Harrah's Moves on Planet Ho:

It's official: As long suspected would happen, Harrah's Entertainment Inc. has filed an application to purchase Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, the Nevada Gaming Control Board confirmed today. Harrah's has formed a new subsidiary, PHW Las Vegas LLC, with the intent of taking over the property; the company already owns a substantial chunk of Planet Hollywood's $860 million debt. If the takeover bid is successful -- and CEO Robert Earl has welcomed the move -- it would give Harrah's control of all 126 acres on the east side of the Strip between Flamingo Road and Harmon Avenue.

Stewie Awards Live from Vegas:

Two-time NASCAR champ Tony Stewart, along with Matt Yoakam and Robin Leach, will be presenting the annual "Stewie Awards" live from the Rio exclusively on Sirius XM Radio this Thursday, Dec. 3 from 7-9 p.m. The awards honor the best, boldest, and funniest moments of the 2009 NASCAR season and celebrity guests slated to attend include Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch, Denny Hamlin, Greg Biffle, Juan Pablo Montoya, Ryan Newman, Kasey Kahne, Carl Edwards and Brian Vickers. The event will take place on the Masquerade Village stage and is open and free to the public to attend.

Dubious News for Adelson:

Within minutes of the opening bell on the floor of the Hong Kong stock exchange and the Sands China $2.5 billion IPO, shares had dropped by 15%. By the end of trading today, the stock closed 10.2% below its offering price of $1.34 per share, with investors evidently remaining wary of gaming tycoon Sheldon Adelson's ambitious plans for his Macau properties.

Binion's to Close:

It's just been reported by Channel 8 News that Binion's is to close December 14th. Apparently, a spokesperson with the iconic downtown property has confirmed that the hotel rooms, Original Coffeeshop, and keno lounge will be closing on December 14th. The casino portion of Binion's and associated restaurants will remain open. We understand the closings will result in the layoff of around 100 people.

The Buffet at CityCenter:

Yes, there will be a buffet at CityCenter. The single offering will be "The Buffet" at Aria, with opening prices are set at $14.95 for breakfast, $19.95 for lunch, $27.95/$34.95 for dinner, and $23.95/$28.95 for brunch.

Sirens on Hiatus:

The Siren's of TI pirate show is dark, and will remain so throughout most of December for maintenance. The show is scheduled to resume on Dec. 26.

Sammy Shows:

Sammy Hagar recently showed up unnanounced and played an impromptu concert at his just-opened Cabo Wabo Cantina at Planet Hollywood. The concert was broadcast live on the casino's giant outside LED screen. The official grand opening is Dec. 4.

Party Break in Reno?:

The Reno police chief has asked 15 bars on the west side of town to self-impose a two-hour closing, from 4 to 6 am daily. Apparently there've been many complaints from nearby residents about early-morning noise. Most of the bars have voluntarily complied.

Lucky's Carryover:

The Lucky's football contest is in its third week of carryovers, which means the jackpot is $24,000 for getting a perfect ticket. The contest is free to enter, but you must sign up by 9 am today at the Plaza, Terrible's, or the sports books in Primm.

National Tree on Hallmark:

Seasonal Huntington Press novel The National Tree by author David Kranes has been made into a Hallmark Channel original movie starring Andrew McCarthy, Kari Matchett, and Evan Williams and debuts tonight at 8 p.m. PT (7 p.m. CT). If you miss the early showing, it airs again at 10 p.m. Click here for more details.

Online Reg Delayed:

U.S. financial institutions have been given an additional six months to comply with regulations mandated by the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. Prohibitions on processing payments from credit cards and online transfers involving gambling sites was scheduled to go into effect this week. The delay is viewed as a step toward eventually overturning the law.

New Buffet All-Dayer:

The Emperor's Buffet at Imperial Palace is now offering an all-day pass for $25. Brunch (reg. $12.99) is served from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. and dinner ($18.99) from 4 p.m.-9 p.m.

NASCAR Star at HTZ:

NASCAR sensation Erik Darnell #96 will be hosting at Hawaiian Tropic Zone today. Free drinks for ladies midnight to 2 a.m.

Peter Max Signing:

The pop-culture artist is in town today at his Forum Shops gallery from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. to show off his new collection of acrylic-on-canvas paintings of the masters of expressionism. Rembrandt, da Vinci, Van Gogh and Picasso are among the subjects on display and for sale. The 16-by-14 pieces are priced at $22,000 apiece. Interestingly, in a recent phone interview with Las Vegas Sun writer John Katsilometes, Max expressed dismay at the demise of the Las Vegas Art Museum, which was a victim to the current economic malaise, and offered to step in to help out: ""I would have pulled a few million dollars worth of art for free, to help the museum. I would help re-open it in a heartbeat." Watch this space to see if anything comes of the goodwill.

Tree Lighting This Evening:

The District at Green Valley Ranch holds its annual tree-lighting ceremony at 5 p.m. this evening. Santa Claus will be on hand for the event, which will feature live holiday music, strolling characters, and gifts for kids.

NY-NY in USA Today:

Today's USA Today list of "10 Great Places to Forge Fun" includes New York-New York's Bar at Times Square. The list is a compilation of nightlife spots that invite patrons to "create their [own] fun." The BATS is included for its nightly dueling pianos.

Ten Times at Tuscany:

Get 10X points all day today at Tuscany. This deal is being extended to all Wednesdays and Fridays through the end of the year.

Coast Connection Today:

Coast Casinos' Coast Connection magazine is bundled in today's LV Review-Journal. This edition contains a $20 matchplay at Sam's Town and a $10 matchplay at the Orleans. Plus there's lots of good information about holiday schedules and specials at the Coasts, including an 10-ounce cowboy steak special for $11.99 in the Orleans coffee shop and $3 shots at all bars during NFR.

Rose on Hold:

The opening date for MBay's The Rose: A Burlesque Cocktail Room appears to be up in the air. While we're still told that the opening will be in December, a firm date has not been set. The Rose will be located in the space that housed Forty Deuce.

