Today is our state's national day, which used to be celebrated on October 31, but since 2000 has taken place on the last Friday in October. The highlight of the festivities is the annual Nevada Day Parade in Carson City, which takes place tomorrow. The theme for 2010 is "100 Years of Aviation in Nevada".
In Las Vegas, this year will mark the first in many that Former Nevada Lt. Gov. Lonnie Hammargren will not open his home to the public this Oct. 31 for tours and free ice cream, ending a long-standing Nevada Day tradition. In a statement, he said the decision was due to illness and a "very complicated legal situation," apparently stemming from complaints from neighbors and questions about whether the eccentric home, which is full of Las Vegas memorabilia and other artifacts, is up to county code.
Work to Resume on Stalled A.C. Casino:

Work is due to recommence Monday on the $2 billion Revel resort-casino in Atlantic City, which has been on ice since January 2009, a victim of the economic downturn. CEO Kevin DeSanctis is currently pitching the project to Wall Street, hoping to raise the $1 billion still needed to complete the resort.

For all users of the Las Vegas Advisor forums, after a few weeks of Beta testing a new environment, we have what we hope is at least good interim news. As Anthony Curtis writes, "We honestly thought the Zoho solution was the right one, but it definitely wasn't. We've switched back to our original boards, but will continue to look for a better alternative. We need to up the speed and I don't think it can be done without moving to a different environment. The good thing is we learned a lot about what we have to preserve in any future moves. Thanks for hanging in there. We're trying. I'm wide open to suggestions here following this misstep."
The complication when it comes to switching to a platform like the VBulletin boards we have at LVASports.com is that the Members-Only LVA boards are part of the subscription package you pay for, and Zoho was the only solution we could find that could handle this component; but we'll keep looking or, if necessary, have our own program designed to interface with our other membership systems. In the meantime, bear with us and tell your forum friends it's safe to go back in the water!

The popular Disney production at Mandalay Bay was just given a 14-month extension and will now end its run on the Las Vegas Strip on Dec. 30, 2011. When it closes, the Las Vegas Lion King will have had the longest run aside from the Broadway original.
South Point to be Basketball Central:

For the second straight year, South Point will host thirteen days of college basketball action, including "The Great Western Shootout," "Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic," "D3Hoops.com Classic," plus a game featuring two of the top high school programs in the country. There are various events going on around town for NHRA Week. Tonight, meet star drivers for a two-hour autograph-signing and Q&A session in front of the Third Street Stage at the Fremont Street Experience from 6-8 p.m.
It's a busy night for Funny Car driver Melanie Troxel, who'll be among the drivers downtown. At 9 p.m. she's challenging the rest of the drivers in the NHRA's nitro categories to do the 108-story free fall "SkyJump" from the top of the Stratosphere Tower to raise money for Speedway Children's Charities. The Strat is hosting NHRA-related events all week, including a display of race cars in the casino, driver appearances, and drink specials.

No sooner did we report that Las Vegas is to receive a branch of New York's legendary P.J. Clarke's, than we read in the New York Times that Manhatten is about to be graced with its own Lotus of Siam, the Las Vegas original of which has been celebrated as having the "Best Thai Food" in N. America by Gourmet magazine. The East Coast version, due to open November on lower Fifth Avenue in the spot formerly occupied by Cru, will feature a menu about one-third the size of the Las Vegas menu, which features some 150 dishes, and higher prices, due to the pressures of New York rent levels.

P.J. Clarke's, the famous New York watering hole established in 1884, will open its first West Coast location this December in the Forum Shops at Caesars. The décor will feature bone fide saloon fixtures, including a solid mahogany bar imported from France, reclaimed subway tile, and authentic Victorian and '40s light fittings. Sister properties already exist in D.C. and in São Paolo, Brazil.

The Atlantic City casino has been in the news alot lately; the latest is a report that three percent of the workforce, estimated to equate to about 200 jobs, was cut this week in response to declining business. Collectively, the East Coast gambling destination already axed a total of 1,400 casino jobs in September, partly due to an annual seasonal downsizing, but also because of the economic downturn and increased competition from Pennsylvania.

The troubled Foxwoods casino project in Philadelphia now has interest from Harrah's Entertainment, which has signed a non-binding agreement to operate the planned $438 million casino. Earlier this year Wynn resorts signed deal to operate the project, planned since 2006, but then quickly backed out of the project.

The RTC has unveiled its new $17 million commuter hub for the Max, Centennial Express, Ace, Deuce, Las Vegas Strip, and downtown Las Vegas express buses. The Washington Post reports that Las Vegas Sands Inc. has signed a 10-year deal with hotelier InterContinental, owner of the Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, and other brands. The deal will give Sands access to InterContinental's 52-million-member database and give their loyal customers an option to stay on the Las Vegas Strip and earn or redeem rewards points. The partnership is similar to one recently announced between the soon-to-debut Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas and Marriott International (see Today's News for Aug. 26, 2010).

