Lastest in Watanabe Case:

Harrah's Entertainment was today ordered to turn over documents relating to Terrance Watanabe's gambling history by a Clark County District Court judge. The high-rolling businessman lost $127 gambling in 2007 and is refusing to pay off part of the debt, claiming that the casino operator encouraged him to wager while intoxicated on alcohol and prescription and non-prescription drugs that they plied him with. Watanabe's facing up to 28 years in prison on four felony counts of theft for writing bad checks. Harrah's is under investigation from gaming regulators to ascertain whether any rules were violated in the treatment of Watanabe.

Lottery Superpowers Join Forces:

In the largest lottery agreement in U.S. history, Powerball and Mega Millions are partnering to create the largest market ever for jackpot games. As of Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, players in 33 jurisdictions -- representing a combined representing a combined population of 199 million people -- will be able to purchase tickets for both Powerball and Mega Millions at official lottery retail locations.

Clinton Coming to Caesars:

President Bill Clinton speak at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on Monday, Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m., presenting a lecture titled "Embracing our Common Humanity". Tickets, available from the Box Office and Ticketmaster outlets, go on sale at 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 1. The price has yet to be announced.

Elton to Return?:

We have nothing remotely definite, but we did read on Sundance Channel's blog yesterday how the writer had been sitting at the same table as Elton John at a recent dinner, and that he expressed a desire to return to Las Vegas. We'll let you know if we hear anything more substantive.

ADC to LVH:

Andrew Dice Clay will be leaving the Riviera to begin a long-term (min. 28 weeks) run at the Shimmer Showroom at the Las Vegas Hilton. Tickets for the 11 p.m. shows go on sale this Saturday, Jan. 30, but the price has not yet been announced.

Goodfellas Reminder:

No Funding for MAGLEV:

The proposed magnetic levitation rail link between Las Vegas and Southern California has been denied any share of the $8 billion federal fund for high-speed rail projects because the project was deemed "ineligible" for having misapplied for funding.

Tomlin Returns:

Comedienne Lily Tomlin will be bringing her "Not Playing With a Full Deck" stand-up show back to Caesars Palace from March 11-17. Tickets are on sale now and start at $50.

Herbst Emerges:

As reported by today's R-J, Herbst Gaming -- which owns fifteen casinos, including a dozen in Nevada, plus a slot route -- will emerge from bankruptcy next Friday. It's predicted that it could take as long as a year to determine how its future operations will be organized.

Foxwoods Reprimanded:

State gaming regulators yesterday warned investors that they will strip Foxwoods' South Philadelphia project of its casino license if the developers don't quickly submit specifics about the project, which were due Dec. 1. The Gaming Control Board unanimously voted to punish Foxwoods with a $116,000 fine -- which will continue at a rate of $2,000/day until the drawings are submitted -- and set a hearing for March 3 to consider further sanctions, including revoking the project's license. "Our patience is finished," said Gregory Fajt, chairman of the gaming board.

Goss Goes to Caesars:

After a 12-week run at the Palms, Brit. boy Matt Goss is moving his show to Cleopatra's Barge at Caesars Palace. The show's scheduled to open March 12.

The Colosseum at Caesars Palace has been named "Venue of the Decade: 2000-2009" by Billboard Magazine in the category of 5,000 capacity or less. "The Colosseum grossed as much as the number 2, 3, 4, and 5 venues combined, and we didn't even open for business until March of 2003," said John Nelson, vice president of AEG Live Las Vegas. He thanked headliners Celine Dion, Elton John, Jerry Seinfeld, Bette Midler, and Cher for their dedication and hard work.

Jackson's Vegas Pad Sold:

Following yesterday's news of the sale of Nicholas Cage's Las Vegas mansion comes word that a 16,461-square-foot Vegas property that was rented to Michael Jackson in 2008 has sold to an anonymous Californian couple for $3.1 million.

Tabish Makes Parole:

Rick Tabish, who's currently serving time on numerous charges including burglary and grand larceny, has been granted parole by the Nevada State Board of Parole Commissioners. Tabish, along with his ex-lover Sandy Murphy, was initially charged with the murder of Ted Binion, the crime of which they were both subsequently acquitted, but Tabish was arrested while digging up silver buried in Binion's secret desert vault and continues to serve time for this theft, although he maintains he was acting on Binion's wishes. His parole eligibility begins April 2, 2010 and he could be released on that date or shortly thereafter if his release plans are approved.

MO Casino to Close:

Missouri gambling regulators have approved the closure of St. Louis' floating President Casino. The Gaming Commission voted unanimously to revoke the casino's license due to declining revenues, poor management, and suspicion that it would not pass an upcoming hull inspection. The riverboat casino, owned by Pinnacle Entertainment Inc., is due to close by July 1 unless the Commission's decision is challenged during the next 30 days.

Mirage Job Fair:

The weather may seem a little inclement to be thinking of pool season, but don't let that put you off. Today from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. and tomorrow from 3-7 p.m., the Mirage is hosting its summer Pool/Food & Beverage job fair and is seeking bar tenders, cocktail servers, cabana hosts, cooks, lifeguards, cashiers, and others. Icahn Official Winner of F'bleau:

It's official: Carl Icahn has won the auction for the bankrupt Fontainebleau property on the Las Vegas Strip, with a bid of $150 million, including $105 million in cash. The win was something of a foregone conclusion, since he'd been approved by gaming regulators and was deemed the only qualified bidder in the auction. The sale's expected to close Feb. 9 but Icahn has already stated that he has yet to decide what to do with the unfinished property.