AC/DC Rescheduled:

The postponed Oct. 3 concert by the Aussie rockers at the MGM Grand has now been rescheduled for Friday, April 9, 2010. All previously purchased tickets will be honored.

Weekend Highlights:

Service Comp:

Good until Nov. 30, all military, fire department, law enforcement, and school district personnel get complimentary entry into N9NE Group nightclubs. That includes Rain, Moon, ghostbar, and Playboy Club. The same offer will be extended to locals in December.

CityCenter First Look:

Anthony Curtis took a pre-opening tour of CityCenter last week and came back impressed? "Amazing," says Anthony. "If it wasn't for the economy, this place might have completely steamrolled Las Vegas."

Harrah's Moves on Planet:

Harrah's CEO Gary Lovman has confirmed that Harrah's hopes to acquire Planet Hollywood and has been purchasing Planet debt toward that end. Owning Planet Hollywood would give Harrah's control of all 126 acres on the east side of the Strip between Flamingo and Harmon, as well as it's substantial holdings north of Flamingo.

Happy Thanksgiving:

You shouldn't have a problem finding a good turkey dinner today, as almost every casino has a special going. If you're playing, Coast casinos are awarding 7X slots and 5X video poker points all day.

HHAGG Coming to the Strip:

Next Tuesday Hash House A Go Go, the home of "twisted farm food" in huge portions located at 6800 W. Sahara, will announce plans for its first location on the Strip. Stay tuned...

New Tiger Cubs:

Siegfried & Roy's "Secret Garden" at the Mirage has announced the birth of two new white tiger cubs. They're currently available to view weekdays 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. weekends and holidays. Admission's $15 for adults and $10 for children aged 4-12.

Christmas Comes to Pahrump:

From today through Tuesday, Dec. 15 the Pahrump Nugget is holding its 7th Annual Christmas Tree Decorating Contest. Guests are invited to add a decoration to the casino's "Player's Tree" for a chance to win $25 cash. The Nugget will choose 10 winners on Friday, Dec. 18 at 2:30 p.m.

Even Foxwoods Not Immune:

Connecticut's monster casino -- the second-largest in the world behind Mohegan Sun -- is warning that it can't make a full interest payment due last week on a $500 million note.

Congrats to Donny:

Donny Osmond, who's currently performing alongside his sister at the Flamingo in Donny & Marie, beat out co-finalists Kelly Osbourne and Mya to win ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" last night. Marie took part in the show last season and finished third. At fifty-one, Donny's the oldest winner on the show to date.

CityCenter in USA Today:

The cover story in the "Money" section of today's USA Today is titled "CityCenter Complex Bets Big on Las Vegas Strip." It's a big story with lots of new information. Anthony Curtis is quoted assessing the project's prospects. Get the full scoop at LVA in the Media.

New Coffeehouse at Hard Rock:

Espumoso Caffé has just opened at the Hard Rock. Apparently, it's a "Latin-infused coffeehouse" and specializes in assorted Illy-branded Italian coffees and espresso drinks, loose leaf teas, freshly blended smoothies, European pastries, South American empanadas, Italian paninis, and gelato.

Rock 'n Roll Marathon:

The annual Las Vegas Marathon and 1/2 Marathon has new organizers and is now part of the national Rock 'n Roll Marathon Series. This year's event takes place Dec. 6 (so it's probably too late to start training, if you're not already) and will kick off with a Pasta Party ($35 in advance) at Mandalay Bay on Dec. 5 to fuel the runners. There will be live entertainment from Donavon Frankenreiter and the Sin City Sinners on the day. Click here to register.

The company that handles our email for QoD etc. suffered a major outage last night, which took them out of action for several hours. It looks like they're now back up and running, but we can see that none of today's QoD emails have been delivered yet. Please accept our apologies -- this one is entirely beyond our control. Calling All Lebowski Fans:

If you're a fan of the movie The Big Lebowski (and, frankly, how could anyone not be?) we have good tidings: PT's at St Rose Pkwy. and Eastern Ave. is holding its second "Lebowski Eve" tomorrow from 6 p.m. until the fun stops. There's a costume contest, with a $100 first prize and a bowling team to the 3rd annual Big Le"bowl"ski on March 8, 2010. Everyone who shows up in costume gets their first Caucasion on the house, with $2 drink specials thereafter, DJ, games, and trivia for prizes.

Downtown Omelet House to Close:

The experiment of placing a new Omelet House in the Plaza proved short-lived, unfortunately. It opened June 29, but will be closing next week. The other two non-casino locations, at 316 N. Boulder Hwy and 2160 W. Charleston will remain open, however.

Regis & Kelly in Vegas:

The duo are hosting their daytime "LIVE!" talkshow from Encore, Las Vegas this week. Steve Wynn was spotted in the audience with his new girlfriend earlier today, while the announcement was also made to day that he and Elain had reached an "amicable settlement" that's rumored (courtesy of "Norm!") could surpass the $1.7 billion Rupert Murdoch paid in 1999.

Alex's Thanksgiving Survival Guide:

Penn Out as Icahn Outbids on Fontainebleau:

Billionaire investor Carl Icahn will be the opening bidder in an auction for the bankrupt Fontainebleau Las Vegas casino-resort after Penn National Gaming Inc. dropped out. Penn, which had been looking for a presence in the Las Vegas market, stopped bidding at $145 million, leaving Icahn Nevada Gaming LLC's so-called stalking-horse offer of $156.5 as the number for others to beat. Fontainebleau's sellers last week asked U.S. Bankruptcy Judge A. Jay Cristol in Miami to auction the casino on Jan. 21.

