "Kiss -- Carnival of Souls" would be a $40 million to $50 million production and seek a venue in Las Vegas according to reports. However, no timetables or other specifics were revealed.

Trump Thwarted?:

Bondholders are asking a bankruptcy court judge to block Donald Trump's $100 million bid to buy back his Atlantic City properties and instead accept their their offer of $175 million, plus $75 million from the sale of Trump Marina Hotel Casino. The Donald currently has no stake in the east coast properties that bear his name, since resigning as chairman of the board of Trump Entertainment shortly before the company filed for bankruptcy last February. If he prevails, the bondholders stand to lose their $1.25 billion investment.

Chippendales Go Latin!:

Now through September 3, the popular Chippendales male revue at the Rio is adding a new 10:30 p.m. "Noche Latina Thursdays" show, featuring a Spanish-speaking MC, Spanish versions of featured songs, and Spanish music replacing certain acts.

Helicopter Update:

Apparently, the pilots of the Metro helicopter reported a mechanical problem and were forced to land at the intersection of DI and Jones. No injuries occurred. The incident, it now transpires, took place at Lindell and Cherokee and a Metro eye witness is quoted as saying, "They were free falling without any power. I don't know how they landed it." Emergency Helo Landing:

In a breaking story from Channel 8 LasVegasNOW, Metro's helicopter just made an emergency landing at Desert Inn and Jones, so expect bad traffic in that area. We'll keep you posted of developments. (What is it with planes and helicopters lately? Hudson River crash, emergency landing at McCarran for Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher last week...)

Vegas Stars in Man v. Food Tonight:

Or, to be more precise, two Las Vegas monster meals star in Adam Richman's Travel Channel Show. The Nascar Cafe at the Sahara will be screening the program, which features their six-pound "Bomb Burrito," at 7 p.m., while Hash House A Go Go (6800 W Sahara Ave) is hosting a full-on viewing party from 9 p.m. (second airing of the show's at 10 p.m.) to celebrate their monster burger's 15 minutes of fame. They've teamed up with Mix 94.1 and Jack FM and there will be happy hour prices on drinks ($2 domestic 20-ounce drafts, $3 imported beers and well drinks) and complimentary appetizers, plus the first 50 people to arrive get their first drink on the house.

But Doom and Gloom are Relative:

Sure, during January through June 2009, 18.1 million travelers visited Las Vegas, down 6.9% from the 19.5 million of 2008’s first six months. But that still adds up to more than three million a month, on a pace to break 36 million for the year. And yeah, the occupancy rate for January through June 2009 was 82.7%, down from 86% last year (itself down from 90.4% in 2007). But with the national occupancy rate at roughly 55%, Las Vegas looks pretty good by comparison. Better yet (for us), room rates are down nearly 27% this year over last. All in all, people are still flocking to Las Vegas to take advantage of the bargain room prices and high (for Vegas) vacancy rate.

Esquire magazine has conducted a survey of some of the nation's "celebrity" chefs, asking them to pick their favorite fast food joint. In-N-Out Burger was the outright winner and the choice of several of Las Vegas' chefs, including Thomas Keller, Paul Bartolotta, and Charlie Palmer ("Whatever's in that sauce is tasty"). Visitors, Too:

Visitor volume also took a hit in June, as the Las Vegas tourist count tumbled 6.3%. This makes 13th consecutive months of declines and brings the year-to-date drop to 6.8%.

More Bad Numbers:

There's no relief. Just-reported gambling-win figures for June show a 13.8% decline statewide and a 14.8% drop on the Strip. Nevada casinos won $818.2 million, the lowest monthly total since July 2004.

Hard Times for Hard Rock:

Morgans Hotel Group, joint owners of the Hard Rock Las Vegas, report that the hotel-casino's earnings fell from $3.927 million in 2008's second quarter to $1.423 million this year. Citing reduced occupancy and the same pressure hotels citywide are feeling to counter decreased visitation with lower room rates, the company nethertheless retains an upbeat attidude towards the future of its recently expanded Las Vegas property: "The Hard Rock hotel and casino in Las Vegas with its exciting new venues -- while down year-over-year -- is outperforming its peers on the Las Vegas Strip," said Chief Executive Fred Kleisner during a conference call for investors and analysts.

