Mental Shows Close:

Mentalist Luke Jermay has closed both his "Mental" showcase and the new adult variation, "Dirty Mind," which had been performing at O'Sheas, effective immediately.

Palms Hosts Playmate Awards:

Saturday, May 15, Rain nightclub at the Palms will host the Playmate of the Year Awards which will, for the first time, be open to the general public. Robin Thicke's to host and Hef and George Maloof will be there to present the award, with guests White Tie Affair and the Playmate Dancers, plus special guest and honoree Pamela Anderson. Tickets, available from the Palms Box Office or Ticketmaster outlets, are $39 GA or $69 seated.

Harrah's Pub Crawl:

Starting from noon today, Harrah's is hosting a pub crawl involving seven of the bars at its Strip properties, with specials including $2 Mexican beers and margaritas at the Tequila Bar at Bally's, the Piano Bar at Harrah's, the Heart Bar at Planet Hollywood, the Mai Tai Bar at the IP, and Gustav's Bar at Paris, plus $3 Mexican beer specials & 99-cent margaritas at the Burger Joint Bar at the Flamingo and the Sportsbook Bar at Bill's. Kentucky Derby Seminar:

Dan Shapiro, who oversees racing for Lucky's race and sports books, will host a seminar at 6 p.m. this evening at the Plaza to analyze tomorrow's big race and assist bettors. Look out for other Derby-oriented events and promos, which we'll be posting in this column.

Wynn Still Eyeing PA:

In the wake of Steve Wynn's last-minute pull-out from a partnership deal on the stalled Foxwood's Philadelphia casino project, the directors of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board voted unanimously yesterday to have a motion filed to strip the Foxwoods group of its gaming license. Should the $50 million license be up for grabs, Wynn said he would consider bidding for it and that interesting gaming opportunities remain in the state. "We backed out of a deal, rather than backing out of Pennsylvania," stated Wynn in a conference call with analysts and investors Thursday. Las Vegas-based Wynn Resorts Ltd. announced yesterday that it earned $27 million, or 22 cents per share, for the period that ended March 31. That compares with a loss of $33.8 million, or 30 cents per share, a year earlier. Wynn also added to his recent remarks about relocating the company's HQ and speculated that operations could be moved to Macau within as few as four years.

Gay Pride Parade:

The 13th annual Las Vegas Gay Pride Parade takes place downtown this evening, with up to 9,000 people expected to take part. Tomorrow the weekend's celebrations continue with a festival at the Clark County Government Center Rotunda, where there will be two stages and more than 100 vendors.

Estefans Honored:

Latin music legends Emilio and Gloria Estefan were honored today with a song and dance performance inside the Rio's new Crown Theater. Today's festivities come prior to the Grammy Award-winning couple receiving the 48th tribute in the Las Vegas Walk of Stars tomorrow. The ceremony, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 4 p.m. in front of the Flamingo.

Historic Vegas Collectibles to Auction:

Fans of Las Vegas history have an interesting opportunity coming up when the Tropicana, currently in the midst of a major image overhaul, auctions off its old fixtures and fittings at a live auction in San Diego next month. It's currently unclear specifially what treasures will be up for grabs, with a spokesman for the auction merely revealing that it will feature "merchandise ranging from the historic Las Vegas Tropicana Hotel & Casino to general brand name electronics and general merchandise."

Complimentary Comedy:

The Improv at Harrah's celebrates its fifteenth anniversary tomorrow, April 30, with a ticket giveaway to a special free performance if you mention promo code: 15 YEARS at the box office. The free additional show will take place at 3 p.m.

Stoney's Returns:

Stoney's North Forty, which briefly occupied the space now inhabited by Revolver at Santa Fe Station, reopens tomorrow night at its new home located at 5990 Centennial Ctr. Doors open 8 p.m. The original Stoney's on the Strip remains, too.

New Look for Welcome Sign:

Following two incidents of grafitti last year, the famous "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign has again been defaced, but this time it was a deliberate move as part of the LVCVA's latest promotional campaign for the city. Bikini-clad skydivers, Mayor Oscar Goodman, Peepshow star Holly Madison, and others were on hand this morning to reveal the new "Welcome to Camp Vegas" signage, which will remain in place through Friday in an effort to brand Las Vegas as the ultimate "adult summer camp." This marketing offensive comes in the wake of Las Vegas ranking a mere #26 in a survey of America's "most fun cities" released earlier this week by Portfolio.com. New York emerged as the #1 city to have fun in.

Mobile Gaming Co. Recruiting:

Cantor Gaming is looking for "striking, sharp, female ambassadors" to demo its mobile gaming device, eDeck, and pocketcasino products. Auditions will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 3 at BESTAgency (5525 S. Decatur Blvd., Ste. 101). Candidates must be female, at least 21 years old, hold strong English speaking skills, and be equipped with a gaming card. Macau Labor Clampdown:

Today's Wall Street Journal reports that Macau's government is proposing a new law that would restrict the number of nonresident workers on construction projects, insisting that local workers are hired on a 1:1 ratio with non-locals. This could pose a problem to the expansion plans of company's like Sands China Ltd., which needs an estimated 10,000 workers to complete its ongoing projects but anticipates being able to recruit only about 20 percent of them locally.

Date Set for Trekkie Auction:

Julien's Auctions has settled on June 27 as the date for its auction of Star Trek film memorabilia. The sale will take place at Planet Hollywood and will feature items from the 2009 reboot of the Star Trek franchise, starring Hollywood newcomer Chris Pine as the young Captain James T Kirk, plus items separately donated from the private collections of creator Gene Roddenberry and William Shatner, the latter of whom will attend the sale in person.

Windy Weather Continues:

A high wind warning is in effect until 9 p.m. today for the Spring Mountains, the Sheep Range, Red Rock Canyon, and the town of Mount Charleston, with dusty and gusting winds throughout the Vegas valley causing difficult driving conditions and some property damage.

Funeral Set for Slain Nye County Deputy:

A candlelight vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Terrible's Lakeside Casino in Pahrump for Nye County Deputy Ian Duetch, who was shot to death in the parking lot while answering a domestic violence call on Monday. The funeral will take place on Saturday, May 1st at Canyon Ridge Church, 6200 W. Lone Mountain Road in Las Vegas at 9:30 a.m.

Buffet of Buffets Price Bump:

Apparently, long lines of people hoping to take advantage of Harrah's group-wide "Buffet of Buffets" 24-hour pass in Las Vegas has forced them to hike the price by $5 to $34.99 for Total Rewards members, and by a whopping $10 to non-members, in order to "give our guests the service they deserve."