Strip Traffic Warning:

Beginning at midnight tonight, and running through November 27, the portion of Las Vegas Blvd. Sth. from Harmon Ave. to approximately 1,000 yards south will be closed closed on the southbound side, with all traffic relegated to the northbound lanes. The move is coming into effect to aid with the timely completion of CityCenter and drivers are strongly advised to find an alternate route or expect long delays. So You Think You're Funny?:

If so, now's your chance to find out, courtesy of The Improv at Harrah's. On Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, in conjunction with the Blu-ray Hi-Def and DVD release of Universal Studios' Funny People, Budd Friedman and Mark Lonow's Improv at Harrah's will begin a hunt to find the next funniest person in the country. The winner will be rewarded with a six-night run at the Improv sometime in 2010. To enter, you need to record at least one minute of your funniest original material and upload the video to the dedicated area at ijoke.com (to ensure the video gets placed into the right location, be certain to select "Funny People" in the drop-down category selector). Designated Drivers Program in Peril:

For several years, the Designated Drivers program in Las Vegas has waived its $55 fee through the holidays and offered free rides to revelers, thanks to sponsorship from local businesses. They receive some state funding, but this year they remain $40,000 short of being able to provide this valuable service, which they were hoping to offer from Dec. 19 through Jan. 3. 2,000 letters were mailed to local bars and clubs, asking for donations, but to date not a single response has been received, so the free-ride program currently remaines in jeopardy. Anyone who wishes to donate to the non-profit company should visit designateddriversfoundation.org.

Another One Bites the Dust:

As reported in the Las Vegas Sun, Vegas-based Majestic Star Casino LLC filed for bankruptcy protection today in Delaware after defaulting on debt obligations covering its properties in Colorado, Indiana, and Mississippi. The company is led by Don Barden, who through another company also controls Fitzgeralds in downtown Las Vegas -- that property is not included in today's bankruptcy filings.

Macau Casino Gets Jackson Glove:

It's been revealed that the Ponte 16 gaming resort in Macau, part-owned by controversial Chinese tycoon Stanley Ho, paid $350,000 dollars at auction last Saturday for the famous rhinestone-encrusted glove that Michael Jackson wore when he first performed the famous "moonwalk" on TV in 1983. The five-star hotel will open a gallery early next year to showcase the glove and nine other Jackson items from the auction, including sequined socks and pictures of Charlie Chaplin that the singer drew as a child.

A Death in the Desert:

That's the title of the Investigation Discovery "On the Case" show tonight with Paula Zahn, which focuses on the Ted Binion story, asking: "Was it murder or just an accidental drug overdose?" The show airs at 10 p.m. For more on the Binion murder trial and courtroom drama, check out our Quicksilver title by Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist John L. Smith and photographer Jeff Scheid. Celine Returning?:

We've heard a rumor on the grapevine that Ms. Dion may be returning for a limited engagement at Caesars' Colosseum. Nothing definite yet, but it's the only word so far on who might fill the gap after Bette Midler's depature and during Cher's hiatus. We'll keep you posted.

Table-Games Comp:

Ellis Island is offering a liberal comp for table-game players. Play any table game, regardless of bet size, for an hour and get a comp for an entrée in the café. There's reportedly no limit on how many you can earn.

Mirage Anniversary Today:

It was 20 years ago today that the Mirage opened its doors. It was more than just another opening, the Mirage's debut flipped the switch on the transition from the "old" to the "new" Las Vegas. Anthony Curtis was there on opening day. Following is an excerpt from his recollection of it from the November LVA. "I showed up about 9 p.m. and could hardly find a parking spot. I’m not sure if the parking garage was there yet, but I know there was a much more expansive outside parking area in front that has since been converted into who knows what. I entered through the main doors and pushed through a crowd to the atrium. At that moment I looked up to see a guy in a tuxedo and a guy in jeans and a tank top walking side by side over the bridge. They weren’t together, but they both looked like they felt comfortable in that same space. I remember thinking, "Man, this place was made for everyone!" Indeed it was, and thus began the incredible transformation of Las Vegas."

Air Traffic Off:

Las Vegas air traffic, a key leading indicator for visitation and spending, fell again in October compared to the same month last year. However, similar to last month's result, it was off only slightly at -1.3%.

A Rush to Rush:

The new Rush Tower at the Golden Nugget is reportedly near full for its first weekend, despite a statement from the resort that it would not cut rates, as others are doing. However, an article in today's LV Review-Journal indicates that rates have been cut to under $100 per night, down from an expected opening rate of about $140.

Polar Plunge:

Loew’s Lake Las Vegas hosts a charity event today benefitting the Special Olympics. Sponsored by Halloween Mart, the event consists of a costume contest at noon, after which everyone leaps into the icy waters of Lake Las Vegas. Sponsored "plungers" receive a branded hoodie, access to the official Plunge after-party and the Vino de Lago wine tasting, and a room for the night at Loews Lake Las Vegas Resort. Station Extension:

A bankruptcy court judge has granted Station Casinos an extenstion until Dec. 11 to submit its restructuring plan. The original deadline was scheduled to expire this month. Hearings were also scheduled for Dec. 7 and Dec. 11 to hear arguments on a proposed compromise to lower the lease payments the company's paying itself to lease some properties.

Strip Reopened:

Las Vegas Blvd. South has been reopened to traffic and pedestrians. No word on what the package was, but evidently nothing dangerous.

Strip Closed:

Las Vegas Blvd. Sth. is currently closed from Circus Circus Drive to Convention Center Drive due to a suspicious package outside Slots A Fun. We'll keep you posted.

Magic's a Drag Canceled:

Tonight's performance of Magic's a Drag, the comedy magic drag show starring Cashetta at the Harmon Theater, has been canceled due to illness.

Smell of Vegas:

The "official scent of Las Vegas" is scheduled to be revealed tonight at the SCENTWorld 2009 expo Gala Dinner. Top executives from the Las Vegas business community, the City of Las Vegas, and the Vegas Airport Authority were asked to assist in "capturing everything the city stands for," while the actual creative task was performed by Christophe Laudamiel, the "enfant terrible of contemporary perfumery" whose produced fragrances for Estée Lauder, Ralph Lauren, and Abercrombie & Fitch.