Down Down Down:

Fiscal 2009 numbers are in for Nevada. Statewide, the gaming win registered a decline of 13.7% between July 2008 and June 2009, down to $10.7 billion; it’s the largest percentage decline in Nevada history and it comes on top of a 1.9% drop in fiscal 2008. In Las Vegas, the Strip win plummeted 14.7% in June, the 18th straight month it’s dropped; for fiscal 2009, the Strip win was down 15.2% to $5.6 billion, coming off a 1.5% drop in 2008. It’s the lowest win in the past four years. The smallest fiscal-year drop was in North Las Vegas (2.9%), the highest in Mesquite (18.9%). Blackjack was off just under 15%, craps 17.9%, baccarat 14.8%, and the sports books a whopping 34.6%.

Abrupt Exit for Pizza Chain:

All six of the Peter Piper Pizza chain franchises in the Vegas valley have closed, effective immediately. The chain had been operating in southern Nevada for two decades but the local franchisee opted to close all the Las Vegas locations this week, "due to the challenging retail environment in [this] market," said a spokesman for the parent compan. Sorry, kids.

New Gig for Purple Reign:

It's just been announced that popular Prince (& The Revolution) tribute act Purple Reign will be opening in the showroom at Hooters on September 4. Shows will be every Fri. & Sat. at 11 p.m. and tickets will be priced at $19.99. Since you can still catch them on Sundays at House of Blues for $10 (with a $5-off coupon available on the band's site). However, if you have an LVA MRB Coupon Book and haven't yet used your Hooters coupon, you'll be able to get up to two free tickets to the show for a cost of drink each ($7.95 per person, plus applicable taxes).

DEA Raids Vegas Pharmacy:

Applied Pharmacy Services located on Flamingo Road and Jones Blvd. was raided by the DEA this morning, apparently in connection with the investigation into Michael Jackson's death. No further details are available as yet, but we'll keep you posted.

First the "Great BBQ Massacre" (see this column Aug. 4) and now the "Great Comedy Club Cull." Our recent update of comedy-club venues around town revealed bad news for aspiring comics or people in search of cheap laughs: Boomer's Humors, Open Mic at Elev8 Hookah Lounge, Combat Comedy at AJ's Tavern, and Mike P Presents 'Deez Nuts' Comedy Jam at Poetry (closed) have all bitten the dust. Funniez Comedy Club at Buffalo Bill's (Fri./Sat. 10 p.m.) is the only comedy club left standing, outside of the bigger Strip/off-Strip comedy shows. French Food in Vegas:

Las Vegas scored a spot in last Friday's USA Today list of "10 Great Places to Master Art of French Eating," with Joel Robuchon at MGM Grand getting the nod. But three others on the roster also have Las Vegas representation -- Bouchon (Venetian), Fleur de Lys (MBay), and Daniel (as Daniel Boulud Brasserie at the Wynn).

Bally's Book Back in Action:

The race and sports book at Bally's Las Vegas, which has been closed since April 1, will reopen August 26, just in time for football season. The remodeled book features an exclusive VIP viewing area with hi def screens, couches, sports memorabilia, specialty cocktails, and beer buckets. The launch will feature celebrity appearances by well-known sports figures, "text-to-win" promotions, and drink specials.

Casting Call for New Tan Shop:

Spray Tan Las Vegas will be holding an open casting call on Wednesday, August 12 from 5-10 p.m. at Lavo (Palazzo) and from 1-3 p.m. on Friday, August 14 at TAO Beach (Venetian). The local rock magazine is celebrating its fifth birthday this Thursday with an event at the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign. From 3-4:30 p.m. they will attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records record for the most guitarists playing "Viva Las Vegas" in one spot. Elvis impersonators and performers will also be on hand. (After the recent graffiti and suicide incidents, it's a nice change to have the sign in the news with a good story.)

Casinos Open in MI and PA:

In Michigan, the FireKeepers Casino opened near Battle Creek last Wednesday. The 107,000 square-foot casino with 2,680 slot machines, 78 table games, a 120-seat poker room, and a bingo hall is owned by the Potawatomi Indians. In Pennsylvania, the Rivers Casino opened Sunday in Pittsburgh. The casino has 3,000 machines offering slots, video poker, blackjack, roulette, and 3 Card Poker.

