Chill at Caesars this Weekend:

Nevermind the BBQ; Caesars Palace is taking an innovative approach to July 4 weekend and converting the Roman Plaza area behind Serendipity 3 into an "ice palace" for two days, featuring snowboarding and skiing on a four-story snow jump. Apparently, professional snowboarders and skiers will be on hand to give demos and there will be a temporary walk-through ice lounge, all sponsored by Coors Light's aluminum pints. Cosmo Opening Date Announced:

The 2,995-room Cosmopolitan will welcome its first guests December 15, 2010, it was announced today, and is accepting reservations.

WSOP Update:

Blair Rodman's second report from the trenches at the 2010 WSOP just went live at LVAPoker.com, with some interesting insights, amusing anecdotes, and a personal message for WSOP Tournament Director Jack Effel (so, please tell him to check it out if you see him before Blair does!)

Sahara and Decatur Re-opened:

Metro has determined the suspicious device found in a truck after a routine traffic stop on Sahara and Decatur to be safe. All traffic has been re-opened.

Current Poll Neck and Neck:

The current LVA Reader Poll, asking which recent victim of the recession you'll miss the most, is almost tied, with two very different options battling for the number one spot. The poll closes at midnight, when a new one goes live, so get your vote in if you haven't already.

Jerry Lee Lewis Rescheduled:

The Jerry Lee Lewis concert originally scheduled for this Wednesday, June 30 at Crown Theater at the Rio, is being rescheduled to a date this fall to coincide with the release of Lewis' latest studio album "Mean Old Man," due for release August 31. Tickets for the original show will be honored for the rescheduled date, which will be announced soon, plus Crown is offering those guests with original tickets a free round of drinks the night of the rescheduled show, as well as comped entry on to see the Johnny Cash tribute band Cash'd Out on July 1 - just show your ticket for entry. Those ticketholders who wish to receive a refund can do so at the original point of purchase.

Pretty in Pink at Lavo:

Pretty in Pink actress Molly Ringwald hosts at Lavo nightclub tonight to promote her new book, Getting the Pretty Back. Dress in pink for pink cocktail open bar; the largest girl "pink posse" has the chance to win autographed copies of the book, Sephora gift cards, and table/bottle service with a bottle of rosé. Doors at 11 p.m; cover's $20 for men, $10 for ladies, free for locals.

Saraha and Decatur Shut Down:

Police have evacuated businesses and closed part of the intersection at Sahara and Decatur due to the discovery of "something suspicious" in a vehicle. Avoid the area if possible (posted 10:45 a.m.)

Traffic Snarl on Strip:

The Southbound lanes of Las Vegas Blvd south of Flamingo are currently restricted by construction barriers and we understand traffic's been at a standstill, so avoid the area for the time being if at all possible (posted at 4:25 p.m.)

The star-studded Tournament of Champions event at the WSOP is down to the final 19 players, with two Huntington Press authors in still in the mix. Annie Duke is currently the short stack with 13,800 to leader Huck Seed's 74,000, but Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier (Kill Everyone) is still definitely in contention in the #8 spot with 50,100. Go ElkY!

Boyd Program Goes Nationwide:

Boyd Gaming Corporation today announced that it will finally extend its player loyalty program to all its properties, which will replace the "Club Coast" name previously used in Las Vegas at the Gold Coast, Suncoast, Sam's Town, and Orleans. To celebrate, Boyd is staging a giveaway of up to $3.75 million in slot dollars during the first week of July. The move will bring the number of casinos in the program to a total of 13 nationwide.

Celebrity Sale Brings in Big Bucks:

A Swarovski-crystal-encrusted glove worn by Michael Jackson fetched $192,000 at the Julien's Live auction that took place at Planet Hollywood over the weekend. It was one of 240 lots that brought in close to 2 million dollars, with other high-ticket items including a 1954 x-ray of Marilyn Monroe's chest that went for $45,000 (well above the estimated $800 to $1,200), a lock of Elvis' hair ($20,000), and a dress worn by Cher on a 1975 episode of her TV show ($26,250).