Fremont St. Crash Update:

More details are now available concerning the downtown crash reported earlier. Apparently, around 2:30 p.m. this afternoon, the driver of a pick-up truck was seen speeding up Third Street, before fatally crashing into the Third Street stage by the Golden Nugget. No pedestrians were injured in the crash. Police are now trying to free the dead man's body from the wreckage.

Fremont Street Accident:

We don't have any details as yet, beyond what was just reported by Channel 8 News: "Las Vegas police say a truck hit a structure near the Fremont Street Experience at Third Street. Metro's Fatal Accident Detail is headed to the scene of the crash. 8 News Now will have full details at 4 p.m." We'll keep you posted.

Rough Hustle - LVA Movie Exclusive:

Set in downtown Vegas (where much of the filming took place), Rough Hustle is the debut feature film from producer-director – and ex-pro blackjack player – Delaney Dragon. Due to hit the theaters later this year, LVA has been given an exclusive first-screening of the trailer (MTV wanted it, but no!) and from what we’ve seen so far, it looks pretty cool. The story revolves around a team of smart blue-collar players trying to hit the big time against the gritty, hard-boiled background of downtown Las Vegas, led by a guy who’s trying to put his disheveled life back together. We’ll present our review once we’ve received the preview copy, but in the meantime, enjoy the trailer and let us know what you think.

MGM Exiting A.C.?:

While both the Nevada and Mississippi gaming regulators have sanctioned MGM Mirage's Macau partnership with Pansy Ho, daughter of controversial gaming billionaire Stanley Ho, New Jersey wants the company to sever its ties with the family. With Atlantic City's prospects looking increasingly dubious (see the recent item in this column about competition from Pennsylvania, for example), and a potentially lucrative Hong Kong IPO in the works, sources said MGM Mirage is taking steps to exit the New Jersey market, where it owns 50 percent of the Borgata, plus a 72-acre parcel near the resort in an area known as Renaissance Pointe. If MGM Mirage opts to sell its share in Borgata, Boyd Gaming Corp., which owns the other 50 percent of the property, would have right of first refusal.

Off-Strip Dining Tips:

Yesterday's New York Post has an excellent list of "21 Essential Off-Strip Bars and Restaurants," all of which we have to concur with, and many of which are previous LVA "Local Corners." The same also picked the Top 10 Tables on the Strip, with Wynn and CityCenter emerging the big winners.

A.C. Causes a Stir on Fox News:

As noted earlier today, publisher Anthony Curtis' was invited to be the expert contributor on Fox News' "Your World With Neil Cavuto" today. The topic was whether President Obama is metaphorically "doubling down" on the U.S. economy, so Curtis' expertise as a world-renowned blackjack player was sought, but his independent, apolitical take on the subject was perhaps not quite what the Fox crew had anticipated. Goodman Explains His Decision:

Click here to catch Mayor Oscar Goodman's explanation of his decision not to run for governor, which he put down to a quality-of-life choice and the desire to spend more time with his family and not be separated from his wife, who would not have moved to Carson City. He promised to continue to work hard for the people and city of Las Vegas during the remaining 15 months of his tenure as mayor.

Wranglers to Host Free Skating Lessons:

The Las Vegas Wranglers ice-hockey team has announced that they will host a free Learn to Skate/Learn to Play Hockey clinic for children aged 4-9 on Mar. 21 at the Las Vegas Ice Center on W. Flamingo.

Goodman Not Running for Gov.:

The official announcement isn't due until 2 p.m. this afternoon, but (informed) rumor has it that Mayor Oscar Goodman will not be running for governor of Nevada, as had long been strongly speculated. We'll update you as the story develops.

Leaving Las Vegas:

Actor Nicholas Cage's foreclosed-on Vegas home has been sold to an out-of-state businessman for $4,950,000, 40 percent less than the $8.5 million he paid for it back in 2006. It's among several properties that Cage is being forced to cash in on, while he battles with his former manager over allegedly duping him out of millions of dollars. The actor owes $6 million to the IRS in unpaid taxes.

Best Dog in Vegas:

If you haven't already, get your vote in for the best hot dog in Vegas. We can reveal that every single option has at least one vote, and you've told us about a few we didn't know about (wow, we thought we knew every dog in town!), but it's pretty close at the top, so don't let your fave get beat out! Voting closes at midnight on Tuesday.

A.C. on Fox News Today:

Anthony Curtis will be appearing on Fox News' "Your World With Neil Cavuto" at 4 p.m. ET today, discussing whether President Obama's economic stimulus packages amount to him "doubling down" on the economy, to use a blackjack metaphor.

Icahn to Ditch Condo Plan:

It seems likely that Carl Icahan will abandon the plan to turn Fontainebleau into a hotel condo, as was originally mooted, or into condos exclusively, as was later announced, citing a likely lack of a interest. "I do not think hotel condos will be as much in demand to buy as residential condos under the current market conditions," he said. Agents were offered tours of models before the property went into bankruptcy, but the units never went on sale and there were never any floor plans circulated. Icahn says he's not sure what he will do with the property, and that it might be some while before he decides. It's estimated it could take another $1.5 billion to finish the project.