More Awards for CityCenter:

With Gold LEED certification now having been awarded to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and Veer Tower at CityCenter, bringing the metaresorts LEED tally up to six, it's now one of the largest sustainable communitites in the world. Rush Tower Debuts:

The Golden Nugget's $150-million new Rush Tower is scheduled to open today, featuring 500 guest rooms, a two-level infinity pool that ajoins The Tank, and Chart House Aquarium Restaurant, which features a 75,000-gallon tropical aquarium filled with more than 1,000 tropical fish.

Great American Smoke-Out:

The 35th annual Great American Smoke-Out is coming to UNLV tomorrow, November 20. The event is a day designated by the American Cancer Society to assist individuals to quit smoking. The American Cancer Society will be arranging a booth at UNLV tomorrow on the Pida Plaza from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. and handing out smoke stopper kits for individuals who throw away their cigarettes on the spot.

New Rat Pack Show Debuts:

Sandy Hackett's Rat Pack Show opens tonight at the Sahara in the Congo Room. Hackett himself plays Joey Bishop in the production. Showtime's 7 p.m.

Oscar to Make a Comeback:

Resorts A.C. Deep in the Hole:

As it prepares to hand over control to its lenders, who haven't been paid in a year, the first United States casino to open outside Nevada says it owes nearly $337 million more than it has right now. Resorts Atlantic City's latest quarterly financial report showed a massive 78.7 percent decline in gross operating profits and the property expressed doubts at its ability to continue operations.

Gaughan Inducted Into Hall of Fame:

Today long-time casino owner Michael Gaughan joined his father Jackie by being inducted into the American Gaming Association Hall Of Fame. He was lauded for his four decades of leadership in the gaming industry and for creating "friendly, nurturing working environments" for his employees.

More Money for Mob Museum:

The Las Vegas City Council today approved over $80,000 in additional funding to help keep the downtown Mob Museum project moving forward. So far, it's still on track for an opening date about a year from now in the historic federal office building and post office building at 300 Stewart.

Departing FBI Chief Predicts Escalating Fraud:

Steve Martinez, who has spent the past three-and-a-half years managing the Las Vegas division of the FBI, will be transferring to Los Angeles next month. Of his experience in the Las Vegas field, he comments in today's Las Vegas Sun that, "Las Vegas brings with it some things you may not see as much as in other FBI field offices. Everybody's bad guys end up here eventually." As to the future, he predicts escalating levels of mortgage fraud and other white collar crimes in the city, saying his agents are already working on hundreds of cases, some involving victims who lost millions of dollars.

Trump Bows Out:

Citing the "highly expensive and distracting litigation" that his reorganization plan was becoming mired in, and his ongoing sense of "responsibility" towards Atlantic City, Donald Trump has abandoned his attempt to regain control of the bankrupt casino company Trump Entertainment Resorts Inc. He will permit the rival ad hoc committee of creditors with whom he was competing to continue using his name on three casinos.

Motown Show is Back:

Popular Motown tribute Hitzville The Show debuts at its new home in the V Theater this evening. It was formerly at the Harmon Theatre before leaving town to go on tour.

Fontainebleau to be Auctioned:

Yesterday Penn National Gaming Inc. made a $50 million "stalking horse" bid to buy the stalled Strip casino-resort. Their plans include spending an additional $1.46 billion to complete the project. This move triggered an auction process in which other investors will have a chance to bid for the property. Fontainebleau is proposing a Jan. 15 deadline for competing offers to be submitted.

Windfall Bounty for GCB:

It's been announced that the Nevada State Gaming Control Board will be the beneficiary of over 10 percent of the nearly $600,000 seized in 2005 from accounts -- including one at the MGM Grand -- belonging to Japanese organized crime figure Susumu Kajiyama. Kajiyama is serving more than six years in prison in Japan on loan sharking charges.

Last Chance to Claim AC Slot Payouts:

There is over $12.4 million in unclaimed slot winnings in Atlantic City and the New Jersey Casino Control Comission has passed a new regulation taht sets up a one-year deadline for redeeming slot vouchers and keno tickets. Unlike in Nevada, where the norm is a 60 or 90 days for TITO vouchers and 30 days for sports-betting tickets, in Atlantic City previously the customer had unlimited time to cash them in. Now, all vouchers dated prior to April, 2009 must be redeemed by April, 2010. For unclaimed winnings after that date, the casinos will receive a 75 percent cut, with 25 percent going to the state. While $12.4 million sounds like a lot, in reality most of the tickets are for small amounts, often less than $1, which people just didn't bother to cash in.

Stations Post Huge Loss:

The bankrupt locals casino company posted a net loss of $455.4 million in the third quarter, due primarily to costs associated with its debt reorganization. It's an increase from the $23.4 million loss posted for the same quarter last year.

M Goes Big for Christmas:

On December 2 M Resort will take possession of the nation's tallest Christmas tree. It's expected that the 109-foot White Fir will take up to a week to decorate, prior to the official tree lighting ceremony at 5 p.m. on December 12, when hot chocolate, carolers, Christmas cookies, and other festivities will be laid on. The tree will be located outside at the Villagio del Sole piazza.

Beaujolais Nouveau Time:

Paris Las Vegas will be honoring the time honored tradition, regulated by French law, that dictates that Beaujolais Nouveau is released no sooner than the third Thursday of November each year. This year the resort welcomes Holly Madison and a Lucille Ball impersonator for a traditional grape stomping that will take place on Ah Sin's Strip-side harvest-themed patio at 3 p.m., to coincide with the start of midnight festivities in Paris, France.