Classic Vegas Diner Returns:

If you're not familiar with the Huntridge Drug Restaurant (known colloquially as the Huntridge Diner), it's a classic and authentic old-school '50s drugstore diner on the east side of town (1122 E Charleston Blvd.). It closed back in October of last year but we've just discovered it's reopened for business and scouting for customers. If you're any kind of a vintage fan, it's definitely worth your support, plus reports we've read praise the food for its quality and value. State Taxes from Gambling Down:

It's no big surprise, but according to specific statistics from the American Gaming Association, taxes collected from commercial casinos by state governments in fiscal 2009 weren’t so hot; on average, they were down 2.2%, to $5.7 billion. Illinois sustained the largest drop in fiscal 2009 over 2008: nearly 24%. Nevada's gambling taxes dropped by 15%, which contributed to a drop of 10% in the state's overall revenue. New Jersey fell by 14.1%, Colorado by 12.3%, and Mississippi by nearly 10%. Pennsylvania, Maine, and Oklahoma were up by double digits.

Binion's Lease Dispute:

What began as a fairly quiet dispute at Binion's is escalating. For many years (and even during the Binion's Horseshoe glory days), the land beneath Binion's has been leased. When the current owners, TLC Casino Enterprises, withheld payments in an attempt to re-negotiate the land-lease deal, it pulled former owners, MTR Gaming Group, back into the picture. Since MTR had guaranteed the lease as part of the $32 million sale of the casino, it made the interim payments, but is now intiating a lawsuit against TLC to recover them.

Public Backs Dog:

In tonight's big UFC card, the public is getting behind Forrest Griffin against heavy favorite Anderson Silva. Griffin has dropped from a +300 underdog to +240, indicating betting interest on his side. In tonight's other marquee match, BJ Penn has held steady at about a 2-1 favorite over Kenny Florian.

Sports Book Pooling Approved:

The Gaming Control Board has approved South Point owner Michael Gaughan's plan to join forces with other casino sports books in order to be able to handle heavier action. The former Coast Casinos owner had successfully operated those properties' sports books this way in the past and currently runs a pool consisting of South Point, the El Cortez, and the Casablanca and Virgin River properties in Mesquite. The new agreement will add the books at the Palms, both Cannery casinos, and the Rampart into the mix and initially is being undertaken as a one-year experiment. South Point is one of the three Las Vegas race and sports books that we recommend via our new LVASports service, so this should be a positive development.

No More NCAA for Nevada:

The NCAA will no longer hold championship tournaments in states such as Nevada that permit betting on single games (the ban excludes states that allow parlay betting, lottery tickets, pull tabs, and sports pools). Chancellors and presidents from all three NCAA divisions approved the measure Thursday, saying it applies to "any session of an NCAA championship." University of Nevada Athletic Director Cary Groth called the decision "outrageous".

Stanley Ho's Condition Unknown:

The ailing 87-year-old Macau casino tycoon apparently underwent brain surgery to remove a blood clot earlier this week and since then there has been no official word of his progress. Openly polygamous, Ho has 17 children and insiders say he has yet to name a successor to take over his gambling empire. Casinos affiliated with the Ho family control over half of Macau's US$14 billion gaming revenues, making it the largest gambling market in the world.

Mob Discussion Tonight:

Former Las Vegas mobster Frank Cullotta (the subject and co-author of Huntington Press' eponymous biography will be part of a roundtable discussion at 6 p.m. this evening at the Clark County Government Center Commission Chambers. Titled, "The Mob & Las Vegas: Centennial Stories: Examining Our Past," the discussion and Q&A session is free to attend and will also feature retired FBI Special Agent Dennis Arnoldy, KLAS TV Channel 8 investigative reporter George Knapp, Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist John L. Smith, and Kent Clifford, Commander of Metro's Intelligence Bureau, 1979-1983. The discussion also will be aired live on Clark County Television (CCTV) cable Channel 4 and replayed throughout August.

Big Sign Approved:

The Las Vegas City Council has approved an earlier-announced plan for a casino and 98-foot sign at the corner of the Strip and Sahara Avenue (former site of the Holy Cow!). Plans call for a 9,000-square-foot casino with restaurants and retail space, but no hotel. The height of the sign has been scaled down from its originally proposed 500 feet. The expected completion date is late 2010.

Rio and Riv Deny ATM Hacks:

We reported earlier this week how attendees at the DefCon security convention in Las Vegas had apparently seen and been the victims of "rigged" or bogus ATM machines at the Riviera and the Rio. Both properties have now issued statements denying any security compromises and saying in one instance (the Riviera) that they'd deliberately emptied and disabled the machine (presumably because they feared being hacked themselves by conference attendees) and in the other that those who'd experienced having their card debited without cash being dispensed were perhaps simply unfortunate victims of "cash dispense errors." If you were one of those victims, call Global Cash Access' (the owner of the machines) customer service department on 800/644-0439.