Vegas Cast on Emmys:

The Las Vegas company of The Lion King performs today on the daytime Emmy Award show, hosted by Regis Philbin, at 9 p.m. EST on CBS (on the West Coast, tune-in at 9PM PST-tape delay).

Bowling Showdown:

Leading PBA pro bowler Chris Barnes and Kelly Kulick, the first female PBA Champion, are going pin-for-pin in a live public shoot-out at the Tony’s Pizza Family Bowling Day hosted by the Smith's located at N. Durango and Elkhorn today from noon till 4 p.m. Patrons will have the opportunity to compete against the pros on the famous "Fast Lane" for the chance to win free Tony’s pizza and other prizes.

New Show Opens:

Vegas! The Show opens tonight in the Saxe Theater in the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood. Tickets start at a pricy $96. The show features one of Las Vegas' lounge super-groups, Santa Fe and the Fat City Horns (formerly just Santa Fe). The band is also about to return to a weekly gig at the Palms.

USA Favored vs. Ghana:

The United States is a small -135 favorite to advance over Ghana in today's World Cup match. The total is 2 (goals). Best viewing spots are the British pubs and Lagasse's Stadium at Palazzo, though Lagasse's will likely be packed.

Checkpoint Planned:

Las Vegas police said they will conduct a drunken driving checkpoint this weekend. The checkpoint will start Saturday at 7 p.m. and last until 3 a.m. Sunday. It will be near Flamingo Road and Rainbow Boulevard.

Strip Club Closed:

The Velvet Lion gentlemen's club has closed. No future plans for the club have been announced. It's just the latest development in the ever-changing Las Vegas adult-entertainment scene, which we cover in our book Topless Vegas, soon to be released as a pocket guide.

The Moment We've All Been Waiting For:

Apparently, UFC announcer Bruce Buffer is opening a new high-limit poker room and lounge at the Luxor. It kicks off on July 2 with a $10,000 guaranteed celebrity tournament with a $125 buy-in. Kardashians Taking Vegas:

The socialite sisters have apparently teamed with TLK Fusion, BRAVADA International, and the Mirage to launch some kind of retail entity at the Strip property. It sounds as if it will be a women's fitness-branded store, but details remain vague at this point; more information is due to be released on Monday, so watch this space.

Progress at Lady Luck:

According to an article in today's R-J, following approval from the Las Vegas Planning Commission this week the expansion and renovation plans at the Lady Luck are moving forward, with construction due to start as early as the beginning of 2011. Planned upgrades include the addition of a meeting space and pool deck on top of the existing casino building, a new spa and fitness room, room upgrades, new restaurants, and an entertainment venue.

HAZ-Mat Spill Closes Wynn Road:

Wynn Road at Tropicana is currently closed* due to an accident involving a truck carrying cleaning chemicals. Clark County Fire Department is on the scene accessing the situation. *This item was posted at 10:25 a.m. We'll let you know when the road is clear again.

Calif. Casino Welfare Update:

Further to the story we posted in this column earlier today, it's just been reported by the L.A. Times that California welfare recipients withdrew more than $1.8 million in taxpayer cash on casino floors between October 2009 and May 2010. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger issued an executive order today requiring welfare recipients to sign a pledge that they will use their cash benefits only to "meet the basic subsistence needs" of their families.

Clark County officials have issued an air-quality alert for today after unhealthy levels of ozone were recorded in the valley during the early afternoon. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activity, especially if you suffer from any respiratory disease.

Cali Cracks Down on Welfare Gamblers:

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger promised to take immediate action when he learned this week that welfare debit cards, provided by the Department of Social Services to help recipients feed and clothe their families, work in automated teller machines at 32 of 58 tribal casinos and 47 of 90 state-licensed poker rooms in California. "We have instructed our vendors to prohibit these cards from being accepted at ATMs located in casinos and card rooms," a spokesman said Wednesday. Officials also said they were working to determine how much money had been withdrawn from casino ATMs by people using the welfare debit cards.

American Wins Tennis Marathon:

After an epic and record-breaking three days, American John Isner this morning won the longest tennis match on record by beating Nicolas Mahut 70-68 in the final set at Wimbledon. Picking up at 59-59 in the fifth set Thursday, the match continued on serve with no break points for over eight hours until Isner hit a backhand passing shot to finish the contest in front of a packed crowd. Isner finished with a total of 112 aces and Muhat 103.