Annual Cactus Lighting:

Tomorrow evening will mark the 16th annual ethel's Chocolate Holiday Cactus Lighting at the Henderson factory and cactus garden. Comedian George Wallace will host the event, which takes place from 5-8 p.m. and will feature entertainment from Zowie Bowie and Michael Grimm. Historic Chapel Reopens:

This weekend saw the return of the Candlelight Wedding Chapel, which in its previous incarnation married celebrities including Bette Midler, Michael Caine, Whoopi Goldberg, and Barry White. Formerly located on the Strip just north of the Riviera Hotel, the Chapel originally opened in 1966 and was one of only two free-standing wedding chapels on the Strip at that time. It closed in 2003 to wake way for the Fontainebleau project and was threatened with demolition until a local philanthropist purchased it and donated the building to Clark County. The chapel was relocated to the Clark County Museum in Henderson (1830 S. Boulder Hwy), where it's been restored and an historical exhibit added inside.

Vegas Not Good for Pedestrians:

As reported in today's Las Vegas Sun, a new report by The Surface Transportation Policy Partnership and Transportation for America -- two advocacy groups calling for additional funding for pedestrian and bicycle safety in the U.S., ranks Las Vegas 11th out of 52 metropolitan areas in terms of the most dangerous areas in the country for pedestrians. The Las Vegas metropolitan area had 91 pedestrian fatalities in 2007 and 2008, according to the report, with pedestrians accounting for about 20 percent of all traffic deaths. The national average is about 12 percent.

Malfunctioning Escalator Injures Twelve:

A escalator carrying guests at Caesars Palace malfunctioned yesterday afternoon, resulting in twelve people being taken to hospital. All were later released and returned to the hotel. No further information about the nature of their injuries or the cause of the accident has been forthcoming as yet.

New Brunch Debuts:

The Fountains Brunch at Jasmine debuts today at Bellagio. It's $45, but it sounds distinctly high-end. We're attempting to try and review it for the next LVA.

Money Talks:

The board is set up strangely in the Leroy's Money Talks handicapping contest. LVASports' Fezzik was 0-1 yesterday and it was his best-bet tie-breaker that lost. Opponent Tim Trushel was 1-2. What makes it interesting is that of the seven total picks allocated each, two were identical. So Fezzik, trailing by one, has four live picks today to Trushel's two and one of them is his best bet. Wowowee Comes to Orleans:

An audience of 8,000 is anticipated at the Orleans Arena this afternoon for the live filming of the "Wowowee Show," the No. 1 rated Filipino TV show in the world. The event starts at 3 p.m.

LGBT Wedding Expo:

The JW Marriott in Summerlin hosts the Gay and Lesbian Wedding Expo today from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Over 40 gay-friendly businesses, including event coordinators, floral designers, travel planners, and cake decorators are expected to attend.

Fighter in Critical Condition:

Filipino boxer ZC Oliveros "The Dream" Gorres remains in critical condition after undergoing an emergency surgery at University Medical Center in Las Vegas, where he was rushed after winning his fight against Colombian Luis Melendez at Mandalay Bay today. The boxer collapsed after the fight and had to undergo surgery due to a blood clot on the left side of his brain. He's currently in a medically induced coma in the intensive care unit at UMC, where he remains under close observation.

Vegas Snapshots:

Las Vegas has made another "10 Great Places" list in USA Today. This one is "10 Great Places for Famous Photography," with nods going to the Bellagio fountains and Mirage volcano.

Pacq Mentality:

The public is firmly behind Manny Pacquiao in tonight's big boxing match with Miguel Cotto. The Pac Man is nearly a 3-1 favorite as fight time approaches.

Stripper-Mobile Parked:

Amid complaints from county authorities, the so called "stripper-mobile" has been pulled from the streets. It was a truck with a Plexiglas covering that housed a live pole dancer. The stripper-mobile was an advertising gimmick for the Little Darlings and Deja Vu strip clubs.

Pollack Bolts WSOP:

Jeffrey Pollack has resigned his post as World Series of Poker commissioner. Pollack spent four years in the position, from which he elevated the WSOP to one of the world's biggest and best-known "sporting" events. Pollack gave no definitive reason for leaving.

Holiday Inn Returns to Vegas:

For nearly 20 years there was a Holiday Inn center Strip (although in 1990 it adopted a Mississippi Riverboat theme, it was still a Holiday Inn), before converting to Harrah's in 1992. There was also a Holiday Inn on E. Flamingo, which an LVA staffer recalls staying at back in 1997 while here on business, but that's long gone. Now, just as occupancy rates are down and half-built hotel skeletons are all over town, Holiday Inn is relaunching its signature brand with a $35 million, 129-room hotel scheduled to open before Thanksgiving at 4055 Palos Verdes St., near Flamingo Road and Swenson Street. We wish them luck.

Fireworks Elevated Skyward Once More:

Good news: After last year's dismal ground-level New Year's firework "display," which was barely visible to most, it's just been announced that this "America's Party" pyrotechnics will revert to being fired from seven rooftop locations. The decision to go terrestrial last year was based largely on the preceding rooftop fire at the Monte Carlo and the need for more diligent building inspections and, according to the official statement, "Fireworks by Grucci, the Clark County Fire Department and Building Services and the individual resort properties have worked tirelessly since January of this year to address the fire and structural safety issues associated with firing the show from the rooftops."

More "Green" Kudos to CityCenter:

The LEED-certified metaresort that opens next month has just been honored by The Forest Stewardship Council-US (FSC-US®) as the best commercial project of 2009 in the fifth annual Designing & Building with FSC Awards. At 7 p.m. this evening Santa will arrive (already?) via horse drawn carriage at Town Square Park, accompanied by a parade of holiday characters and a high school marching band. The owners of the nightclub at Planet Hollywood that had its liquor license revoked earlier this year, have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the Southern District of Florida, apparently listing less than $50,000 in assets against between $1 million and $10 million in liabilities. The nightclub and its sister ultralounge The Living Room are currently operating under a 90-day liquor license while Metro continues its investigation of the owners and management team.