Adelson Eyeing Europe:

Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson said yesterday at the opening of the new Marina Bay Sands casino in Singapore that he'd consider building a Las Vegas-style casino strip in Europe if the opportunity arose, saying that the Las Vegas-strip business model, which marries casino gaming with conventions and leisure, had potential to be replicated in other parts of the world. He predicted that the new $5.5 billion Singapore property would break even within five years.

McCarran Parking Revamped:

Changes instigated at McCarran International Airport raise short-term parking costs but aim to cut the time motorists spend in line on the way out. The new $13 million automated "Express Exit" pay stations elmininate short-term parking meters and allow people to use credit cards or cash to pay for parking. Short-term parking rates are now set at $2 per hour up to $6 for three hours (it was formerly $1.50/hour), plus $3 each additional hour up to $36 per day. Those who are in the garage for less than 15 minutes won't be charged.

Harsh Weather Kicks In:

About 5,000 homes and businesses in the Reno area were left without power today when winds gusting more than 100 mph downed power lines in northern Nevada. As much as a foot of snow is expected in the upper elevations by Wednesday morning.

Station Hearts Seniors:

Station Casinos' 50-Plus Wednesdays promo program is offering a special reward this month. In addition to the regular Wednesday cash giveaways, May's big prize will be a $25,000 "resort gala," where the winner can customize a package and throw a big bash at one of Station's properties. The grand prize drawing will take place at 5 p.m. on May 26.

Allegiant Coming to Twin Falls:

Las Vegas-based Allegiant Airlines has announced that it's introducing twice-weekly nonstop flights from Idaho's Joslin Field, Magic Valley Regional Airport to Las Vegas. The flights will start in mid-June, operating on Fridays and Mondays and offering travelers one-way or round-trip service from Twin Falls. The one-way introductory fares are $29.99, if purchased by May 19 (with some fares as low as $9.99). Prices for tickets purchased after that start at $39.99 one-way.

Strong WInds, Dust Advisory:

A storm moving into the Las Vegas Valley is expected to bring strong winds this afternoon and an air quality advisory has been issued by Clark County officials for this afternoon and Wednesday morning, warning that air in the region could become dangerous for children, the elderly, and people with respiratory diseases.

AIDS Walk a Big Success:

An estimated 8,500 people took part in the 20th annual AIDS Walk Las Vegas downtown Sunday, which raised some $500,000 to benefit southern Nevadans infected with HIV or AIDS. Penn & Teller were the Grand Marshalls for the event.

Las Vegas Cocktail Profiled:

It's just come to our attention that a Las Vegas libation made it into a recent Time magazine feature article about "fat-washed" cocktails, i.e., drinks that contain meat. However, what we assumed would be a homage to the Double Down Saloon's notorious bacon martini, made from bacon-infused vodka, turned out instead to be the recipe for a different bacon martini, namely the one created by Heidi Hinkle of Aria's Sirio Ristorante, which sounds like a variation on a Bloody Mary. Here's the recipe (those olives look good).

New Award Show for Vegas:

After a brief stint in L.A. the Daytime Emmy Awards, held in New York for more than 30 years, are now moving to Las Vegas. Nominations will be announced May 12 and awards will be handed out June 27, but the venue where the event will take place has yet to be specified.

Massive A.C. Casino Job Fair:

This Wednesday, April 28, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. the Atlantic Cape Community College's Charles D. Worthington campus will host Atlantic City's first casino-wide recruitment fair, with the city's entire gaming industry coming together in an effort to recruit local residents to fill positions in culinary, food and beverage, hotel, housekeeping, marketing, security, and dealer operations. Atlantic City currently has a nearly 17 percent unemployment rate.

Doggie Brunch:

It's the most interesting spin we've seen put on Sunday brunch since we attended the bacchanlian High Society bash at the Palms a couple of weeks ago: Now, Coachman's Inn is serving a special "Dog Lovers" Sunday brunch menu, which comes with a complimentary serving of filet mignon or chicken, served with carrots and rice, for your furry friend. Human fare includes steak and eggs, bagels and lox, french toast, and eggs Benedict. "Puppies on the Patio" takes place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sunday and reservations are requested (702/273-4202).

Neil Diamond to Vegas?:

According to rumor, singer Neil Diamond is in talks with Caesars Palace and has been attending big arena shows in Las Vegas, including Garth Brooks at the Wynn and Lionel Ritchie at the Colosseum, presumably as a scouting mission. We'll keep you posted if rumor becomes reality.

Marina Bay Sands Debuts Tomorrow:

Singapore gets its second casino tomorrow with the opening of the $5.7 billion Marina Bay Sands, which features a 7,000-ton cantilevered floating garden called a SkyPark that overlooks Singapore's waterfront from about 200 meters in the air. With the US gaming market still in the doldrums, casino operators are increasingly turning their focus to the east, where Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson predicts "an almost inexhaustible supply" of gamblers from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, India, China, Vietnam, and Australia.

Palminteri Party:

Actor Chazz Palminteri, known for his performance in A Bronx Tale, will be hosting the Kentucky Derby viewing party inside Lagasse's Stadium at The Palazzo next Saturday, May 1. The event starts at 1:30 p.m. and is free to attend. For dining or Stadium seating reservations call 702/607-2665.

McCarran Slips in Rankings:

McCarran International Airport has dropped from 15th to 17th in the list of the world's busiest airports. Its 40.5 million passengers in 2009 was down 8.2% from 2008, causing the decline. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International remained the world's busiest, with nearly 88 million flyers. McCarran is 7th busiest in the U.S.

Strip Club May Reopen:

The Crazy Horse Too will be purchased for $10.5 million by a group from Chicago if it can secure the necessary licenses to reopen. That may be a problem, however, as the club owes the city $2.2 million in unpaid fines and Mayor Oscar Goodman says there will be no grace. Crazy Horse Too was one of Las Vegas' busiest strip clubs before closing when its former owner pleaded guilty to tax evasion.

New Pool Party:

Today sees the launch of TAO Beach's new Sunday Beatport Beach Party, a collaboration with LA's Insomniac party organizers. DJ Chuckie's the first up to DJ, with a raft of talent confirmed through the end of May. Tonight's MMA at Stations:

Station Casinos is offering live viewings of tonight's mixed martial arts card, featuring the main event of Jose Aldo vs. Urijah Faber, for just a $5 cover. The fights will be broadcast, with doors opening at 6 pm, at Santa Fe Station, Palace Station, Green Valley Ranch, and Red Rock.