Silver Dollar Closes:

The Carson City casino that went through an expansion program only last year has closed abruptly. The property, purchased in April by Northern Nevada Comstock Investments, is now fenced off from the public.

Party On, Garth:

Brooks, that is. Today's LV Review-Journal reports that Garth Brooks has signed a 16-week headliner deal with Encore that will begin in October. This deal has been rumored for a couple months and was expected, but Encore continues to deny that it's set.

Boyd Banters:

In comments following its second-quarter earnings filing, Boyd Gaming Corp. indicated that it's still interested in acquiring some of the assets of Station Casinos, which recently filed for bankruptcy. Station immediately responded that it has no interest in selling. Boyd also said that it's continuing to evaluate its halted Echelon Place, and is not seeking a buyer for the project.

Sports Betting Advances in DE:

A high-ranking judge has denied a request by the major pro sports leagues and the NCAA for a preliminary injunction against the state of Delaware and its plans to institute sports betting. The denial is considered a major step toward making betting a reality, possibly in place by the start of this year's NFL season.

Terry Fator Returns to Roots:

The popular Strip entertainer, who rose to fame via winning the 2007 season of "America's Got Talent," will return to the show as a guest tonight. It airs on NBC at 9 p.m. You can catch the Terry Fator show at the Mirage Tuesday through Saturday at the Mirage.

Post Offices Saved:

It's hard enough already trying to mail a letter or postcard in this town, so we weren't happy to hear about the impending closure of five of the city's post offices, as announced last month. The good news is, following discussions between the Postmaster General and Sen. Harry Reid, four of the five will remain open. We don't know which the unlucky one is yet.

New Sip & Spa Deal at the Rio:

From August 13, the spa at the Rio is implementing a Thursday happy hour for ladies, with cocktail and treatment packages at discounted prices, plus drink coupons for the iBar and free admission to the VooDoo lounge. Relax and unwind from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with options like the Mojito and zesty lime mani/pedi for $80 or the Glass of Vino and 50-minute, deep-cleansing facial for $85. Big Slap on the Wrist for A.C. Hilton:

This morning New Jersey gaming regulators imposed a $115,000 fine on the Atlantic City Hilton for allowing a 19-year-old to gamble. It was the second-largest fine for underage gambling in the city's 31-year history of casino gaming, following Bally's $157,500 penalty for the same offence last November.

South Point to Host Jerry Lewis Telethon:

For the fourth consecutive year, South Point will host the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, which will be broadast from 9 p.m. EST on Sunday, Sept. 6 until 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 7 on 180 television stations throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Suicide at the Sign:

The "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign is currently out of bounds while Metro investigates what they are ruling a suicide in the new parking lot area. An off-duty officer noticed a man slumped over the steering wheel of a car parked near the attraction around 5:30 a.m. this morning; upon closer inspection he was found to be dead from a gunshot wound that appears to have been self-inflicted.

Feelgood's Opens:

It's a few months past schedule, but Dr. Feelgood's has finally opened on W. Sahara. The restaurant-nightclub is owned by Motley Cru frontman Vince Neil and is named for one of the band's biggest hits. The original is in West Palm Beach, Florida.

CityCenter's CNG Limos:

CityCenter’s fleet of 26 stretch-limo Lincoln Town Cars will use clean-burning compressed natural gas (CNG) as fuel. According to CityCenter, this will be the world’s first fleet of stretch limos powered by CNG, which was selected due to its abundant U.S. reserves and its cost efficiencies compared to gasoline and diesel. In addition, CNG vehicles produce 35%-60% less harmful emissions, 90%-97% less particulate matter, and 25% less carbon dioxide. CityCenter will begin opening on December 1 (Vdara); the Crystals mall will open on Dec. 3, Mandarin Oriental on Dec. 4, ARIA on Dec. 16, and Veer in early January.

A Bronx Tale Coming to Vegas:

Academy Award-nominated actor Chazz Palminteri will be bringing his critically acclaimed one-man show, A Bronx Tale, to The Venetian Showroom for a limited engagement October 7-18. Tickets are priced at $46, $66 and $86 (plus taxes and fees) and go on sale tomorrow, Wednesday, August 5 at 10 a.m.