Blair Back in Action:

The players just took their seats for Event #43, the $10K H.O.R.S.E. World Championship. As Poker News put it in their WSOP online feed, "We'd normally write a 'who's here' post right about now, but it might be easier to write a 'who's not here' post instead. The cream of the crop has turned out for this event, with every table full of talent, skill, patches and bracelets," with HP author Blair Rodman among them. Go Blair!

Another World Cup Update:

With both Team U.S.A. and the U.K. through to the next round of the World Cup, more venues are throwing in their lot with soccer for the duration, so check out the newly updated viewing guide at LVASports.com.

Adieu Moulin Rouge:

The end is in sight for the historic racially integrated casino, with demolition work on some parts of the property slated for as early as tomorrow, following permission from the Las Vegas Historic Preservation Commission to raze what's left of the fire-damaged structure. Current owner Olympic Coast Investments is still seeking a buyer for the property.

Plan for Lake Las Vegas:

After two years in bankruptcy, a judge has approved a reorganization plan for Lake Las Vegas that wipes out old debt and gives the project a second chance. Credit Suisse, the project's biggest creditor, has agreed to accept equity in the resort community.

Riverboat Casino Actually Sails:

It's been 11 years since the Par-A-Dice Riverboat Casino last moved, but this morning it released its mooring cables on the Illinois and headed out into open water on a three-hour cruise to comply with new U.S. Coast Guard requirements that require an annual seaworthiness check. The Par-A-Dice used to cruise 10 times a day but stopped in 1999.

Bad Beat for Blair:

Kill Phil author Blair Rodman made his second final table of the 2010 WSOP last night, finishing eighth in the $10K Pot-Limit Hold'em event. Here's how his last hand went down, via @blairrodman: "Brutal ending to a very long 3 days. KJ in BB. SB raises I call. Flop K J 7. We get it all in and he shows KK. Ugh. 8th for 72k." Ouch. After three grueling days, he'll be taking a couple off, but we'll let you know when Blair's back in action and you can follow him on Twitter.

New Exhibit for Hard Rock:

Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor is to be honored with a rock & roll memorabilia showcase at the Hard Rock, to be unveiled July 15th. The case will feature masks and uniforms that Taylor has worn on stage, as well as plaques, photographs, and other collectibles. To celebrate the honor, Taylor will perform two solo shows at the Hard Rock, the first poolside on July 16th with his Junk Beer Kidnap Band, followed by a solo acoustic set July 17th at Wasted Space.

Sunday's LA Times ran an interesting feature about the rival Cali-Vegas rail projects currently on the drawing board and the likelihood of them coming to fruition.

Trophies at the Palms:

On Wednesday night, actor and comedian Jay Mohr is set to host the 2010 NHL Awards at The Palms Hotel in Las Vegas, with the Goo Goo Dolls headling the musical acts. Even if you don't have tickets to the big event, there's still good news for hockey players, as from 5 p.m. tonight you'll be able to get up close and personal with the Stanley Cup, which will be on display exclusively in the main lobby at the Palms through noon tomorrow, along with 15 other notable hockey trophies.

Calling All Blue Men (and Women):

Blue Man Group is holding an open call for new performers on Monday, July 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Blue Man Group Theater inside The Venetian. The open call is part of a national search and interested applicants need to possess the following attributes: Height between 5'10" and 6'1" tall (athletic build); solid drumming skills; excellent acting skills; willingness to relocate. Both qualified males and females are encouraged to apply (to date, there has been at least one "Blue Woman" that we know of).

Grandma Lee Returns:

The outrageous septuagenarian will be bringing her unique brand of uncensored humor back to the Bonkerz Comedy Club at Palace Station for a run lasting July 5 through Sept. 4 nightly (dark Sunday). Tickets are $34.95, with Station Casinos hotel guests and locals with valid Nevada ID receiving a $15 discount. In September, former Excalibur headliner Louie Anderson is set to take over the venue.