NFL Championships:

This year's Super Bowl match-up will be determined today, with the Colts -8.5 favorites to beat the Jets (total 40) and the Saints lined -3.5 over the Vikings (total 54). The sports books all over town will be hopping all day (the free beer or hot dog coupon at Orleans mentioned yesterday is also in today's LV Review-Journal).

New Tix for Blue Men:

Beginning tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 25, a new $49* ticket will be available for all Blue Man Group performances at the Venetian. Previously, the cheapest seats were $71.50*. There's also an ongoing locals-only special offer with "friends and family" ticket prices starting at $42* (plus tax and service fees*).

Open House:

From noon to 3 p.m. today, locals can get a free tour of the ReVision House, a 1960s gem that's undergone a state-of-the-art energy conservation retrofitting to be net zero energy and is being profiled as part of the International Homebuilder Show, which is taking place at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The address is 3546 Pueblo Way, in the Paradise Palms mid-century modern neighborhood on the east side of town. There will be signs and brochures available outlining all the ways that energy-conservation and recycling measures have been implemented there.

Binion Reminder:

CBS' "48 Hours" revisits the Ted Binion story tonight at 10 p.m. ET/PT, including trying to find out what happened to millions of dollars that are thought to be missing.

Women's Fair Today:

South Point hosts the 9th Annual Women's Fair today, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with gift bags for the first 500 guests and performances by Thunder From Down Under and Frank Marino's Diva's Las Vegas. The event is free to attend.

Free Beer Tomorrow:

One at least. There's a coupon in today's LV Review-Journal for a free beer or hot dog at the Orleans during the NFL Playoff games tomorrow. Since beers are $2 and hot dogs are $1, basic strategy is to use it for the beer (assuming you want both). Last week the same coupon ran on Saturday only, so check your paper today.

Burger Bar for Vegas?:

Yesterday Burger King Corp. announced that it plans to open a Whopper Bar in the South Beach area of Miami next month, offering American beer and Whopper sandwiches 24/7. A spokesman for the corporation said that similar venues were being planned for other major cities, including New York, L.A., and Las Vegas.

Beauty Queens on Parade:

All 53 Miss America contestants are scheduled to take part in a "meet and greet" event with the public at the Fashion Show mall today. A 5:30 p.m. runway presentation will be followed by an autograph signing in the main hall of the mall. The annual Pageant finale takes place next Saturday, Jan. 30.

More Grim Forecasts for Nevada:

As reported by the R-J, the chief state economist has predicted that Nevada will lose nearly 90,000 more jobs during the next two years, while the state demographer apologized for being the bearer of yet more bad tidings, but predicted the population could decline by another 100,000 people over the next five years. "We are really in unprecedented times," economist Bill Anderson told the Economic Forum in Carson City today. "We have never gone through this kind of economic downturn."

Rebranding in the Works for MGM Macau:

MGM Mirage's co-venture with Pansy Ho has not been as successful as its Wynn and Sands counterparts, a fact blamed on the property's failure to appeal to patrons on the Chinese mainland, according to today's Wall Street Journal. Hence, new President Grant Bowie, formerly of Wynn Macau, has been brought on to re-brand and re-launch the property with a new marketing campaign directly targeting upper middle class Chinese gamblers, with moves like the introduction of a more traditional Chinese buffet and better access for taxi drop-offs.

More Bad News for A.C.:

According to the most recent revenue report, for the first time in history, Pennsylvania took in more slot machine revenues than New Jersey last month, making it the nation's second-busiest state for slots, behind only Nevada. Atlantic City still has more gambling overall because of its table games, but that may change when table games are introduced in Pennsylvania later this year.

Two Rescued from Storm Drains:

The Las Vegas Fire Dept. this afternoon rescued two homeless people trapped by floodwaters in one of the storm drains that run beneath the city. Binion Story on CBS:

CBS' "48 Hours Mystery" show will revisit the Ted Binion story this Saturday, including an interview with headliner Wayne Newton, who new Binion well and told correspondent Peter Van Sant that while he believes Ted's destructive lifestyle contributed to his death, "someone got away with murder." In an attempt to put to rest some of the unanswered questions in the case, "48 Hours" retained ground sonar experts to search the Binion estate for Ted's missing millions. More Impact from Bad Weather:

Expect long delays and more flight cancelations in and out of McCarran airport, with even harsher weather conditions expected between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. today, plus the anticipated flooding in the Vegas Valley is beginning to result in road closures. Those affected so far include: the intersection at Rainbow Blvd and Farm Rd.; State Route 160 leading to Pahrump; State Route 157 leading to Kyle Canyon; and State Route 158 connecting Kyle Canyon to Lee Canyon. Expect more road closures to follow and avoid driving if you can.

Pageant Hopefuls Arrive:

The fifty-three contestants in the 2010 Miss America pageant arrive in Las Vegas today for the pre-competition festivities and preliminary events, with the actual contest concluding Jan. 30. The host property is Planet Hollywood, marking the fifth consecutive year that the contest has been held in Las Vegas, despite the fact that it's never been won by Miss Nevada.

Rapper Crash:

Las Vegas habitué, reality TV personality, and Public Enemy time-keeper Flavor Flav was involved in a serious two-car accident last night in Las Vegas. Flav's fine (unlike his car); no word on the condition of the other driver.