The Las Vegas Tropicana, which is currently undergoing a frenzy of upgrading and rebranding, announced the latest plans today for the Tiffany Theatre, which has been taken over Eagle Group Holdings, owner of the soon-to-debut Las Vegas Mob Experience. There are plans to turn the theater into a premier entertainment venue, with Yesterday, a Beatles tribute that ran for three years at the Trop Atlantic City, the first show to be announced. Yesterday is performing Tuesday through Sunday, at 5:30pm. For tickets and information, call the box office at 702/739-2417.
Vegas to Honor Vargas:

This December 9, boxer Fernando Vargas will become the first fighter to be honored with a star on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars. A ceremony is planned at Encore and the star will be placed that day somewhere on the Las Vegas Strip. A Walk of Stars spokesman says stars have also been approved for Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao, but ceremonies have not yet been set.
Boyd Not Interested in Borgata:

Boyd Gaming, operator and half-owner of the Borgata resort-casino in Atlantic City, said it will not exercise its right of first refusal to bid on the other 50-percent share being sold by MRI. "Given other opportunities and our current focus on deleveraging our balance sheet, the current offer would not provide a sufficient return on investment for our shareholders," the company said today in a statement. An offer of $250 has been tabled by buyout firm Leonard Green & Partners.

Following word over the weekend of a fatal shooting during a robbery in the restrooms at the Opera House Casino in North Las Vegas, comes news of a stabbing at the Orleans at around 9 a.m. this morning, during which a man carrying deposit bags was injured and robbed. The Gift of Lights holiday display, hosted for the past nine years by Sunset Park, is moving to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the 2010 holiday season and will be the biggest display in the attraction's history. The speedway is donating the facility to the event organizers and $2 from every car visiting the experience will go to the Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities. The experience will open on Friday, Nov. 19 and run nightly through Sunday, Jan. 2.

The Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh is apologizing to slot players who were accidentally awarded $1,000 in free play this week as the result of a computer glitch. At one point on Monday afternoon, everyone with a player's card that was playing a slot machine received the credits, but within 10 minutes the error had been discovered and the credits deducted once more. It has not been revealed how much the casino stood to lose potentially had the error not been spotted.

According to Arizona Department of Transportation, the long-awaited Hoover Dam bypass bridge is now open to traffic. At 1,900 feet, the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge is the longest single-span concrete arch bridge in the western hemisphere. Vehicles traveling between Arizona and Nevada will no longer be able to use Hoover Dam.

Dan Harrington and Erik Seidel beat out Chris Ferguson, Barry Greenstein, Jennifer Harman-Traniello, Phil Ivey, Linda Johnson, Tom McEvoy, Daniel Negreanu, and Scotty Nguyen and will join the elite list of poker legends at a ceremony at the Rio on November 8. "Channel 8 News" reports that sometime between 11 a.m. and noon Sunday, Lake Mead sank to its lowest level in three-quarters of a century, when it was first filled. Although the lake is still eight feet above the level at which a shortage is officially declared and limited rationing could go into effect in Nevada and in Arizona, the Bureau of Reclamation is planning to increase the amount of water delivered to Lake Mead from Lake Powell.

The BMX rider and TV personality is reportedly showing signs of improvement after a serious accident Thursday night at the Dew Tour Championships at the Hard Rock. Lavin, a Vegas native, has been in a medically-induced coma since he crashed, but his mother texted a friend over the weekend, saying "Neuro came and spoke to T.J. He moved his hands around and he gave the docs a thumbs up. He is not conscious. He's back on sedation to rest and minimize brain swelling." We wish him the best.

The public gets its first experience atop the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge over the Colorado River at Hoover Dam today, with a six-hour open house (reservations are required and this list is now closed). Expect traffic delays in the area. The bridge is due to open to vehicular traffic in approximately two weeks and is expected to take an hour off the travel time from Arizona to Las Vegas.

New Jersey casino regulators on Thursday approved the sale of land underneath the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, as part of MRI's forced exit from the New Jersey gambling market. The Casino Control Commission approved the sale of 11.3 acres to Vornado Realty Trust and Geyser Holdings, through their newly formed company New Jersey GL LLC, for $73 million.

Professional BMX dirt rider and TV host TJ Lavin is currently in a medically-induced coma at UMC after being seriously injured during the Dew Tour Championships in Las Vegas last night. Following news earlier in the week of George Maloof's DUI incident comes word that a dispute has erupted between the Palms and the N9NE Group, who are partners in several nightlife and restaurant venues at the off-Strip property. At the crux of the argument, which appears to be getting ugly, is the accusation that N9NE's opening of a new venue at Wynn Las Vegas constitutes a conflict of interest and that staff at the Palms venues have been neglecting their duties in order to work on the new project. Today's LV Sun reports that Greenheart Conservation Co. Ltd., the company behind the zipline ride at Bootleg Canyon in Boulder City, will debut a similar attraction at the Fremont Street Experience downtown tomorrow. Four lines have been installed that will move riders 800 feet from the Fremont Street parking garage to a 14-foot-high landing platform near one of the FSE's performance stages. We understand riders will be charged $20 from 6 p.m. to midnight, $15 from 2-6 p.m., and $10 for a re-ride, but this is not confirmed and may change.