Adieu Mr Las Vegas:

Wayne Newton's recent run at the Tropicana with his Once Before I Go show ends tomorrow night. What lies in the future for the Wayner remains unclear, although David Saxe has expressed interest in hiring him to emcee his new show at the Saxe Theater in the Miracle Mile Shops.

New Show for Fremont Street:

The Fremont Street Experience Viva Vision canopy has added a new show to its line-up. "The Doors – Strange Days in Vegas" is an all-new tribute to Jim Morrison and The Doors and will perform at 9 p.m. nightly. Doors cover band Mojo Rising will add to the festivities playing hits from the band's iconic catalog from 8–11 p.m. nightly through April 25 on the 1st Street Stage.

Harrah's Shedding Rio:

According to a report in Business Week, Harrah's Entertainment Inc. is seeking to sell the off-Strip Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. Apparently, Starwood Capital Group LLC and Colony Capital LLC are among the companies that are weighing bids for the resort, with sources close to the negotiations reporting that bids are valuing the Rio at about $500 million.

Elvis Project Files for Chapter 11:

FX Real Estate and Entertainment Inc, the company that was planning to build an Elvis-themed property on the 17.71 acres of Strip property that it owns next to Planet Hollywood, filed for bankruptcy protection on Wednesday after defaulting on a $475 million mortgage loan.

Free Classic Movie Screening:

Beginning tonight at 10 p.m., Sunset Station's Club Madrid will be showing a different classic movie for free each week. Tonight it kicks off with American Graffiti; next week Cool Hand Luke is scheduled.

Fantasy Offer:

The topless revue at the Luxor starring Angelica Bridges ("Baywatch," Playboy) has just introduced a new $39 (plus tax and fees) ticket. Previously the cheapest seat was $54.50. This show performs nightly at 10:30 p.m. in the Atrium Showroom. Must be 18+.

Vietnam Gets Casino Resort:

The Canadian development group that won the licence to run the first Las Vegas-style casino in Vietnam has appointed Lloyd Nathan, the president of MGM Mirage global gaming development, as chief executive. The $4.2bn strip-resort complex will be located on beachfront land 130 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City. Asian Coast Development Limited of Canada and MGM Mirage struck a deal to name the property the MGM Grand Ho Tram.

Opening Set for New Theater:

What was formerly the Steve Wyrick Entertainment Complex in the Miracle Mile Shops is now the Saxe Theater, owned by David Saxe of the neighboring V Theater. The venue's set to reopen June 1 with a new original production being written and produced by Saxe. Vegas! The Show will apparently convey the history of Las Vegas entertainment, including classic Vegas-showgirl numbers, odes to the Rat Pack, Elvis, and Tom Jones, and possible roles for such Las Vegas legends as Jerry Lewis, Shecky Greene, and Wayne Newton. Tickets will be priced at $79 and $99, plus tax and fees.

Wynn Looks East:

Steve Wynn's been granting a series of media interviews in the run-up to the opening of the new Encore at Wynn Macau today and cited his disenchantment with President Obama's economic policies is a factor leading him to consider moving his entire corporate HQ to the Chinese gambling mecca. The casino mogul said he'd be focusing future business efforts in Macau and away from Las Vegas: "I don't think the Las Vegas market at the moment beckons a large investment. The economic outlook in the United States, the policies of this administration, which do not favor job formation, do not encourage investment at all."

New Name for MGM Mirage:

As reported in today's R-J, casino giant MGM Mirage is asking shareholders to permit the company to change its name to MGM Resorts International. Company officials were quick dispel any thoughts that this might mean The Mirage is for sale, explaining rather that the proposed identity change is to reflect the diversification of the company into foreign markets and non-gaming properties.

Silverton Bikini Pageant:

This weekend the Silverton goes tropical with the International Bikini Team Aloha State Finals, kicking off Friday evening with a poster signing and meet and greet from 3-6 p.m., followed by the competition, featuring celebrity judges. The first round of the competition will be the Hawaiian/Luau/Tropical Attire round with the top three winners receiving $500. Round two's the bikini contest.

"Stiffs & Georges" Down, Not Out:

Stiffs & Georges blogger David McKee hasn't gone on vacation or abandoned his post. We've been experiencing some increasingly severe technical issues with the S&G blogging software and it's temporarily out of action. Any frustration readers may be feeling is comparable to McKee's own, as he's unable to report on any number of breaking stories in our beloved casino industry. He's still plugging away on his Twitter feed (@stiffsgeorges), so you might trying catching up with him there, especially since he's had some choice words for the proposed change of MGM Mirage to "MGM Resorts International," plus speculation on where Cirque du Soleil's Michael Jackson show might land. (Think "Lance Burton.")

Are we kidding? No. Starting tonight, you can get 5-cent beers on Tuesdays from 9 p.m. to midnight -- and it's not being offered at a dive bar. A nickel buys an 8-ounce cup of Pabst Blue Ribbon, and while there's a $12 food-purchase requirement if you're seated in the dining room or on the patio, there's no additional purchase necessary to get the 5-cent beers at the bar. This ranks as one of the best deals on beer we've ever seen in Las Vegas. The bar is located in The Crystals section at CityCenter.

Michael Jackson Cirque Show:

As had previously been rumored, Cirque du Soleil annouced Tuesday that a new Michael Jackson-themed show will be joining the ranks of LOVE, the Beatles show at Mirage, and Viva Elvis, the newest Cirque show that performs at Aria. Apparently, the production will be a live touring show featuring the songs of the King of Pop starting late next year; the tour will be followed by a permanent production in Las Vegas in 2012 at an as yet unidentified property owned by MGM Mirage (we'll keep our speculation to ourselves at this juncture). The show will be co-owned 50/50 by Cirque and Jackson's estate.

Strat Debuts New Ride:

The long-awaited "Sky Jump Las Vegas" attraction opened this morning at the Stratosphere, with reporters being offered the first chance to make the 855-foot "controlled freefall" plunge off the top of the tower. For members of the public, the jump costs $99, with six-10 jumps scheduled per hour. More information about the ride can be found on the Stratosphere website.