Slim Pickin's for Vegas:

Trip Advisor just released the results of its 2010 Traveler's Choice Awards and there wasn't much love for Las Vegas. We can't find any of our hotels ranking in the overall "Best Of" categories worldwide, although the Four Seasons came in at #9 for Best Luxury hotel in N. America, and Staybridge Suites scored the #4 spot for Best Bargain.

I-15 Ramp Reopens:

The southbound I-15 ramp to the eastbound Beltway is now open to traffic once more, having been closed earlier this morning due to a diesel-fuel spill from a crashed tractor trailer.

Worsening Weather:

There's no sign of the rain abating, with a third storm moving into the Vegas Valley that's expected to drop up to three inches of rain this afternoon. There's a flood advisory in effect for Clark County -- expect the usual chaos on the roads.

Dodgers Coming to Vegas:

The Los Angeles Dodgers will play the Cincinnati Reds in a split-squad exhibition game at Las Vegas' Cashman Field on March 31. That same day LA will also play San Francisco in Glendale, Ariz., and Cincinnati will meet Oakland at Phoenix. The two Dodgers squads then will meet up for an exhibition against Cleveland at Dodger Stadium on April 1.

Singapore's First Resort-Casino Debuts:

Today saw the partial opening of Singapore's first resort-casino, a key part of a government plan to diversify the city-states economy and reduce reliance on manufacturing, while also attempting to raise the the island's brand as a cosmopolitan Asian capital. Resorts World Sentosa, built by Malaysia's Genting Bhd for 6.6 billion Singapore dollars ($5 billion), began the first stage of its phased opening today with the debut of 1,340 rooms in four hotels, including a Hard Rock.

Cooking with M:

Details of the new healthy-living cookery-demo show series at M Resort have just been released. Martini Time with Chef Tina Martini debuts January 26 inside M's custom-built cooking studio and will take place five days a week. Show times are Sunday-Thursday at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 4 p.m. and tickets are $39.95, $49.95 and $59.95. A complete show schedule can be found on the M Resort website at www.themresort.com. More Housing Gloom:

The National Association of Housing Builders annual show opened yesterday at the Las Vegas Convention Center and while Chief Economist David Crowe said that for most of the country, the worst of the housing crisis is past, the news was less rosy for Vegas, with the prediction that the housing market will continue to struggle in 2010 as it faces more price declines and a growing number of foreclosures. The NAHB released its forecast that showed new-home production in Las Vegas will be below 70 percent of normal production by the end of 2011. "It will be continued suffering," said Crowe. Harmon, Krave File for Chpt. 11:

The operating company of Harmon Theater, home to Amazing Jonathan and the Naughty Boys Hypnosis Show, and Krave nightclub at the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood yesterday filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, blaming road closures during CityCenter construction in part for a decrease in traffic. An attorney for the company said his client intends to carry on business as usual at both venues.

Berto Pulls Out of Mosley Fight:

Earlier today WBC Welterweight World Champion Andre Berto stated in a personal press release that due to the catastrophic earthquake that struck Haiti, where his family resides, he is physically and emotionally unable to prepare for his Saturday, Jan. 30 bout with WBA Welterweight World Champion Sugar Shane Mosley and, as a result, will withdraw from the bout. Given the close proximity to the date of the event and the difficulty in finding a suitable replacement for Berto, the event has been canceled entirely. In a separate statement, Mosley expressed his disappointment at the decision, but that he fully understood Berto's decision and that his thoughts and prayers were with his opponent's family and the people of Haiti. All previously purchased tickets can be refunded at original point of sale.

Bette Collecting for Haiti:

Through her final performance at Caesars' Colosseum on Jan. 31, Bette Midler's "Caesar Salad Girls" showgirls will be collecting donations for Haiti relief from fans after the show. The Divine Miss M. will match whatever's raised. To date, the collective contribution stands at $38,742.62, which will go to aid the relief efforts.

Brunch Update:

You win some, you lose some. In this instance, the "win" is the return of the Gospel Brunch at House of Blues, which is back after having been on hiatus for awhile; but gone is a long-running LVA favorite, namely the Broiler Brunch at Boulder Station, which served up its last Sunday offering on Jan. 3. Online Gambling for A.C.?:

New Jersey has entered the fray in the race to become the first state to legalize Internet gambling, with a bill sponsored by Sen. Raymond Lesniak, D-Union, who argues that they're missing out on an estimated $100 million in potential revenue from up to a half-million online gamblers. A recent decision by a federal court of appeals denied the broard legalization of Internet gambling, but left open a window for individual states to permit gambling within state boarders, if operated by state-licensed casinos. If successsful, the move could offer a much-needed boost to the east coast's beleaguered casinos, which were already suffering before the onset of the current global economic malaise. "It's a bold move, and in this economy we need bold moves," Lesniak said.

Déjà Vu Showgirls notorious "Stripper mobile" is back on the road, headed to New Orleans with hopes of arriving in time for the Saints vs. Cardinals game, which is about to kick off. From what we understand, on Friday afternoon the all-nude Vegas' strip club chain's perspex stripper-pole truck had made it as far as El Paso, Texas, with driver and publicist Larry Beard expressing frustration at its 55 mph progress. Playboy Comedy Gets Palms Residency:

Beginning Feb. 18, Playboy Comedy's to get a permanent residency in The Lounge at the Palms, where it's been performing sporadically for some years now and will now take over full-time from Matt Goss, Live From Las Vegas. The award-winning comedy club is hosted each week by Cort McCown and Paul Hughes and kicks off its residency with East Coast comic Nick Di Paolo Feb. 18 through 20 and Sebastian Maniscalco Feb. 25 through 27. Tickets are $39.99 (inclusive of taxes), which includes entry into the Playboy Club following the show.