After winning the first coup (a bet on red) to turn the $125,000 into $250,000, the second spin landed on red again with everything riding on black. Regardless, the $250,000 bet surpasses a $220,000 wager on roulette made at Binion's Horseshoe in 1994 as the biggest roulette bet on record. These sites are all scams and you are being ripped off if you give them money.

The Siena Hotel Spa Casino in downtown Reno is temporarily closing its casino but keeping its hotel, restaurants, and sports book open, reports the Reno Gazette-Journal. The Siena filed for bankruptcy protection in August in a move to keep the property open while a deal to bring in a partner to run it can be finalized; it has been struggling to maintain its casino license due to lack of requisite funds. According to papers filed with U.S. Bankruptcy Court, the Siena's overall debt could be as much as $100 million.

There seems to have been a bizarre spate of planes and helicopters crashing or being forced to do emergency landings in residential areas this year. The latest incident was reported by Channel 8's "Eyewitness News," which relates how Metro is reporting that a small plane carrying two people is down in the area of Blue Diamond and Grand Canyon. Police say the plane was having engine problems and was attempting to make an emergency landing on SR160. No word yet as to whether anyone was injured.

The latest stats released by the LVCVA show that Las Vegas visitor volume was up for the 12th consecutive month in August, with 3.5 million tourists coming through Southern Nevada, a 3.5 percent increase on the same month last year.
In even better news, the State Gaming Control Board reports that gaming revenues were also up in August, with an 11.5 percent increase, which ended a five-month trend of declines.

Bloomberg reports that Penn National Gaming Inc. and Leonard Green & Partners LP have submitted offers for the M Resort Spa Casino, according to people with knowledge of the sale. The latter's bid is in partnership with the Marnell family that built the $1 billion development. The bidders have apparently submitted final offers for the 390-room property after multiple auction rounds; the resort is set to be sold for a fraction of its $1 billion cost, according to one of the sources.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board today voted to recommended approval of a gaming license for the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. It's not a mass-suicide, but rather part of an effort to raise money for the Special Olympics in Nevada. Sometime tomorrow (we're not sure when, but think early in the morning), more than 40 people, including UFC champ Frank Mir and magician Nathan Burton, will rappel down the Rio hotel tower as part of an event dubbed "Over the Edge." So, don't be alarmed if you happen to be staying at the hotel and see a stranger outside your window. All those taking part were required to raise a minimum of $1,000 to participate. The attached complaint accuses Donny of being "underhanded, devious, fraudulent and greedy" and Marie of being guilty of the same through her acquiescence. The brother-sister act has yet to respond to the allegations.

Today's L.A. Times contains an interesting article about the future of smartphones and how the functionality they offer will soon be an itegral part of visitors' Las Vegas experience. MRI offers apps for all its Strip hotels, from Mandalay Bay to Circus Circus, although currently only for Apple's smartphone, while Caesars Palace currently offers a GPS-driven app for iPhone and Droid. "We want to make sure that when you're enjoying your stay at Caesars Palace, all of the information we can offer you is available in your pocket. The National Weather Service has issued a severe storm warning for southern Nevada tonight. McCarran International Airport reports that several outbound and inbound flights have already been delayed due to the storm system, which also sparked a flash flood warning in northeast Clark County until 4:30 p.m.
Access to Lake Mead Recreation Area was closed at Boulder Beach, Lake Mead Parkway, Lake Mead Boulevard, Lakeshore Road, Northshore Road, and Overton and the National Park Service has reported flooding in much of the park and debris covering roads leading to the lake. Producer Chip Lightman is suing performers Donny & Marie, whose show performs at the Flamingo. The sibling duo claim that their contract with the ex-Danny Gans producer is up and that they don't intend to renew; Lightman claims they have two years left to run and is threatening to cooperate with a "tell-all" book.
Meanwhile, singer Marley Taylor has announced her departure from Zowie Bowie, which performed its last gig with her at Red Rock last Friday. Taylor split with ZB partner Chris Philips some months back, but the pair had continued to perform together. The singer is now pursuing other interests with The David Perrico Group, which just landed a residency at the Tropicana (see September issue of the Las Vegas Advisor newsletter -- members only).

We can confirm that the Cloud Nine balloon ride is back in action after a long hiatus due to severe storm damage earlier this year. The re-launch was postponed a couple of times, but the giant helium balloon opposite Mandalay Bay resumed operations last week. There will likely be no rides today, due to storm warnings, and for the next couple weeks the final ride will be at 6 p.m.; thereafter, the prior schedule of 10 a.m.-10 p.m. weekdays, and till midnight on Friday and Saturday, will be restored. At least that's the word from USA Today, who's weekend-edition list of "51 Great Burger Joints" list's a Reno product from Nevada. The Little Nugget Diner, located near the University of Nevada, has been in business since the early '50s and is known for its Awful Awful Burger, which costs $6.50.