Yard House Hiring:

The popular bar/restaurant chain, which currently operates a venue at Town Square, will begin a recuitment process tomorrow to hire 200 workers for its new venue at Red Rock Resort (in the space formerly occupied by Salt Lick BBQ), which opens June 6. The hiring process is expected to take up to four weeks and May 15's the last day applications will be accepted. The hiring center is located near the Regal Cinemas ticket office and will be open from 10:30 a.m. to noon tomorrow; thereafter regular hours will be Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Applicants need to bring a valid ID.

Latest Opening at Hard Rock:

Today marks the debut of the latest new venue at the Hard Rock, namely the new poolside SKYBAR, the renowned nightlife brand with locations at the Mondrian in Los Angeles and at Shore Club in Miami Beach. As the press release puts it, "Perched above the HRH Beach Club, the day-to-night pool deck creates an exclusive, chic atmosphere that SKYBAR is known for ... Sun-seeking guests enjoy the upper deck by day, while partygoers can escape the club scene to lounge under the stars by night."

Station Casinos Update:

Today's R-J reports on the latest twists and turns in the Station Casinos bankruptcy saga, with the locals gaming group announcing that it plans to submit a $772 million bid to acquire a majority of its assets in bankruptcy court through a newly formed company. Click here for the full story.

Michelle "Bombshell" McGee, the tattoo model/dancer who's been at the center of the recent affair scandal with Jesse James, husband of actress Sandra Bullock, has been booked by Déjà Vu Showgirls gentlemen's club to sign autographs and dance this Friday. A spokesman for the club said she's being paid $5,000 for the engagement. Déjà Vu recently switched from being a fully nude club to topless, meaning it now serves alcohol. Mayweather Money:

After opening as a fairly weighty -250 favorite in his fight against Shane Mosely, money has come in steadily on Floyd Mayweather. The number is now -450 on Mayweather with less than two weeks till the fight.

Cash Crackdown:

In his column in today's LV Review-Journal, John L. Smith writes that the Feds have put strip joints and nightclubs on alert that they expect them to monitor large cash spending more closely. It's a move similar to that imposed on the casinos several years ago that led to the onerous cash-transaction rules and reporting that exist today. Some day in the not too distant future, you may have to fill out a CTR form when you pay for your bottle service.

Free Reggae Concert:

From 4-8 p.m., homegrown band Bonafide will be performing live in Town Square Park to promote their mission of "Coming Together to Make a Better Community." The popular Reggae group has teamed up with HomeAid of Southern Nevada to help put hard working families back in homes by donating 50% of their CD sales to the local charity. The concert is free and open to the public.

As part of its reinvention as a hipper Miami Beach-themed property, the Tropicana is holding open auditions today looking for "attractive, fun, sexy, elegant, personable superstars," according to the ad. Internet Processor Tycoon Arrested:

Australian Daniel Tzvetkoff was arrested in Las Vegas Friday by Federal agents, on charges that he assisted in processing more than $500 million of illegal gambling transactions over the Internet. The founder of Automated Clearing House system and Intabill is facing four charges of bank faud, money laundering, conspiracy to operate and finance an illegal gambling business, and processing electronic funds transfers in violation of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) of 2006. Tzvetkoff's company would allegedly allow U.S. players to transfer money to offshore gambling websites and then would disguise the transactions to U.S. banks so they did not appear gambling related. If convicted on all four counts, he faces a maximum sentence of 75 years in jail.

PHo Clubs Close:

As expected, the troubled Privé nightclub and Living Room ultralounge at Planet Hollywood have closed. Neither club is expected to reopen and no plans for use of the space have been revealed by the casino's new owner, Harrah's.

Pre-Earth Day in Vegas:

The 40th anniversary of Earth day will be celebrated around the world this Thursday, April 22nd, but a couple of Las Vegas' "green" attractions are kicking off the festivities early. Mandalay Bay hosts "Party for the Planet" today from10 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Convention Center Lobby. Recycle your batteries or a cell phone at the Shark Reef Booth – the first 500 recyclers receive a 2-for-1 admission to Shark Reef Aquarium valid until May 25, 2010. Meanwhile, Springs Preserve hosts its annual What on Earth Day event from 10 a.m. To 4 p.m., with family-friendly fun and educational activities, including live entertainment, face painting, a green trade show, roving mascots, and healthy food options. Environmentally themed films will be showing in the Big Springs Theater all day, and the annual Green Dreamers Art and Science Fair will showcase projects created by local students. The event is free to attend.

Icahn Fights Back:

According to an article in today's Press of Atlantic City, billionaire investor Carl Icahn plans to appeal a bankruptcy court ruling earlier this week that gave control of the Trump Entertainment Resorts Inc. casinos to a group of corporate bondholders backed by Donald Trump. "We think there are fundamental errors in the opinion," said Icahn attorney Edward S. Weisfelner.

M Gets Mobile:

Cantor Gaming has announced that it's bringing a new eDeck weekly gaming tournament to M Resort, the newest property in Las Vegas to support mobile gambling devices (the other two being Venetian and Palazzo). From 6-8 p.m. Wednesdays through July 7, M's race and sports book will host Mike's Monster Match-Up with KKLZ Morning DJ Mike O'Brian. The tournament format will utilize the eDeck games including video poker, Texas hold'em, and Caribbean Stud, with $3,700 in cash and prizes. The evening will consist of four, 30-minute rounds with 25 players per round. Gilley's Opens:

Gilley's Saloon, Dance Hall and Bar-B-Que has returned to the Las Vegas Strip after a hiatus following the closure of the New Frontier. The new Gilley's, located at Treasure Island, opens tonight and is complete with a mechanical bull, although we've heard on the grapevine that it's not as powerful as the old one was. Try it out and let us know!

Trump to Sell Marina:

Following the news earlier this week that the alliance of bondholders and former owner Donald Trump would be leading the casino impresario's Trump Entertainment Resorts out of bankruptcy comes word that they'll attempt to sell the Trump Marina in order to successfully keep operations going. If a broken deal with New York developer Richard Fields can't be revived, the company will actively begin seeking another buyer. A spokesman for the company also said that they will begin seeking opportunities in other gaming markets to lessen their dependence on Atlantic City, pending the sale of Trump Marina.

Harrah's Job Fair Swamped:

As many as 7,000 job hopefuls showed up at the Rio Hotel by mid-afternoon today for the Harrah's job fair, from which the company was hoping to fill 125-full time and 375 temporary, on-call, and part-time positions among its Las Vegas properties. The turnout is an indication of the ongoing unemployment problem here: in 2006, at the last similar event, 1,800 people showed up to fill 550 positions.