Missing Link:

Dunham Back to Caesars:

Chart-topping comedian Jeff Dunham returns to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace Saturday, Sept. 3. Tickets, which start at $49.50, go on-sale June 26 at 10 a.m. and are available from all Ticketmaster outlets and the Box Office at The Colosseum.

WSOP Attendance Up:

This year's World Series of Poker continues to draw increased participation. Through 33 events, attendance is up 10.2% over 2009. However, prize money is down 1.9%. The situation mirrors the general state of the Las Vegas recovery: more people spending less.

Nighttime Lane Closures:

From June 21 through June 24 from 9 p.m.-6 a.m. nightly, one westbound lane on Tropicana Ave. will be closed and one southbound lane on Koval Lane will be closed , while left turn lanes on Trop and Koval will be reduced to one lane and pedestrian traffic rerouted to ensure a safe walk path while manhole covers are replaced.

New Farmers Market:

fresh52 - Farmers & Artisans Market (Sansone Park Place, 9480 S. Eastern Ave.) celebrates its grand opening today with in-season produce, freshly-baked goods, handmade craft,s and artwork from local artisans. The new market will be open 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday.

Happy Father's Day:

If you're eating out, you'll find Father's Day deals in the restaurants all over town. Surprisingly, we haven't seen any mainstream gambling promotions advertised, although you're likely to find offers if you check your slot club mailers.

More Crown:

Following tonight's Devo concert, the Crown Theater and Nightclub at the Rio will have its official grand opening. The doors open at 10:30 p.m. with free champagne till 11:30.

Another Smash:

Las Vegas' second Smashburger has opened on the west side of town at 9109 W. Sahara. The Denver-based burger restaurant has gotten good reviews since opening its first Smashburger in March.

Soccer Shirts:

Here's another reason to watch the World Cup at the LV Hilton. According to "The Player's Edge" column in today's LV Review-Journal, you get a free T-shirt if you make a $25 wager. The offer is good till July 11.

Big Names in Small Venues:

Two interesting concert opportunities are availble tonight. Devo opens the new Crown Theater at the Rio; tickets are $82. And Dave Mason plays the Rocks Lounge at Red Rock Resort; tickets are just $20.

June Birthdays Drink Free:

If your birthday is any day in June, you can drink free from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. tonight in McFadden's at the Rio. If you weren't born in June, you can partake for $10 women and $20 men.

Nevada's unemployment rate hit 14 percent last month, pushing it ahead of Michigan to lead the nation in joblessness and setting a new record for Nevada.

It's been an interesting week for Huntington Press authors, with Steve Cyr (Whale Hunt in the Desert) boxing at the Hard Rock (he was defeated -- sorry, Steve), Denny Griffin (Culotta, The Battle for Las Vegas, etc.) hosting his new "Crime Wire" show on Blog Talk Radio, and now for something really different, as blackjack legend Arnold "the Bishop" Snyder, author of our Topless Vegas guide, MCs the inaugural Wet Panty Auction at Little Darlings totally nude club tonight from 11 p.m. We're not sure what to expect, but Arnold (who's also an ex-standup comic) is providing squirt guns and rates the club as one of the sexiest in town. One way or another, it promises to be a memorable night... Cover $30, $10 for locals.

Cruzan Campfire Concerts:

Added to the proliferation of new pool parties this summer is a new raft of concert series, including the Palms' "Campfire" sessions, sponsored by Cruzan rum, that kick off tonight with a performance by Spin Doctors. Concert Canceled:

The LeAnn Rimes concert originally scheduled for July 16 at the new Crown Theater inside the Rio has been canceled. There is no replacement date at this time. Seek refunds at the point of purchase.

Bellagio Jet-Ski Stunt Backfires:

Sir Richard Branson ended up with a soaking wet tuxedo this afternoon when a planned jet-ski stunt in the Bellagio Fountain went awry, dumping the airline mogul and his flight attendant driver in the lake. Silver Strike Reminder:

R.I.P. Tupac:

It's the birthday of rapper Tupac Shakur, who would have been thirty-nine years old today, had he not been gunned down in Las Vegas in 1996. Celebrity Memorabilia Auction:

Julien's, the auction house responsible for numerous celebrity-memorabilia sales, will host one this June 24-27 at Planet Hollywood, featuring items previously belonging to Michael Jackson, including furniture, stage clothes, and handwritten lyrics. Guitars played onstage by Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley are also expected to be up for grabs, along with a Mercedes owned by Anna Nicole Smith, and dozens of personal items from Cher, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, and "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry's estate.