Grim Outlook for Nevada:

According to a report issued today by the Pew Center on the States, Nevada is one of nine states that ranked "most like California" when comparing economic and political factors, which as anyone who knows anything about the mess that California's in can only take as a dire assessment. In fact, Nevada has been identified as the state that will be last to recover from the current recession, with high foreclosure and unemployment rates, dwindling tax revenues, a dependency on "easy money," and tension between Gov. Palms Penalized:

The Palms has agreed to pay $100,000 to settle a Gaming Control Board complaint relating to the mismanagement of two poker tournaments in 2007, as reported in today's Las Vegas Review-Journal. The events were managed by third parties and merely hosted by the off-Strip casino, but the GCB found them, as the licensee, ulitimately responsible to oversee the running of these tournaments. In one instance, a charity event for the Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada run by operators Michael Eakman & Associates, the charity did not receive its share of the proceeds until four months after the event. In the other, the United States Poker League held a tournament in October 2007 and failed to pay the winners their complete winnings, instead offering half cash and the other half in post-dated checks totaling $450,416, 22 of which bounced. The Palms made good and paid the tournament prizes in full, but the GCB contended that the property had an obligation to ensure the prizes were paid at the time.

Ink Craze Continues:

Las Vegas ongoing affair with celebrity tattooing is set to continue with news today of a collaboration between ink impresario Mario Barth and the Light Group. "Mario Barth at The Mirage," set to open in the first quarter of 2010 in the Strip resort, is described as a "baroque-inpsired exclusive lifestyle tattoo studio, interactive lounge, and bar room.

Crisis in Macau:

Just as word comes of the resumption of the Sands' stalled Macau projects comes bigger and opposite news from the Asian gambling enclave: The massive expansion of the casino industry, coupled with a drought in southern China, means that Macau may run out of fresh water supplies within as few as 10 days, with signs that non-essential supplies for features like pools and fountains may be cut off as early as this weekend as authorities struggle to keep non-toxic water flowing through the taps and face the prospect of shipping in bottled water. Unlike Hong Kong, which struck a deal last year with Guandong province that guarantees water supplies "even in a drought", Macau has no such known contingency plans in place, reports the London Times.

Sands Back in Action:

According to a report in today's Wall Street Journal, Las Vegas Sands Corp. plans to restart work on two stalled construction sites in Macau early next year, having secured financing from banks for $1.45 billion of the estimated $2 billion needed to complete construction on what's been dubbed the "Cotai Strip," a stretch of reclaimed land off the main peninsula of Macau. Financing issues a year ago caused construction to be halted and 11,000 workers to be laid off.

Good News at Last:

For the first time since May 2008, Las Vegas visitor volume was up in September. More than 3 million people visited the city, compared with 2.9 million in the same month a year ago -- a 4.3% increase.

Pinnacle Chief Quits Abruptly:

Dan Lee, chief executive of Las Vegas-based Pinnacle Entertainment (PNK), resigned abruptly today. While the official line was that he left "to pursue other business interests," others point to the fact that he's currently being investigated by Missouri regulators for alleged verbal threats against a local politician. Pinnacle owns and operates six major casinos in Nevada, Louisiana, Indiana, and Missouri, as well as small casinos in Argentina.

Layoffs at Herbst:

Casino and slot-route operator Herbst Gaming has today announced layoffs throughout the company. Herbst filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection back in March of this year and the layoffs come less than two weeks after the bankruptcy court in Reno approved a plan that will hand the company to its secured lenders sometime in 2010. The total number of layoffs has not been confirmed, but estimates put the figure in the hundreds.

Yucca Mountain Plan Scrapped:

As reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, internal Department of Energy budget documents obtained by a Washington, D.C., area trade publication reveal that the department is abandoning its controversial effort to license the planned Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository. "All license defense activities will be terminated in December 2009," according to the budget request cited by the publication, The Energy Daily.

Neon Celebration This Evening:

Three neon signs -- from the Silver Slipper, Binion's Horseshoe, and Bow & Arrow Motel -- will be will be lit at sundown this evening along the downtown stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard recently officially designated as a National Scenic Byway. Parking's available at the Reed Whipple Cultural Center parking lot on Las Vegas Boulevard north of U.S. 95.

"Strippers in a Box":

Déjà Vu Showgirls all-nude gentlemen’s club has gone a step beyond the mobile billboards that drive up and down the Strip: Now, from 10 p.m.-2 a.m. nightly the club is using a truck with perspex windows to showcase its dancers pole dancing live. Apparently, Metro’s OK’d the project and the girls wear bikinis and skirts and are allegedly "PG" in their moves. Downtown Arena Contract Awarded:

Baltimore developer The Cordish Co. has been selected to develop a 20-acre sports venue and entertainment district in downtown Las Vegas. The development agreement gives the firm two years to conduct a feasibility study, create planning documents and develop a public-private financing plan. The proposed Las Vegas Live! calls for a 20,000-seat sports arena for an NBA or NHL franchise, a mixed-use entertainment district, hotel and casino. The vote by the Las Vegas City Council was unanimous.

Eating Challenge:

It’s a busy day for Phil Hellmuth Jr. , who will be joining former Playboy cover girl Angelica Bridges, currently starring in Fantasy at the Luxor, and a raft of Major League Eaters taking part in the first-ever Martorano’s Masters Meatball Eating Championship today at the Rio from 8-12 p.m. The winner takes home the lion’s share of the $3,000 prize purse.

Hellmuth Book Signing:

Poker champ Phil Hellmuth Jr. will be at Barnes and Noble on 8915 W. Charleston from 6 p.m. today to sign copies of his new book, Deal Me In. The autobiographical compilation features stories from 20 of the biggest names in poker.

Final Two:

It took more than 17 hours of play, but the World Series of Poker's main event is down to two -- Joe Cada with 135,950,000 in chips and Darvin Moon with 58,850,000. The rest of the field finished as follows: James Akenhead (9th), Kevin Schaffel (8th), Phil Ivey (7th), Steve Begleiter (6th), Jeff Shulman (5th), Eric Buchman (4th), and Antoine Saout (3rd). Heads-up play will begin at 10 p.m. Monday night. Cada will attempt to become the youngest champion ever, while the mild-mannered Moon will try to complete a run somewhat reminscent of Chris Moneymaker's, which touched off poker's popularity boom in 2003.