New Eatery for Hard Rock:

Johnny Smalls, a new collaboration between Hard Rock and Dolce Group (which already operate Rare 120 at the property), has debuted. The casual restaurant and bar, located next to Vanity nightclub in the new HRH Tower, features a menu of 50 shareable dishes encompassing Spanish tapas, Asian dim sum, Italian antipasti, Mediterranean mezze, Mexican antojitos, classic American starters, and "zesty original skewers," all in the $6-$12 range. Johnny Smalls is open from 11 a.m. for lunch and dinner Saturday and Sunday starting and for dinner only Wednesday through Friday. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

Vegas Bags Big Travel Show:

Las Vegas has been picked as the site for the 2011 Global Travel & Tourism Summit, an international tourism evemt expected to attract government and industry leaders from around the world. The annoucement came in the wake of the LVCVA voting to spend $1.5 million to host the May 15-19 meeting, which will be held at Aria.

According to the Associated Press Economic Stress Index, which calculates scores based on factors including job loss, foreclosures, and personal bankruptcies, Nevada currently ranks #1 Most Stressed State in the U.S. Three Nevada counties are listed in the top 20 most economically stressed counties with a population of at least 25,000, with Lyon County ranking #2 on the list, Nye County#10, and Clark County #17.

New Hotel to Open this Summer:

In spite of the economic downturn that's hit Las Vegas accommodations particularly hard, the Siegel Group today announced that their new Rumor property (the former St Tropez, located at Harmon and Paradise), will open this summer as part of their "Boutique Chic Retreats" brand that also includes the Artisan Hotel. The property will feature 150 suites, many featuring patios or private balconies, an "ultra-lounge welcome" with concierge-style check-in, and a "cool pool."

New Nightclub for Rio:

Nightlife impresario Darin Feinstein, who purchased the famous Viper Room from Johnny Depp, will open the new Crown Theater and Crown Nightclub at the Rio this summer in the former 3121 space where Prince performed. The 900-capacity venue will feature a mix of live concerts and themed nightlife events.

Trump Triumphs in A.C.:

A U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge has chosen a group of corporate bondholders and Donald Trump to buy the the real estate mogul/reality TV star's three former Atlantic City casinos out of bankruptcy, ending a 14-month battle with rival developer Carl Icahn, who completed his purchase of the $486 million mortgage on Trump Entertainment Resorts earlier this month. While Judge Judith Wizmur acknowledged that Icahn's business plan was more feasible, in that it would eliminate the company's debt, she sided with the Trump-bondholder plan because it will provide at least a partial recovery for the investors and would enable the Trump Taj Mahal, Trump Plaza Hotel, and Trump Marina to retain the iconic name of their original owner, who'll get a 10 percent stake under the winning proposal.

Steve Wynn Fights Back:

In one of the more bizarre stories of the day, Steve Wynn is involved in a war of words - via TMZ -- with "Girls Gone Wild" producer Joe Francis, who's currently in court over the $2 million in unpaid casino debt that he owes Wynn. Harrah's Job Fair:

New Resort for Macau:

Casino operator Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd. has secured a six-year, $1.13 billion loan from seven banks to complete the construction of its resort in Macau. The company had slowed the pace of construction on its $1.8 billion Galazy Macau property due to the economic downturn and slowdown in tourist spending, but the upsurge in Macau gaming revenues has put the project back on track and the project is now scheduled to open in early 2011, with a possible "soft opening" as soon as the end of this year.

Lake Las Vegas Seeks to Sue Investors:

According to today's Las Vegas Sun, the bankrupt Lake Las Vegas development is seeking court permission to hire a leading Dallas law firm to file fraud lawsuits against former investors, including four Texas billionaires, claiming they wrongly drained the property of nearly half a billion dollars in equity and contributed to the bankruptcy. Wind and Wave Warning:

The National Weather Service has issued an advisory warning of strong winds that could make boating dangerous on area lakes and driving difficult in the mountains until 8 p.m. today. The winds are moving in ahead of a low pressure system that will bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Monday, while high winds are in effect at Lake Mead today, creating dangerous boating conditions with very choppy waters and large waves that could capsize or swamp small boats, forecasters said.

Getting High at Cosmo:

An article in Saturday's LV Review-Journal touts the views that will be available from the Cosmopolitan rooms and restaurants when it opens. The rooms in the 50-story building will reportedly have open-air balconies looking onto the Strip. It's tall; we can see the top of Cosmo jutting up over Bellagio from our offices.

Tax Grab:

Every day until April 15, you can swipe your club card at the Orleans to win prizes up to $1,040. It's one of the few income tax-related promotions we've seen this year, but expect a few more may pop up in the next week.

Wynn Win:

How much does Steve Wynn make in a year? According to a report filed with the SEC, Wynn's 2009 "pay package" totaled $8.39 million, made up of $2.95 million in salary, a $4.06 million bonus, and $1.37 million in perks. On top of that, Wynn holds about a 9% stake in Wynn Resorts.

Dayclub Debuts:

NOVE Italiano in the Fantasy Tower at the Palms hosts the debut of its new Sunday afternoon "dayclub" High Society from 1 p.m. today, which apparently will feature cocktails, brunch, entertainment, fashion, music, and more. Table reservations are strongly recommended -– call 702/942-6800.

Tao Tops Again:

Restaurant and Institutions magazine has ranked TAO at the Venetian the nation’s top-grossing non-chain restaurant in 2009 for the fourth year in a row. Punctuating its dominance, Tao's sales were more than double that of the second-place restaurant, New York City's recently closed Tavern on the Green.

Party Out at the Lake:

Sonrisa Grill is celebrating two years at The Village Lake Las Vegas with food, music, and giveaways today from 4 p.m. Guests can enjoy their first margarita free and complimentary hors d’oeuvres with their dinner to celebrate. Sonrisa Grill’s South-of-the-Border, which is also being marked by the addition of a spicy prawn quesadilla, carne con chili, and a chili margarita to the menu. At 10 p.m. local jazz artist Paris Red will be performing lakeside for the free "Jazz on the Lake" concert.

New Farmers Market:

There's a new monthly farmers market kicking off today at Floyd Lamb Park (9200 Tule Springs Road) from noon – 4 p.m. Hereafter the market will take place on the third Sunday of the month from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. There's a $1 admission charge if you're on foot, or $6 per car.