New Wine Bar for Wynn:

Michael Morton's N9NE Group, which owns and operates several dining and nightlife venues at the Palms, will open a new "intimate and edgy" wine bar at Wynn Las Vegas this fall in a newly renovated space adjacent the Terrace Pointe Cafe.

Harrah's Takes Over Planet Ho:

As long anticipated, Harrah's Entertainment will officialy take over management of the Planet Hollywood's hotel operations at midnight Saturday, as reported by today's R-J, while continuing to work on a complete buyout of the property. Harrah's will take over from Starwood subsidiary Sheraton Operating Corp. in the management of the hotel (exluding the new PH Tower, which is separately owned) and some of the food and beverage operations, while Planet Hollywood will continue to operate the casino.

No Additional Blackjack for Florida:

Yesterday a House panel unanimously overturned the gaming compact that Gov. Charlie Crist negotiated with the Seminole Tribe last August, which would have legalized blackjack at all seven of the tribe's casinos. The tribe continues to offer blackjack tables at several casinos, including the Hard Rock in Tampa, based on a previous compact that Crist and tribal leaders signed in late 2007. This despite the fact that the state Supreme Court found Crist had overstepped his authority in that case by not involving lawmakers in the negotiations.

O'Sheas to Host Venom in Vegas:

Commencing Sunday, Jan. 17, world-renowned animal adventurer and venom expert Donald Schultz will enter a clear glass box located outside O'Sheas Casino and will spend the next ten days and nights in the company of 100 deadly snakes, including cobras, pythons, and rattlesnakes. While incarcerated, he'll be studying the snakes and extracting venom to be used for research. The whole thing's being filmed as part of Animal Planet's new "Wild Recon" series, slated to air Feb. 9 at 8 pm. ET/PT. We just hope it all goes smoother than some of the previous stunts attempted on the Strip in recent times, including Steve Wyrick's fire drop, that burned a member of the crew, and Nathan Burton's ice sculpture debacle that was aborted when the ice started to melt (it was July in Las Vegas...)

Changes at M Buffet:

From tomorrow, the popular Studio B buffet at M Resort will discontinue the $2 players club discount, making the 2-for-1 offer in the 2010 MRB even more appealing. Other changes include adding children's pricing and extending the weekend Seafood Buffet into an all-dayer from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. for $29.95 (formerly just dinner, priced at $24.95). Regular lunch and dinner prices remain unchanged.

Penn Bows Out:

As reported in the R-J, Penn National Gaming has confirmed that it won't pursue its former bid for the bankrupt Fontainebleau resort in Las Vegas, leaving the way clear for stalking horse Carl Icahn, who outbid Penn's lowball bid last year with his $156.6 million offer.

Flamingo Road Closure:

Just in: Metro's currently investigating a suspicious package that was left near the bus stop near Flamingo and Duneville St. on W. Flamingo. As a precaution they've shutdown Flamingo Rd. in both directions from Red Rock to S Lindell Rd. We'll keep you posted.

Cirque du Soleil is to launch a new glossy quarterly in-theatre magazine that will be presented to guests upon entry into each of their seven Las Vegas-based shows. The digest-sized publication will showcase the shows and the artists behind them.

New Restaurant for Paris:

Sugar Factory, the celebrity-beloved candy store which opened its first Las Vegas location last year at the Mirage, is to open a full-blown restaurant at Paris in the Strip-side space currently occupied by Ah Sin. The 15,000-square-foot restaurant will serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night menus, with an emphasis on desserts, and will also feature a gelato bar and retail space. Style-wise, according to the press release we should think "imaginative world of Willy Wonka meets the trendsetting style of MTV." It's slated to open sometime this fall, we understand.

Monorail Files for Bankruptcy:

As was speculated in this column back in mid-December of last year, the Las Vegas Monorail has now officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Reports say that there will be no interruption to service.

Wynns Officially Divorced - Again:

For the second time in their history, Steve and Elaine Wynn are officially divorced, with records obtained today by The Associated Press showing the split was finalized by a family court judge in Las Vegas on Jan. 5. Specific terms of the divorce were not disclosed but the order says the Wynns have personality conflicts so deep that they are not reconcilable. Elaine Wynn will keep her surname, continuing to be known as Elaine Farrell Pascal Wynn.

2010 WSOP Schedule Released:

Event #1 of the 2010 WSOP, the Casino Employee No-Limit Hold'em tournament, will commence at noon on May 28, with Day 8 -- the penultimate day -- of the Final Table starting at noon on July 17. LVCVA Incentivizes Travel Trade:

New Dining Honors for Vegas:

AAA has added two Las Vegas restaurants, Wolfgang Puck's Cut (Palazzo) and Daniel Boulud Brasserie (Wynn) to its list of Four Diamond eateries in Nevada, bringing the state's total number to 31, or #6 in the nation. The total won't stay at 31 for long, however, since Daniel Boulud Brasserie is scheduled to close this April when its five-year operating agreement with Wynn Las Vegas is up. No word as yet as to what will take its place.