Spirit Strike to End:

Details have yet to be released, but a union representative confirmed today that a deal has been made with pilots to end the five-day-old walkout that has grounded all Spirit flights. The union and airline are still finalizing the details of when pilots will return to flying, however.

Wind Advisory:

Seems we haven't seen the last of the recent high winds yet, with an advisory in effect until 9 p.m. tonight for all of southern Nevada, including Lake Mead and the Spring Mountains. Southwest winds of between 20 and 30 mph are forecast, with gusts over 40 mph.

ESPN Zone Closed:

Yesterday was the final day in operation for the sports lounge at New York-New York, but there are still plenty of options for catching the game -- check out all the Sports Bars & Pubs in our "Shows & Nightlife" section.

Missouri Casinos to Go 24/7:

A consequence of the closure of the President Casino in St. Louis next month is that the Missouri Gaming Commission's enforcement agents will no longer be stretched too thin, meaning the states' half-dozen-or-so remaining casinos will be able to operate around the clock.

Sir Richard Branson was in town yesterday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Virgin Atlantic flights between London and Las Veags. During the day he was joined by Mayor Oscar Goodman and Dita Von Teese to unveil a plane featuring a flying lady on the outside of the aircraft in the iconic guise of the bulesque star. In the evening he attentended Cirque's Viva Elvis show at Aria, even appearing on stage for a cameo.

While conducting our monthly phone-around to all Las Vegas buffets and brunch venues, we just learned of another Venetian dining casualty, namely the popular brunch at Zeffirino, which was served for the last time on Sunday.

Layoffs at Wynn:

Steve Wynn just announced 261 layoffs at Wynn and Encore to "reduce overstaffing." Apparently, 3,700 part-time employees will be returning to full-time positions as a result of the move.

Silver Lining for Silver State:

It seems there's some positive fallout from the record foreclosure and unemployment rates in Nevada -- the Silver State just ranked #5 on the list of Best States for Business in the latest issue of Chief Executive magazine, thanks in part to cheap real estate and abundant labor. Other factors in our favor include the relatively low cost of living and state taxation structure (California came in last, not least because of its high income and sales taxes).

Not the property, but the name: According to a report by Channel 8, shareholders have approved changing the company name of MGM Mirage to MGM Resorts International to "better represent the growing global presence our company has today", said Chairman and CEO Jim Murren.

Looking for work? Rumor, the new "boutique" resort from Siegel Group, is hosting a job fair this Wed., June 16 to immediately fill nearly 50 open positions including cooks, stewards/dishwashers, guest-room attendants, food servers, and security officers. The job fair will be held from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. at Alexis Park's Apollo Rooms. Applicants should bring a copy of their resume. The 150-room property is set to open by the end of the month.

Louie on the Move:

After the surprise announcement last week that Strip headliner Louie Anderson was leaving Excalibur, comes official word that he'll be moving his show to headline at the Bonkerz Comedy Club venue at Palace Station, which will be renamed and rethemed in his honor. The comedian says his love of performing in a comedy club-style venue spurred the move. Anderson will also be bringing his "Standup Boot Camp" to Palace Station this summer.

Spirit Strike Strands Passengers:

A strike by Spirit Airlines pilots that's into its third day has left passengers stranded passengers across the U.S., including at McCarran International Airport. All flights for the airline are grounded through Tuesday. The airline says will be offering full refunds, plus a $100 credit towards a future flight for passengers affected by the strike.

Cantor to Take Trop Sports Book:

Cantor Gaming will run the Tropicana sports book when it reopens this fall. Cantor, which is expanding its presence in Las Vegas, currenty runs the book at M Resort, and has deals for its mobile gaming product at Venetian/Palazzo and Hard Rock.