Stampede in the Park:

It's the culmination of the three-day Stampede 2010 taking place at the Clark County Shooting Park (11357 N. Decatur), a cowboy action shooting event with participants dressed in Old West garb, culminating in a banquet and poker tournament at Boulder Station. The event kicks off at 10 a.m. and is free to attend and the tournament's at 10 p.m. with a $45 buy-in.

Free Pie:

The El Cortez casino downtown in offering a free slice of Marie Callender's fresh strawberry pie today from noon – 6 p.m. served gameside while you play.

Alt. Health Expo:

There's a free alternative health expo from noon – 6 p.m. today at La Quinta on Paradise Rd. (just north of Flamingo) with natural health practitioners, prizes, entertainment, and healthy snacks.

Buffet Clarification:

We just received confirmation from Planet Hollywood that the new Harrah's Buffet of Buffets Pass is valid at all seven participating properties, so you can have breakfast at the Rio, lunch at Caesars, and dinner at Planet Ho if you so desire. And, since it's valid for a full 24 hours, they also tipped us off that "you could even sneak in a fourth meal, if you plan it right."

Tonight's the grand opening (media event) for tattoo legend Mario Barth's new King Ink studio at The Mirage, which also features a cocktail lounge by the Light Group. For the first time in Las Vegas, ink fans will be given the chance to book an appointment with Barth himself, skipping the typical two-year wait list.

Planet Hollywood Clubs Lose Lease:

After months of controversy and speculation, it's finally official that the bankrupt Privé nightclub and the Living Room ultralounge at Planet Hollywood are losing their license, as reporte by the Las Vegas Sun. There's no word as yet as to when (or if) they will close, although it seems likely.

Big Buffet News:

Harrah's has just announced, via each property's Twitter, that as of Monday, April 12, all of its Las Vegas propeties that have buffets will be offering an all-day pass for $29.99. This includes the Carnival World Buffet at the Rio, Flavors at Harrah's, Paradise at the Flamingo, Emperor's Buffet at Imperial Palace, Le Village Buffet at Paris, Lago Buffet at Caesars Palace, and the Spice Market Buffet at Planet Hollywood.

Gaga Tix:

Tickets for Lady Gaga's Aug. 13 concert at the MGM Grand Garden Arena go on sale tomorrow at 10 a.m. and are available from all Ticketmaster outlets and the MGM Grand box office and Web site. They start at $49.50 (plus taxes and fees) and purchases are limited to eight per person.

Abrupt About-Face for Wynn:

Following reports earlier this week (see Today's News April 6, 2010) of Steve Wynn's enthusiastic delivery of design drawings three weeks ahead of schedule, comes news today that he's pulling out of any involvement in Foxwoods stalled Philadelphia casino project. "We are fascinated by the legalization of full gaming in Pennsylvania and stimulated by the opportunity that it presents for Wynn Resorts, but this particular project did not, in the end, present an opportunity that was appropriate for our company," commented Wynn.

New Owner for Wyrick Theater:

According to Mike Weatherford's latest column in the R-J, magician Steve Wyrick's theater in the Miracle Mile Shops, that's stood empty since last December (despite the entertainer's avowed intention to reopen), finally has a new owner in the shape of longtime MMS resident David Saxe, who owns the V Theater. The Saxe Theater should be up and running by June 1 and its new owner aims for it to have its own identity, marketed separately, rather than cannibalizing his successful product at V.

More Traffic Trouble:

Following yesterday afternoon's serious accident that blocked I-15 traffic comes more trouble on the Interstate: It was just reported (at approx. 10:30 a.m.) that an accident on the southbound I-15 near Tropicana Blvd. has caused Nevada Highway Patrol to close multiple lanes in the area, resulting in long delays. Drivers are urged to use alternate routes.

Vegas Chefs on TV:

Some of Las Vegas' top chefs will be competing in the season premiere of Bravo's "Top Chef Masters" tonight. The Season 2 kickoff features two chefs from Mandalay Bay -- Susan Feniger of Border Grill and Rick Moonen of RM Seafood -- plus David Burke of The Venetian and Ludo Lefebvre, who helped open Lavo in the Palazzo before moving to L.A. The episode challenges the chefs to create a meal using only ingredients from a gas station convenience store and prepare a romantic aphrodisiac dinner for a couple out on their first date.

Strip Casinos Rebounding:

Finally some good news for Nevada gaming industry, with regulators announcing that the gambling win was up almost 14 percent statewide this year to almost $947 million, up over $100 million compared to the same month in 2009. Most of this increase was driven by the Strip, where the casino win was up a massive 33 percent. The news wasn't so good elsewhere, however, with the Board tallying a decline in the rest of Clark County. There were modest increases in Washoe and Elko counties. Both the Super Bowl and Chinese New Year are credited with the boost in February's revenues.

Fatal Crash Closes Freeway:

The three northbound lanes of the I-15 are currently closed between (we think) the 215 and Sahara Ave., due to a fatal crash involving a motorcyle and a semi-truck that took place at approximately 4 p.m. A second accident at the I-15 and Valley View exit at the Spaghetti Bowl is making that freeway a no-go zone, if you can possibly avoid it, and is also slowing traffic on the US-95. Three More Pa. Casinos Get Table Games:

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board today approved the petitions of three more casinos, including Mount Airy Casino, Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course,and Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem, bringing the total to five. Operators of Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs and the Parx Casino/Philadelphia Park Racetrack gained Board approval of their petitions to operate table games last month.

Aria Pool Debuts Tomorrow:

Liquid, the pool complex at CityCenter's Aria hotel, debuts tomorrow with a performance by DJ sensation Tiesto, who played at Haze last weekend and is currently on a world tour. The event begins at 11 a.m. and as far as we can tell, there's no cover. The press release makes no mention of an admission charge and an email to the Light Group has yet to be answered.

Full Tilt and Top Poker Pros Under Investigation:

It's been reported that UK-based Full Tilt Poker, one of the largest online poker rooms, and top poker professionals Chris "Jesus" Ferguson and Howard Lederer, who are closely associated with the site, are currently under investigation from a federal grand jury in Manhattan looking into whether the site has broken any gambling and money-laundering laws. Both players have filed a motion to dismiss the civil case but they have yet to address the allegations at this point; a lawyer representing them both declined to comment on the case.