New Leader:

Eric Buchman has wrested the lead from Darvin Moon. Buchman has 55 million to Moon's 42 million. And Ivey has doubled up to 16 million. The new low-chip man is Shulman with 7 million.

Ivey the Short Stack:

Everyone's on him, but Phil Ivey is hurting. With seven players left, Ivey is the low stack with 8.6 million. Leader Moon is now over 60 million.

Schaffel Out:

Ken Schaffel has gone out in 8th, his AA cracked by Buchman's KK (he made four kings). Cada is the short stack at 7.9 million.

First Man Down:

James Akenhead was eliminated from the World Series of Poker's main event when his 33 couldn't stand up against the 99 of Schaffel. Eight players remain with Darvin Moon maintaining a big lead with nearly 60 million chips. The low man is Cada with 7.8 million. Ivey is next low at 10 million.

A Different Poker Tourney:

Tomorrow the Rio will host Vince Neil's annual Celebrity Friends Poker Tournament to benefit the Skylar Neil Foundation. The buy-in is $500, plus a $50 registration fee, with seating limited to 200 entrants. You can register tomorrow from 4 p.m. at the main casino cage for your shot at a share of the $50,000 prize pool.

Las Vegas in Ireland:

An 800-acre $700 million "Las Vegas-style village" has been proposed for County Tipperary in Ireland. The project, dubbed Tipperary Venue, would include a 60,000-square-foot casino, along with a 500-room hotel, National Hunt racecourse, 7,000-seat greyhound track, golf course, 15,000-seat concert venue, and a centerpiece full-size replica of the White House; it's described as "the most sophisticated and ambitious project Ireland has ever seen." Construction could start as early as 2010.

The final table of the World Series of Poker main event reconvenes today. Play begins at noon and tickets are available on first come, first served basis, but you'd better get there early. All eyes will be on Phil Ivey, who is easily the most highly rated player at the table. However, he's sitting well back in 7th place with 9.8 million in chips. According to an article in today's Las Vegas Sun, several of the project's subcontractors are collaborating to step up efforts to find financing and gaming partners to complete the project. "We are exploring a variety of options that we can propose to the bankruptcy court, including debtor in possession financing," announced Ronald Tutor, chairman and CEO of Fortune 500 company Tutor Perini, which owns Fontainebleau subcontractor Desert Plumbing & Heating Co.

More Diamonds for Nevada:

Travel group AAA has honored Nevada with three more Five Diamond hotel awards -- for The Ritz Carlton at Lake Las Vegas, Encore at Wynn, and the Palazzo -- bringing the total number of Five Diamond properties in the state to eight.

MGM Mirage Learns from Harrah's:

Until now, MGM Mirage exercised a policy of having each property in the group compete with the others, as if they were totally independent competing entities. It was a strategy designed to keep salespeople "on their toes," but it's one that new CEO Jim Murren feels has put the company at a competitive disadvantage. Hence, MGM Mirage will now follow the same model that Harrah's has employed successfully for years, with group sales agents cross-selling rooms, restaurants, and entertainment options throughout the entire group, based on the customer's needs and preferences.

Vegas Debut for Tomlin:

Comedian Lily Tomlin will be performing in Las Vegas for the first time in her career at the MGM Grand from Nov. 10-18. The show performs at 8 p.m and tickets are priced from $58.50-$80.50.

Bette Announces Final Date:

Bette Midler announced today that the final performance of The Showgirl Must Go On will be Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010. The final performance will mark the end of her two-year residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, which began on February 20, 2008. There's no word as yet as to who will fill her shoes, nor those of Cher, whose run at The Colosseum ends Dec. 20.

Ex-NBA Ref Released from Jail:

Disgraced former NBA referee Tim Donaghy was released from Hernando County Jail in Floridaa today after serving most of a 15-month sentence after pleading guilty to conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting betting information through interstate commerce. Donaghy was sentenced in July 2008 after he admitted to taking thousands of dollars from a professional gambler in exchange for inside tips on games, including those he worked.

It is with sadness that we report that Richard Abowitz' long-running Las Vegas blog for the LA Times has been discontinued after four entertaining years -- another victim of the current economic climate and its affects on Las Vegas and visitation from SoCal. Today marks the final entry for the always insightful and well-written Movable Buffet. Richard hopes to start blogging again somewhere else at some point in the future, so watch this space for updates.

Record Temperature Forecasted:

Ongoing high pressure is expected to bring a temperature of 85 degrees to Las Vegas this afternoon, which would make it the warmest Nov. 4 in 33 years. This 80-plus degree weather is due to continue through Thursday, before dropping around 10 degrees, with a chance of rain on Sunday.

Josette's Bistro to Close:

The former LVA local corner, and a particular favorite of our staffers, will close Nov. 21 after eight years. The good news, however, is that owner Chef Josette LeBlond will be moving downtown to open the new Las Vegas Rocks Café at 450 Fremont Street. The new venue's due to debut Dec. 1. From now through Nov. 21, dining hours at Josette's Bistro will remain Wednesday through Saturday from 5:30 to 10 p.m.

Ohioans Approve Four Big-City Casinos:

For the fist time in five tries, Ohio residents yesterday voted in favor approving Las Vegas-style casinos for Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Toledo; Issue 3 passed with 53% voting yes. The measure carried by large majorities in Cleveland and Cincinnati and a small majority in Toledo, losing in the Columbus area. Dan Gilbert, who owns the Cleveland Cavaliers, will develop the casinos in Cleveland and Cincinnati, while Penn National Gaming will develop the other two. Depending on legal and constitutional challenges by opponents and a loosening of credit, construction on the four casinos could begin as early as late next year, with projected opening dates in 2012.