World Cup Viewing:

We tried a few places since the World Cup began. Very good are all the Brit pubs (both Crown & Anchors, McMullen's, etc.), except, perhaps, when England is playing. The crowds during England games are out the door, so you have to get there several hours ahead to have a chance at a seat. The scene will likely be similar at the Hofbrauhaus for today's Germany/Australia match. Despite promoting parties, we found PTs and Big Dog's docile (though there's a good $2-beer deal at the latter). Best overall might be Lagasse's Stadium at Palazzo. There'll be a hefty minimum (usually $50 per head) if you want one of the prime viewing couches, but you can set up at the bar or just drift around for an excellent viewing experience.

USA Today on Vegas Pools:

There's a good write-up on the pool scene in this weekend's edition of USA Today. There's also an online link at USAToday.com with good information, though not as good or complete as our own "Cool Pools" section.

Dollar Drinks at South Point:

Bloody Marys or mimosas are just $1 from 6 a.m. to noon at South Point. The deal is offered at all casino bars and in the coffee shop. You can also get one free drink when you purchase a breakfast or brunch buffet.

Pawn Stars Auction:

The History Channel has teamed with eBay to host an online charity auction with the cast of Las Vegas' "Pawn Stars" show. Bidding begins June 14 at 10 p.m. ET on ebay.com/pawnstars. The winning bidder will enjoy an action-packed weekend in Las Vegas featuring a stay at The Palms and dinner with the "Pawn Stars" cast at one of the resort’s gourmet restaurants, followed by a poker tournament. The next day includes an internship at the pawn shop beside The Old Man, Rick, Corey, and ChumleeRound-trip air and limo service to and from the resort are also included in the prize package. The charity auction will run for 10 days, ending Thursday, June 24. All proceeds will be donated to the YMCA of Southern Nevada.

New Trivia Night:

Murphy’s Law Bar & Grill (1590 E. Flamingo Rd.) has launched new trivia quiz night on Sundays from 7-9 p.m. Guests in teams of two or more can test their knowledge on a wide range of pop culture topics including sports, movies, and music with the night’s first and second place winners receiving food and beverage certificates.

Free Beer (maybe):

Patrons watching the England/USA World Cub match at a PTs bar will get a free Budweiser every time the U.S. scores a goal. Good idea, but don't go in expecting too many freebies -- the line on total goals scored for both teams in this game is 2.5. A variation at Todd English P.U.B. offers a pint of beer and a shot when a goal is scored, but only if you're wearing the jersey of the scoring team. Strategies? England is favored, so wearing the England jersey yields the best potential. Or maybe just wear one jersey on top of the other.

Beer and Love at Big Dog's:

In celebration of its 22nd birthday, Big Dog's Brewing Company (4543. N. Rancho) hosts its first on-site beer festival today from 3-9 p.m. "Peace, Love, and Hoppyness" will feature live music, BBQ, more than 16 beers to sample, available in 3oz ($1), 6oz ($2), and 12+oz ($4) measures, and a raffle for prizes including a Gibson electric guitar.

Rock Band at Bill's:

Today from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Bill's Gamblin' Hall & Saloon is the venue for the next round in Harrah's Entertainment and MTV Games' Rock Band contest. Rock Band bands from around the US and Canada are vying for a chance to compete at the big event in Atlantic City July 1-2, where the winning band will take home $10K and get to meet Ringo Starr. This is Las Vegas' only qualifying date.

Yesterday, Wynn/Encore introduced a new $20/night resort fee. When we called to inquire what it covered, the policy was so new that no one knew; today, we can confirm that the amenities covered by the fee include Internet access (including WiFi), local/long distant/domestic calls, access to the fitness center, and boarding pass printing.

Vegas Chef Runner Up:

rm Seafood's Rick Moonen finished second on last night's Season 2 finale of "Top Chef Masters", finishing just a half-point behind chef Marcus Samuelsson. According to Robin Leach's Vegas Deluxe column, the two top chefs will now work alongside each other on June 23 at RM Seafood, with a cooking demo followed by the dinner they served the judges on last night's Bravo show.

Wynn Introduces Resort Fees:

We heard a rumor and just received confirmation from an apologetic concierge that as of today, Wynn and Encore have introduced a $20/night resort fee. The person with whom we spoke said that it didn't actually cover any amenities, like Internet service, but was just an additional $20/night fee. Wow. The fee will not be applied retroactively to existing reservations, but will be applied to all bookings as of today.