Mixed News from Airlines:

Virgin Atlantic's announced that it will increase its service between Las Vegas and the U.K. next year, with the launch of twice-weekly flights between McCarran International Airport and Manchester, starting in April 2011. This will bring the total of weekly direct flights to nine, including daily flights to and from London's Gatwick Airport. Meanwhile, Florida-based Spirit Airlines announced today that it will charge as much as $45 each way for a carry-on bag starting Aug. 1 (personal items like purses and laptops that fit under the seat will remain free). The controversial move is in an effort to persuade people to ditch carry-ons and check their bags, which the airline hopes will simplify and speed up the boarding process. Most Expensive Dessert in the World Up for Grabs:

Serendipity 3, which celebrated its first anniversary on the Las Vegas Strip yesterday, is now also on target to sell its 100,000th Frrrozen Hot Chocolate by the end of this month. The lucky guest to purchase the signature dessert will receive a $1,000 Gold Opulence Sundae, first created to celebrate the original New York venue's Golden (50th) Anniversary in 2006 and dubbed the "most expensive dessert ever created" by Guinness World Records. Here's a description: "Five scoops of the richest Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream infused with Madagascar vanilla and covered in 23K edible gold leaf, the sundae is drizzled with the world's most expensive chocolate, Amedei Porceleana, and covered with chunks of rare Chuao chocolate. Sands Back in Action in Pa:

Las Vegas Sands Corp says it will resume construction next month on the promised but stalled hotel component of its Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem in Pennsylvania. A company official says the 300-room hotel is now slated to open in May of 2011. The unfinished events center and shopping mall, which were also promised as part of the Bethlehem casino package, remain on ice.

Opening Date Set for Cosmo:

The CEO of the recently renamed (slightly) Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas says the $3.9 billion property will open in mid-December, with about one-third of its rooms delayed until July 2011. In addition to a casino, its amenities will include 13 restaurants, a spa, nightclub, retail stores, and 150,000 square feet of meeting and convention space. It's likely to be the last major addition to the Strip in a long while, with projects like Fountainebleau and Echelon indefinitely on ice.

A.C.'s Oldest Casino in Jeopardy:

Resorts Atlantic City, the oldest casino in the New Jersey gaming jurisdiction, is suffering from "severe cash shortages" that could jeopardize operations while it seeks a new owner, according to a quarterly tax statement. Although a spokesman for the property said yesterday that they were in no danger of folding, the New Jersey Casino Control Commission reported Monday that Resorts suffered an $18 million gross operating loss in 2009, including a $10.9 million operating loss in the fourth quarter, when severe snow storms impacted the already depressed Atlantic City gaming market.

Luxor in Wrangle Over Liquidity:

According to today's LV Sun, the Luxor's embroiled in a legal battle over the name of its Liquidity bar, which opened in 2007. A Florida businessman is claiming he obtained a federal trademark in 2008 for the word "Liquidity" for use in the sale of red wine; attorneys for Luxor countered last week with a federal lawsuit, claiming Thomas Weldon intentionally made false statements to the United States Patent and Trademark Office to obtain his registration for the Liquidity mark.

Wynn Moves Forward in Philly Ahead of Schedule:

Steve Wynn yesterday delivered sketches for the stalled Foxwoods casino in South Philadelphia that he intends to take over, a full three weeks ahead of schedule. He said he'd designed the property personally to echo his second Macau casino, due to open later this month, and dispelled any conceptions that this would be any poor relation to his other properties. "We don't have a down-market brand," said the casino mogul. The sketches that Wynn shared with the mayor apparently show a low-slung limestone building with red canopies, a fountain in front, shrubs, and flowering landscaping. "I call it classical elements except with contemporary sensibilities," Wynn said, and explained that his design separates the gaming areas from other amenities, with the aim of making it a locals-friendly destination for dining and entertainment "without having to deal with the din of slot machines." He also stressed that the project needs to keep moving forward and needs a green light from regulators by September.

IRS Clamps Down on Strip Clubs:

The so-called "Taxi Wars" have been taking place unofficially for a long time, with some gentlemens' clubs paying $100,000 plus a week for customers, while others that refuse to pay exoribitant back-handers to drivers find their clubs languishing for lack of business. Now, the IRS has finally become involved and their clampdown is threatening a major shake-up in clubland, with ramifications that ripple far beyond the skin scene. Free Shuttle for Lake Las Vegas:

Judging from reports we heard from a colleague who was out at the Lake at the weekend and said it's already looking like a ghost town, with stores closing right and left, this may well be too little too late, but it's just been announced that MonteLago Village Resort will now be offering a complimentary daily shuttle service to and from the Las Vegas Strip. The Resort's partnered with Loews Lake Las Vegas, the one surviving hotel property at the Lake once the Ritz-Carlton closes next month. Guests can be picked up at the front door of the Resort's Viera building and dropped off at the pick-up location on the Strip at Planet Hollywood. Shuttles will depart three times daily, leaving the Lake at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 5 p.m.; pick-up times from the Strip are 1:45 p.m., 5:45 p.m., and 10:45 p.m.

Catch the NCAA Final in 3D:

Galaxy Theaters at the Cannery Casino will be broadcasting tonight's NCAA Championship Game between Duke and Butler live in 3D. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and tickets are $18 per person. In addition to popcorn, soda, and the usual concessions, beer will also be available for purchase for guests aged 21+.

Burton to Quit Monte Carlo:

Master Magician Lance Burton is curtailing his contract at the Monte Carlo five years early, and will end his 14-year run in his custom-built theater this Labor Day. While the Las Vegas Sun reports that the news has sent "shock waves through the Strip entertainment and magic communities," it comes as no surprise to us. We have an MRO coupon for Lance's show, which we were unable to include in the Member Rewards Book, compiled at the end of last year, on account of being told by a source extremely close to the show that its future was uncertain after the end of May. A different, but equally close source, who we happened to run into last night as this story was breaking, told us that this is not necessarily the end of Burton's Las Vegas career and that it's possible he will move to another Strip property (one in particular was cited, but we cannot disclose its identity at this time). The break with his current home was apparently caused by dissatisfaction with Monte Carlo's management, not because he no longer wishes to perform here.

Happy Easter:

Easter specials are running all over town in the buffets and restaurants. South Point is awarding 5X points on slots and 2X points on video poker. At Silverton it's 9X and 3X.

Total Rewards Up at Planet:

Planet Hollywood is now on the Harrah's Total Rewards players club system. If you have Planet Hollywood points, they should be converted.