The Great BBQ Massacre:

While we heard hot dogs proclaimed the "recession food" awhile back, barbeque does not seem to be faring so well in the current economic climate. Our recent update to Las Vegas' BBQ listings revealed several casualties, including Salt Lick at Santa Fe (now Stoney's North Forty), BBQ Shak (now online only, which also means a WiFi hotspot bit the dust), Adam's Ribs (from the owner of Freakin' Frog), and Barbeque Masters (both locations are now closed -- we'd wondered how long the Decatur venue would survive with a name like Barbeque Masters once the kitchen had closed. This casualty knocked out an MRB coupon, too.) Still, good news for BBQ lovers is that some new joints have opened (or come to our attention), including P-Dubs, Sassy Sal's Vegas Style BBQ, Harry O's, and Outlaws Backyard BBQ & Chili, all of which you can find in "Buffets & Dining" -- just select "BBQ" from the drop-down menu in "All Restaurants."

Another Celebrity Poker Tourney:

Following the success of the Ante Up for Africa WSOP event comes the second annual "Operation All In" celebrity poker tournament in support of the Xtreme Couture G.I. Foundation. The downtown property's ongoing expansion and upgrade continues with news that it's taking reservations for the new Rush Tower, due to open November 20. Bogus ATM Alert:

It's been reported that the U.S. Secret Service is investigating a group of ATM machines in various casinos that are debiting people's accounts without dispensing any cash. Ironically, Chris Paget, presenter of the DefCon hacker/security expert conference, which was in town last week, was a victim of a rigged machine at the Rio (as were several others), while earlier a fake ATM was discovered on the casino floor at the Riviera, just outside the security room but out of sight of surveillance cameras. August Deals at South Point:

Here are some good deals that are confirmed. On Fridays in August, all drinks at all bars are $1 from 4 to 10 p.m.; Saturdays are double-points days in the casino; and Mondays through Thursdays you can earn buffets with low point accumulations.

Monster Month-Long Dining Deal:

August was supposed to kick off one of the best dining deals we've ever seen. Station Casinos is offering 2-for-1 entrees in all Station and Fiesta restaurants, excluding buffets and coffee shops (and Hachi at Red Rock), Sundays-Thursdays until September 3. We say "supposed to," because we've seen no outside promotion of this deal. You should call ahead to confirm, but assuming it's on, it's a great opportunity to try some excellent restaurants on the cheap. Must show a Boarding Pass or Amigo Card.

Today's LV Review-Journal contains another report on the sorry state of the Las Vegas condominium market. This article offers lots of data and insight. At its peak, 75 high-rise towers and 47,500 luxury units were planned. Fewer than 25% of them materialized.

New Hard Rock to Open:

The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa officially opens tomorrow, August 3 at 1:30 p.m. Solely owned by the Cherokee Nation, this brings the total count to seven Hard Rock casinos globally. The new resort features 350 luxury rooms; more than 125,000-square-feet of gaming space; five dining venues including Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill (he’ll be there for the opening) ; five nightclubs and a 2,500-seat event center scheduled to open in 2010.

Face the Ace Debuts:

The new poker show Face the Ace debuts tonight on NBC at 9 p.m. As we understand it, ordinary poker Joes take on the game's All Stars. Sounds fun.

First Football Contest:

The Palms is first out of the gate, opening registration for its Pigskin Payoff contest today. Entries are $25, but if you buy three, you get three more free. Also, if you sign up by September 3, you get $10 in slot free-play. Taking advantage of all the givebacks, it works out to six entries for $65, or $10.83 per entry.

PHo Denied Privé Control:

An attempt by Planet Hollywood to take control of (and use its liquor license at) the shuttered Privé nightclub was rebuffed. County officials denied the request, ensuring that the club will remain closed, at least through the weekend.

Condo News:

Today's LV Review-Journal contains two stories on Las Vegas condominium woes. CityCenter is apparently repricing units (and assisting on financing) to appease previous buyers disgruntled about the prices they originally paid. And downtown's Streamline Tower continues to struggle with less than 25% of its units sold. The artcile says the property's value has dropped from $205 million to about $35 million.

Swing City Dolls on East Side:

The all-girl ‘40s, ‘50s, and ‘60s tribute band will be performing the second of their free shows in Marilyn’s Lounge at the Eastside Cannery from 8 p.m.-midnight tonight.

Meet a Footwear Maestro:

Shoe designer Steve Madden footwear will be at Nordstrum in the Fashion Show Mall today from 2-3:30 p.m. (signing shoes?!)