France Legalizes Online Gambling:

France officially sanctioned online gambling this week, relaxing a state monopoly on gambling that dates back to the 16th century. 17 licences were granted to 11 operators in time for the start of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Currently horse racing and betting on organised sports events is covered by the new legislation; online poker will be authorized later this month.

Trop Gets eDeck:

The Tropicana will be the next Las Vegas casino to get Cantor Gaming's mobile gaming technology in a new state-of-the-art race and sports book that's expected to open this fall. Cantor Gaming's eDeck, currently available at properties including the Venetian/Palazzo, M Resort, and Hard Rock, enables guests to play a selection of casino games, including games developed exclusively by Cantor Gaming, and enables people to place wagers directly from their seats in the sports book at any time during a sporting event.

New Comedy Club for Trop:

Brad Garrett, who was formerly a regular at the Mirage, is opening his own comedy club at the Tropicana this June 28. He'll perform through July 4, with subsequent headliners scheduled for this year including Kevin Nealon, Dom Irrera, Bob Zany, Rondell Sheridan, and Rocky LaPorte. Tickets start at $39.

Free Tacos at Stoney's:

Stoney's North Forty now has a happy hour from 3-7 p.m., Monday through Friday, with 2-for-1 drinks and free tacos with the purchase of any beverage.

El Cortez Design Contest:

The El Cortez Hotel & Casino, in conjunction with the Las Vegas Design Center, has launched a competition for local Las Vegas interior designers to have a shot at remodeling several of the property's luxury suites. The "Design A Suite Downtown" competition calls for entries from all interior designers, architects, and teams with at least one member licensed in the State of Nevada. The top four finalists will have the opportunity to make their design come to life by redesigning one suite each. One winner will be selected from the final four and will have the opportunity to remodel the remaining suites, which will be unveiled during the hotel's 70th anniversary celebration next year. There's a $150 tax-deductible entry fee that will be donated to Keep Memory Alive with each submission. Click here for more details and to download an entry form.

ESPN Zone to Close:

Disney is closing five of its seven ESPN Zone locations, including those in Las Vegas and Times Square, on June 16, citing declining visitation and high rent at the brand's high-profile locations making it increasingly difficult to operate the sports-themed restaurants profitably. So, that'll be one less venue for catching the World Cup action, but there are plenty of others -- look out for an upcoming feature at LVASports.com.

Gaming Revenue Down Again:

Statewide gaming revenues were down almost 6 percent in Nevada in April, although the figure for the Strip was less than 1 percent. The Boulder Strip fared worst, with a 25.5 percent decline in gaming revenues. According to the latest figures from the LVCVA, April visitation was up by just under 1 percent however, making it the eighth straight month to see an increase.

Puck Hearts Locals:

Now through Sept. 30, locals can enjoy 20% off their food check at all Wolfgang Puck Las Vegas restaurants, including Spago (Forum Shops), CUT (Palazzo), Trattoria del Lupo (Mandalay Bay), Postrio (Grand Canal Shoppes), and Wolfgang Puck Pizzeria & Cucina at Crystals inside CityCenter. The offer's good seven days a week for lunch and dinner; show a local I.D. to your waiter.

Foxwoods President Quits:

After less than two years on the job, Michael Speller has resigned as president of Foxwoods Resort Casino "to pursue other career opportunities." The casino is currently trying to renegotiate $2 billion in debt stemming from an ill-timed expansion. Speller's only the most recent casualty in the position; his two predecessors lasted less than a year and eighteen months, respectively.

Blair Killed Phil!:

Huntington Press author Blair Rodman put his money where his mouth is and "killed Phil" last night, knocking Hellmuth Jr. out of the $10K Stud event at the WSOP. Blair's currently two places out of the money; play resumes at 3:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the voting remains open until June 15 for your nominations for seats at the WSOP Tournament of Champions, so if you haven't already, we'd really appreciate it if you could vote for Blair!

Louie Anderson Quits:

MGM Mirage has confirmed that comedian Louie Anderson will end his Larger Than Life show at Excalibur Aug. 1 after nearly a quarter-century run. We understand his intention is to take the show on the road.