The Showgirls Must Go On:

While Bette Midler's run at Caesars' Colosseum is drawing to a close, with final performances through the end of this month, two of her backing singers are striking out alone and can be seen tonight at 10 p.m. performing at the Freakin' Frog on Maryland Pkwy. Shaynah Steele and Kamilah Marshall will each perform a solo set from their new CDs, backed by band members from Midler's Showgirl troupe. The event kicks off at 8:30 p.m. and is free to attend, but space is limited.

Latest on Wyrick Theater:

According to Monti Rock III's latest Las Vegas entertainment blog entry, there are potential plans to turn the Steve Wyrick Theater in the Miracle Mile Shops into additional retail space, although Wyrick's reportedly still trying to raise additional funds to keep the dream alive. We'll keep you posted.

Boyd CEO Gets AGA Top Spot:

The American Gaming Association, the official trade organization of the the commercial casino entertainment industry, has elected Boyd CEO Keith Smith as chairman. Richard Haddrill, CEO of Bally Technologies, was elected vice chairman.

Nightlife Updates:

It's just been announced that Cherry, the nightclub and topless pool at Red Rock, has closed. It's unclear as yet what will take its place, although Station Casinos stated their intention to preserve it as some kind of nightlife venue. As previously reported in this column, what was formerly Salt Lick BBQ is being converted into a Yard House. Meanwhile, Minus 5 Ice Bar at Mandalay Place has just announced news of a remodel, with 19 tons of new ice added, including a showgirl sculpture, and a $40,000 lighting upgrade, which includes a new laser light show.

More Good News for LV:

Not only is gaming revenue apparently moving in the right direction once more, but for the third month in succession visitation is also up, with an almost 3 percent rise in November. That's the third month in succession to see an increase in visitor volume, suggesting that the corner may have been turned, although a spokesman from the LVCVA tempered the latest stats with the need for caution, maintaining that a few more stable months would need to be clocked up before any concrete conclusions could be drawn with regard to a sustained economic upturn.

Arson Suspected in Downtown Fire:

Arson is suspected in a fire that started around 8 p.m. last night at the abandoned El Cid hotel downtown at 7th St. and Bridger Ave. According to investigators, three separate fires were started in three different rooms in the property, which has long been boarded up but remained a refuge for the homeless. Property managers said they'd contacted the owners, who'd planned to renovate the building, recommending demolition now as the best course of action. The blaze caused an estimated $35,000 in damage.

Casinos End Losing Streak:

For the first time in 23 months, Nevada's casinos have registered a year-over-year increase in gambling win. November numbers show a win of $873.2 million statewide, which is up 4.4%. The Strip increase in win was even greater at 8.3%. The gaming win comes on the back of heavily discounted room rates, with the average daily cost in October 2009 down 14 percent from 2008 to $99.59. Shares in MGM Mirage, Sands Corp., and Wynn were all up this morning following the release of the latest stats.

According to Sen. Harry Reid's office, President Obama is planning to visit Las Vegas in mid-February, with jobs and the economy the likely primary topics of discussion.

Bumper Attendance at CES:

At last some good news for Las Vegas: As predicted by Sands Expo CEO Sheldon Adelson last year, things are looking up for the convention market here, with the annual CES tech show drawing an estimated 120,000 attendees -- around 20,000 more delegates than anticipated and a 6.1 percent increase on last year. Though figures have not yet been released, numbers for the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo were also thought to be up, with an estimated 25,000+ attendees.

Vegas Seeks Increased Revenue from Parking:

The City of Las Vegas is considering using private companies to help increase revenue from parking fees and enforcement to make up the budget deficit. Proposals, which must be presented to the city by Feb. 19, include raising rates and fines or turning over the management of the city's 6,500 parking spaces, which last year generated $2.8 million, to a private company.

Chelsea Handler Caesars Date:

Talk show host and comedian Chelsea Handler announced today that she'll celebrate the release of her third book, Chelsea Chelsea, Bang Bang, with a headlining tour, which make a stop in Las Vegas at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on Saturday, May 29. Tickets, which start at $49.50, go on sale Friday, January 15 at 10 a.m. and are available from the Caesars Box Office and Ticketmaster outlets.

Silver Strike Tournament:

Jan. 29-31, 2010 the Four Queens downtown will host a $10,000* Silver Strike slot tournament. Palace Station has opened the Gambler's Den slot parlor, with more than 200 games with returns above 99%. We gave it a quick look and there's plenty of 9/6 Jacks or Better, 8/5 Bonus Poker, and near full-pay versions of Deuces Wild, Joker Wild, and other games in denoms from 50 cents to $5. Spin at South Point:

On Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays throughout January South Point will give you a spin on a prize wheel when you earn 100 points. It’s also the first of its kind in the hospitality industry to feature user opt-in GPS capabilities, which can customize offers to venues conveniently located near the user. In addition, Caesars unveiled its new "Texpress," feature, a user-friendly mobile phone service designed to fast-track hotel check-in for U.S. guests. The day prior to their arrival, guests text the resort to check in. After arriving at Caesars Palace, Texpress users can by-pass the front desk check-in line and proceed directly to the Bell Desk, where their room keys will be ready and waiting.

CES Wraps:

The 32nd annual Consumer Electronics Show wraps up at 4 p.m. today, freeing up the 100,000-or-so hotel rooms that delegates have been occupying since Thursday. Highlights at this year’s tech-fest included a plethora of new e-readers and related technology, 3-D TVs, and Lady Gaga’s hair.