Targeting Tiger:

With the Masters golf tournament this week the setting for the return of Tiger Woods, expect a lot of Tiger-related betting lines. One of the early propositions from the English betting houses: You can bet [Tiger's wife] Elin will make an appearance taking odds of 200-1. Despite his problems, Woods is still the betting favorite going in at 4-1.

Duke and Butler:

Semi-final favorites Duke and Butler were winners yesterday and will square off in Monday's NCAA Basketball Championship final. Duke is a 7-point favorite and the game total is 129.

Final Four Lines:

With less than an hour till tip-off of the first Final Four game, Butler is a solid -1.5 favorite over Michigan St., after the line opened a pick (no points). The total is 126. In the second game, Duke is -2.5 over West Virginia, with the total 130.5.

2010 Wine Walk Kicks Off:

The Village at Lake Las Vegas kicks off the 2010 Wine Walk and "Jazz on the Lake" series tonight from 7-10 p.m., with wine tastings and lakeside jazz. Tickets for the Wine Walk are $30 per person or $50 for two, with proceeds benefiting New Vista Community.

Women's Expo:

From 10 a.m.-5 p.m. today, Red Rock hosts the Las Vegas Women's Expo, with over 100 local vendors from the realms of fashion, shopping, cosmetics, spa and beauty treatments, food, home decor, and more. There will be hundreds of prizes given away throughout the day, including an Easter basket valued at $2,000 and a diamond necklace. VP Nugget:

On Fridays and Saturdays in April, Jerry's Nugget is paying double for royals on all quarter and dollar video poker games. Playing the 9/6 JoB quarter games and adding in the slot club cash back and comps comes out to a 102.2% return, which is up around a $20-per-hour return for fast players.

Bachelorette Auction:

Tonight Ghost Bar at the Palms is the scene of the 3rd Annual Smokin' Hot Bachelorette Party, hosted by Holly Madison, wtih 10 date packages up for grabs, including with July 2008 Playboy Playmate Laura Croft. Doors at 5:30 p.m., $50 cover, which includes free drinks and appetizers. Proceeds will go to benefit the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth.

Icahn Goes All In:

Billionaire investor Carl Icahn has bought the remaining half of the $500 million mortgage on the Trump Entertainment Resorts Inc. casinos, for which he's locked in combat with Trump Entertainment bondholders backed by the Donald himself. A bankruptcy court judge is due to announce by April 15 who will be victorious. Meanwhile, in Las Vegas Donald Trump has secured long-term financing for the non-gaming Trump International hotel-resort in the form of $190 million from German-based Hypo Real Estate Holdings AG, which helps lower the $560 million hotel's mortgage payments and is being viewed by ananlysts as one of the first positive signs for Las Vegas since the economic meltdown.

Hooters Bust:

According to a report in today's R-J, the owner of Hooters Casino Hotel in Las Vegas says he has "substantial doubt about our ability to continue as a going concern," amidst recurring operating losses and an accumulated deficit. The company lost $3.8 million in the quarter ended Dec. 31 and, having used all of its credit line, is now dependent on cash flow for expenses. And Hooters isn't the only one in trouble. Herbst Gaming Inc. also reported substantial losses for the second year running, as did the Las Vegas Hilton.

More Good News for PA:

Figures released today by the Pennsylvania State Gaming Control Board show that slot revenue was up by 29% during March of 2010 compared to the same month the previous year. This comes on the back of slot revenues in the state having overtaken those of Atlantic City for the first time earlier this year, ahead of the imminent legalization of table games, which are expected to provide another significant boost Pennsylvania's gaming revenues.

Morgan Stanley Abandons A.C. Casino:

Morgan Stanley announced yesterday that it's pulling out of the $2 billion Revel casino in Atlantic City, a project into which it has already sunk $1.2 billion. The company, which owns more than 90 percent of the ocean-themed property on the Boardwalk, said it's prepared to take "a substantial loss." While no reason was given for the pull-out, the decision comes ahead of New Jersey casino regulators' requirement that top Morgan Stanley officials submit extensive personal and financial information next week as part of the process to determine if they would qualify to hold a casino license. It has yet to be decided whether the property will be sold in a direct sale or via auction; China's Import/Export Bank has for some time been linked to the project and Revel's CEO says they are "very close" to a deal with the bank to secure the remaining $1 billion needed to finish the half-built project.

Noodle Exchange Back in Action:

After a brief closing for some repairs, the Noodle Exchange at the Gold Coast is operating again. We'd speculated in the April Las Vegas Advisor that the closing might be permanent, but we were wrong on this one. We're glad we were -- Noodle Exchange is one of our favorite casino-based Asian restaurants.

More States Probe MGM Mirage:

The Illinois Gaming Board has announced that it will be investigating MGM Mirage, following New Jersey's findings that the company's Macau partner, Pansey Ho, has links to Chinese organized crime. In the wake of the New Jersey announcement came word that Mississippi is now also reviewing the report, while Michigan is reviewing the company's gaming license. MGM Mirage owns a 50 percent stake in the Grand Victoria Casino, a riverboat casino in Illinois, plus a 50 percent stake in the MGM Grand Detroit. In Mississippi, the company's holdings include the Beau Rivage and Gold Strike Tunica properties. Speaking on behalf of the company, spokesman Alan Feldman said, "We're ready to provide whatever additional information they may request."

Suspicious Package Closes Block Downtown:

11:41 a.m.: Police have blocked several downtown streets after finding a suspicious package and are asking residents to avoid the Las Vegas Academy near Las Vegas Blvd. and Carson while they try and determine if the package is dangerous. Currently, Las Vegas Blvd. at Carson is closed, along with 8th and Bridger, 7th and Bridger, and 7th and Carson.

Open Casting Call for The Apprentice:

This just in, somewhat belatedly, via Las Vegas Weekly : Donald Trump is recruiting contestants for the next series of "The Apprentice," and today there's an open casting call at Trump Interantional. It started at 9 a.m., so it might be too late to get down there (we're not sure), but if so, all is not lost: You can also apply by e-mailing ginacasting@yahoo.com. Include a recent photo, an updated resume, and a personal and professional biography detailing how the recession has affected your life.

China Takes Over Defunct Harrah's Project:

According to Bloomberg, Chinese state-owned companies will finance and build a $2.5 billion, 1,000-acre beach resort and casino in the Bahamas that was originally planned by Harrah's Entertainment Inc. According to plans, the Baha Mar Resort in Nassau will include 3,000 rooms, a 100,000 square foot casino, and a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. Harrah's pulled out of the project in 2008, saying it was taking too long to organize.