Surprise Kudos for Las Vegas:

Forbes' list of America's Most Toxic Cities, has named Las Vegas the least toxic of 40 major metropolitan areas. While not known for its healthy recreational and dining habits, the surprising accolade was awarded based on factors including air quality, the number of facilities that release toxic chemicals into the enviroment, and the quantity of that release. Atlanta came in at #40 as the "most toxic city" in the U.S.

Food Channel Coming to Big Dog's:

Big Dog's Draft House (4543 N. Rancho Rd) will welcome the Food Channel on Wednesday, Nov. 4th from 7 p.m.-11 p.m.) to taste their food and brews. The public's invited to join them.

Cooking with Star Chefs:

The ongoing series of free cooking demonstrations from top chefs at Wynn and Encore continues at Whole Foods Market (Town Square) tonight from 6-8 p.m. with Carlos Guia of the Country Club at Wynn teaching "Simple Ways to Cook Restaurant-Style Seafood Dishes at Home."

Golden Nugget Buyout:

Landry's has just announced their acceptance of Chairman and CEO Tilman Fertitta's offer of $14.75 per share to take downtown's Golden Nugget private. The transaction is valued at $1.2 billion, including debt.

Card Counters Win in IN:

Last week, the Indiana Court of Appeals ruled in favor of an advantage player who was banned from the Rising Sun riverboat for counting cards. Noting that the casino had not asked state regulators for explicit permission to '86' card counters, the court also held that barring advantage players conflicted with Indiana casinos' specific directive to "benefit the people of Indiana by promoting tourism and assisting economic development." Indiana casinos could still petition the state to issue a new rule addressing this gray area but for now it's 'game on' for advantage players in the Hoosier State.

Another Buffet Cut-Back:

Last month M Resort axed breakfast from its buffet; now Silverton has discontinued breakfast during the week. They still serve brunch from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Job Fair for New Bar:

Pete's, the new dueling piano bar that opens at Town Square later this month, is holding a 2-day open job fair for all positions today and tomorrow from noon to 5 p.m.

Cirque Hearts Locals:

While the long-running Cirque du Soleil anniversary special for all (buy one ticket, get a second for $25) has expired, the group says it plans to offer holiday deals to locals for its Las Vegas shows. Customers who buy a regularly priced ticket for Mystere, O, LOVE, KÀ, Criss Angel Believe or Zumanity will get a second ticket for $25, plus a $25 gift certificate toward another ticket purchase or for use in Cirque du Soleil gift stores. The offer will run from sometime in November through February.

Major Delays on I-15:

The northbound lane of the freeway is at a standstill from Sahara following a rush-hour horse-trailer crash. Avoid the area at all cost if you possibly can.

Kaplan Gets 51 Months":

Betonsports Plc online gambling site founder Gary S. Kaplan has been sentenced to 51 months in prison for his role in the company's violation of U.S. laws banning the placement of bets by wire. The Federal Bureau of Prisons may award him credit for 31 months he's already spent in federal custody. In August Kaplan pleaded guilty to conspiring to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act and forfeited $43.7 million. In 2004 Betonsports.com took in $1.25 billion, 98% of which was from U.S. customers.

MGM Grand Buffet Update:

As we had suspected, the prices sent to us by MGM Grand this morning did not reflect the recent changes they'd implemented across the board. Check out the listing in our Buffet section for the correct prices for these and every other buffet meal in Las Vegas.

Vegas to Go Child-Friendly Again:

After the 1990s attempts to promote the city as a family-friendly destination were abandoned, Las Vegas focused on promoting itself as an adult playground once more. This could be about to change, with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority pressing for a county code change that would allow casinos to provide temporary day care for conventions. Current Clark County regulations allow resorts to set up permanent play areas for children (you can find them listed in our Las Vegas Visitor Guide) but not the licensing of temporary child care at casino-convention areas, which it's feared could be a deterrent for some would-be business traffic.

Hard Rock to Reimburse Boot It Victims:

Hard Rock Marketing Director Phil Shalala today announced that the property will reimburse drivers hit by $200 car booting fines and tow threats for using the parking lot across the street at Paradise and Harmon. The property's own parking lot has been severely reduced in size in recent months due to ongoing construction work, and patrons using the strip mall opposite have been hit by steep parking fines. The Hard Rock is complaining that "No Parking" signs are too obscure and hard to read and that the "Boot It" company employed by businesses in the mall has been using heavy-handed tactics against Hard Rock patrons. "It's just ridiculous. It's obnoxious and it's really not necessary," commented Shalala to FOX5 News. The casino will offer a $200 credit to anyone who can show their receipt after paying the parking fine.

All-Dayer Canceled:

Effective immediately, MGM Grand has discontinued its all-day buffet special, that enabled diners to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner for a set price of $33.33 ($39.78 on weekends). Regular meal prices continue, with breakfast at $14.50, lunch $17.50, and dinner $25.99 ($27.99 Friday and Saturday).

Boyd Still After Station:

Boyd Gaming Corp. continues to pursue Station Casions, yesterday filing a motion in the bankruptcy proceedings asking the court to allow the company to submit a reorganization plan for its competitor. Boyd was rejected earlier this year when it offered to buy a large portion of Station and is now asking the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Reno to appoint an examiner so other parties can offer competing reorganization plans. Last week Station asked for a four-month extension to propose its own plan to reorganize its finances. The current deadline is Nov. 25.

Football Field Report:

Here's a report from Venetian/Palazzo. Lagasse's Stadium is a monster, with big screens and big crowds, but be prepared to pay $6.50 per beer. Oooph! Upstairs at First Food, the scene's not the same, but you can get a Bloody Mary with a Slim Jim garnish for $7.

Pumpkin Disposal:

Talking of the Springs Preserve, the environmentally-friendly attraction is offering a complimentary pumpkin composting service through November 22. Day of the Dead Festival:

From 3 to 9 p.m. today Las Vegas Springs Preserve will celebrate its first-ever Día de los Muertos festival, with activities including face painting, sugar skull decorating, Mariachis, dance performances, scary storytelling rides, and a Day of the Dead-themed play.