Comedy Star Heading to Vegas:

Award-winning stand-up comic Jon Stewart, star of Comedy Central’s "The Daily Show," is coming to The Terry Fator Theatre at the Mirage for two nights in February. The shows will take place on Friday, Feb. 5 and Saturday, Feb. 6 at 10 p.m. and tickets, available from the Mirage and Ticketmaster, are priced at $89, $99, and $199, plus tax and service fees.

New Strat Thrill Ride:

The Stratosphere today officially announced details of its new ride, which had been rumored for awhile (see QoD 12/22/09). The newest addition to its tower-top thrill rides will be the world's highest "Skyjump," which enables people to drop 855 feet to the ground at a speed of up to 40 mph, thanks to a patented "descender machine" and harnessed jump-suit. The ride's scheduled to open in April and is priced at $100.

Local Cable Channel to Close:

Las VEgas ONE will cease operations this Sunday. It's no great surprise, following the transfer of its signature show, Huntington Press author Jon Ralston's "Face to Face," to KVBC-TV. The Greenspun Media-owned station (with partners Cox Cable and Channel 8) had been operating for almost 12 years. It's the latest in a series of cuts by the media group that have seen local publications and TV programs axed and the layoffs of numerous members of staff.

Bike Weekend at South Point:

The 19th Annual Motorcycle Auction which, with 500 models for sale, is the largest auction of vintage bikes in the world, continues through Saturday at South Point. Tickets start at $15. The event's taking place in conjunction with the MidAmerica Auctions/Gene Romero's West Coast Championship Flat Track Series today and tomorrow, which features three classes. Green Light for Table Games in PA:

As anticipated, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell yesterday signed Senate Bill 711, which legalizes table games in the state's nine casinos and pledged to get table games "up and running in as many casino venues as possible by July."

Sheri's Cabaret all-nude gentlemen's club has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, citing the economy, reduced tourist numbers, and increased competition for its inability to make the rent. Luxor Bomber Gets Life:

One of the men convicted of planting a deadly pipe bomb in the Luxor parking garage in 2007 was this morning sentenced to life imprisonment. The bomb killed the lover of Omar Rueda-Denvers' ex-girlfriend. Sentencing of co-defendant Porfirio Duarte-Herrera has been delayed until Jan. 28.

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao is Off:

Late last night Manny Pacquiao's promoters declared his prospective bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr. dead after a mediation session failed to resolve the fighters' differences over drug testing. The much-anticipated fight was likely to have been the richest in boxing history and had been touted as a welcome shot in the arm for a Las Vegas still hurting from recent declines in visitation.

John Mayer Coming to MBay:

The seven-time GRAMMY Award-winning Award-winning singer-songwriter player will bring his "Battle Studies" North American tour to the Mandalay Bay Events Center Saturday, March 27. Tickets, priced at $90 and $60 (plus fees), go on sale Saturday, Jan. 16 at 10 a.m.

New Gambling Show for HBO:

TV veteran David Milch ("Deadwood," "John From Cincinatti") has teamed with filmmaker Michael Mann ("Miami Vice," Public Enemies) to produce a pilot for a proposed HBO horse-racing drama series. "Luck" is described as "a provocative look at the world of horse racing and gambling told through a diverse group of characters surrounding a racetrack."

Elaine Wynn Gets $741 Million:

As part of the divorce settlement, Steve Wynn today agreed to transfer control of $741 million worth of his stock in Wynn Resorts Ltd. to his wife Elaine. The transferred shares were previously communal property.

It's a big week for conventions in Las Vegas, with 100,000 delegates expected for the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which kicks off tomorrow, and another 25,000 or so attendees and stars here for the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo. So, we just updated our handy guide to free WiFi hotspots for anyone whose trying to get online without paying through the nose in your hotel. From bars and restaurants to bookstores and hookah lounges, you'll find an array of places all over town where you can keep in the loop for no charge.

New Managing Company for Station?:

According to a report just published in today's Las Vegas Review-Journal, Isle of Capri Casinos could take over management of at least four Station Casinos-owned properties, including Red Rock, Palace Station, Boulder Station, and Sunset Station. Station, which filed for bankruptcy last summer, has until March of this year to file a plan of reorganization with the bankruptcy court; if that plan is rejected, the St. Louis-based operator would step in to manage at least part of the group's assets, via an agreement reached with the lender Deutsche Bank.

Caesars Pool Update:

The additions and renovations to Caesars Palace's pool area, much of which was closed for construction last summer, will be unveiled this March. Apparently, the new "Garden of the Gods" will include five new multi-layer pools (Apollo, Fortuna, Jupiter, and two side-by-sides known as Bacchus), which increase the total pool area to five acres. The amenities include new poolside furniture and 45 state-of-the-art cabanas.

Meet Carey Hart Today:

Motocross star, husband of Pink, and recently voted one of the 10 sexiest people in Las Vegas, Carey Hart will be signing autographs today from 6-8 p.m. at the new Summerlin Pole Position Raceway location, located at 7350 Prairie Falcon Road. PA Votes Today on Table Games:

Yesterday the Pennsylvania Senate approved the passage of a bill legalizing table games; the state House will vote on the measure today. Gov. Ed Rendell has threatened to lay off state workers if he did not receive a bill to sign by Friday.

Vintage Slots at SFO:

San Francisco International Airport is currently hosting a display of vintage gambling devices, on loan from Joe Welch's San Bruno American Antique Museum. "For Amusement Only: Slot Machines and Other Gambling Devices of the Mechanical Age" will be on display at Terminal 3 through May, 2010. Click here for some photos of the machines.