New Movie Theater at Hilton:

We just learned that very quietly (silently, in fact), the Las Vegas Hilton opened a new movie theater two weeks ago. The Giordano Theater will apparently present film series showcasing four different movies weekly, with seven showtimes throughout the day beginning at 10:45 a.m. Movie tickets are $12 and include unlimited popcorn, and light dining and cocktails are also available. Bethlehem Hotel Back in Action:

Construction at Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem in Pennsylvania has resumed after an 18-month recession-induced hiatus and a spokesman for the property said that construction of its 3,000-seat concert and conference center could be underway by year's end. No time frame has been announced for resuming work on a mall planned for the casino site.

Irwin Croc Project Back On?:

Before Australian naturalist Steve Irwin was tragically killed by a stingray in 2006, he had been in discussion with various parties about bringing an ambitious crocodile exhibit to the Las Vegas Strip. Big Walgreens for the Strip:

A two-acre parcel across the Strip from CityCenter that was recently purchased for $25 million will be the home of a new Walgreens Pharmacy. Walgreens will be the anchor tenant for a three-story 100,000-square-foot retail center on the parcel. No schedule for construction has been released.

Free Drink at Crown:

Get a free drink at the new Crown nightclub at the Rio by mentioning Bluff Magazine. The poker mag has a deal with the club that runs until July 17.

GC Jazz Band Gone:

After a 23-year run, the Las Vegas Classic Jazz Band is no longer playing the lounge at the Gold Coast. The band had played there since the day the casino opened.

Lots of Vegas in Greek:

The new movie Get Him to the Greek includes extensive Las Vegas filming. We haven't seen it yet, but it's being compared with The Hangover, both for Las Vegas exposure and raunchiness.

Red Rock Yard House Opens Today:

Las Vegas' second Yard House (the other is in Town Square) opens today at Red Rock Resort. It's located back near the sports book in the area that used to be the Salt Lick Barbecue. This place is amazing, boasting 130 beers on tap. There's also a big food menu.

Belmont Result:

Long shot Drosselmeyer won yesterday's Belmont Stakes, paying $28.00. Only a third-place finish by First Dude prevented nine different horses finishing in the first three spots at the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont, which last happened in 1928.

MJ Casino for Indiana?:

According to The Guardian newspaper, Joe Jackson, Michael Jackson's father, unveiled plans yesterday to build a complex in memory of his son, which may include a casino. Jackson said he hoped the complex would bring significant jobs to Gary, Indiana, where Michael was born. A feasibility study into the project has yet to be conducted.

Oasis Demolition Planned:

After some vacillating, Black Gaming has confirmed that it will demolish part of its Oasis resort in Mesquite. Plans call for the casino and more than half of Oasis' 900 rooms to be destroyed.

Boz Skaggs plays Mandalay Beach tonight. The concert begins at 9 and $39.50 tickets are available. These concerts are fun; bring your flip-flops.

Macau Growth Continues:

Bloomberg reports that gambling revenue in Macau almost doubled in May, rising from approximately 17 billion patacas ($2.12 billion) from 8.8 billion patacas a year earlier. It's been four years since the Chinese casino enclave surpassed Las Vegas as the biggest gambling hub in the world.

Barbara Greenspun Passes:

The widow of Vegas publishing tycoon Hank Greenspun, who took over as publisher of the Las Vegas Sun following his death, died yesterday aged 88. She was known as a great philanthropist who'd been very active in the community throughout her life.

Brugnara Smackdown:

Ever wonder what became of would-be Strip player Luke Brugnara? The San Francisco real estate man who, on multiple occasions, announced big plans that never materialized may finally be out of the Las Vegas game for good. The saga is detailed by John L. Smith in his column in today's LV Review-Journal.

Mizrachi Wins PPC:

Michael "the Grinder" Mizrachi is the winner of the inaugural $50,000 buy-in Poker Players Championship (formerly H.O.R.S.E.). On his way to a $1,559,046 prize, Mizrachi defeated his brother, Robert, who also made the final table and finished fifth. It was the highest finish by two family members in WSOP history. The runner-up was Vladimir Schemelev from Russia.