Having heard word from an LVA member, we just called the Golden Gate to check and received confirmation that the venerable 99-cent shrimp cocktail, a staple of our Top Ten Values for many years, has now officially raised its price to $1.99. The price was hiked back in 2008, but since then the downtown delicacy was still available to members of the players club for 99-cents. No more.

Good News for Allegiant:

Shares in the discount Las Vegas airline were up 51 cents, to $48.52 in early trading today, following news that its traffic increased 28.1 percent in 2009, despite the general trend of declining visitation to McCarran International Airport last year.

Peepshow on Hiatus:

The topless revue at Planet Hollywood starring ex-Girl Next Door Holly Madison closed abruptly last night for a two-month hiatus. It's scheduled to reopen March 1.

Gaga Offered Palms Residency:

Following her sold-out shows at the Palms at the end of last year, there's word that owner George Maloof has offered Lady Gaga a residency at the Pearl. The flamboyant singer has yet to decide if she'll accept or not.

Strong Results for Macau Casinos:

Shares of Sands China (the Macau division of Las Vegas Sands) rose by nearly 5 percent today, and those of Wynn Macau were up by over 3.5 percent, following the announcement that gambling revenues in the Asian gambling enclave rose 48 percent from the previous year.

Simon Brunch Upgrade:

The Sunday Brunch at Simon (Palms Place) has been updated for the New Year, with the addition of dishes including savory and sweet crêpes (choose from grilled vegetables and swiss or Nutella with bananas), graham pancakes with whipped butter and maple syrup, and lobster, pulled pork, and steak hash benedicts. The even better news is that the 2010 LVA Member Rewards Book contains a coupon good for free bottomless champagne/Bloody Marys for up to four people (a saving of $16 per person); the brunch is priced at $38.

Beneath the Neon Back in the Media:

Huntington Press author Matt O'Brien's Beneath the Neon is back in the media spotlight, following a big feature by Associated Press writer Oskar Garcia today. Fox News and the New York Times have already picked up on the story of the growing number of homeless people living in the storm drains beneath Las Vegas.

Fezzik Wins:

In an amazing finish LVASports' Fezzik completed his amazing repeat in the most prestigious sports handicapping contest in the world, the LV Hilton's SuperContest. After a 17-week season, it came down to the last quarter of the last game, with Fezzik needing the Tenessee Titans to win by at least 4 points against the Seattle Seahawks. The final score was Titans 17/Seahawks 13, giving Fezzik a half-point victory in the contest. Fezzik becomes the first player in history to win the contest twice, not to mention doing it in successive years. The first prize was $200,000. Downtown on Lockdown:

Las Vegas Blvd. and a number of other streets in the vicinity of the Lloyd D. George federal courthouse building in downtown Las Vegas remain closed following a shooting incident this morning that left one federal court security officer dead and a U.S. Marshal wounded. The perpetrator was fatally shot in the head as he fled the scene.

CES Kicks Off This Week:

The annual Consumer Electronics Show tech fest opens in Las Vegas this Thursday, with 3-D TVs and e-readers expected to be some of the big crowd pleasers this year. The market for digital books is expanding rapidly and you can already purchase many Huntington Press titles in electronic format, either as pdf downloads from ShopLVA.com or from amazon.com for the Kindle.

Bus Fares Rising:

RTC bus fares are set to rise at the end of the week. Single rides will increas by 25 cents to $2, day passes by $1 to $5, and 30-day passes by $5 to $30.

Big Finish in SuperContest:

The last weekend of the LV Hilton's SuperContest will be a dandy. In his quest to win the world's most prestigious handicapping contest two years in a row, LVASports' Fezzik is a half game out of the lead and a half game ahead of third place. Fezzik's card is Bills -6.5, Panthers -7, Buccaneers +3, Patriots +8, and Titans -4. The Titans game is the key match-up, as the leader has the Seahawks on the other side. Free Concerts Downtown:

The Fremont Street Experience concludes its New Year's festivities tonight with "Rock 'N Recovery," a series of free concerts by various tribute bands from 8 p.m.-midnight. The bands performing include Fan Halen, Blasphemous Rumours, Led Zepagain, Aeromyth, and Jimi Hendrix and the Psychedelic Ride.

UFC Viewing and After-Party:

From 7 p.m. tonight Hawaiian Tropic Zone will hold a UFC 108 viewing event, followed by an after-party at 11 p.m. hosted by UFC fighters Roy "Big Country" Nelson and Jake Ellenberger. The cover's $20 and an open bar's available for $50; ladies drink for free from midnight to 1 a.m.

Census Bureau Hiring:

The U.S. Census Bureau is looking to hire two thousand workers in Las Vegas and will be holding an open test on Monday, Jan. 4. The temporary jobs pay $14-$20/hr and will run from now until Sept., 2010, when the census count must be completed. If you're interested in applying, bring two forms of ID to the North Las Vegas City Hall council chambers between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Monday. The ability to speak a foreign language is an asset. The test takes approximately 30 minutes.

Pop Drop:

Nevada registered a population decline of almost 28,000 residents between July 2008 and 2009. It was the first drop in 19 years of monthly record-keeping, and may be the first decline since the 1920's, when Nevada showed a population loss for the decade of 1910 to 1920.
