Atlantic City has finally begun to reverse its fortunes, posting a monthly revenue increase of 4.2 percent in December -- the first in three and a half years. The city's 11 casinos took in $246.5 million last month, with slot revenue was up 8.3 percent; table-game revenue still decreased by 4.3 percent, to $72.5 million. Atlantic City's casino win for the year was down 6.9 percent from 2010 -- the fifth consecutive year that revenue has declined.

Following the passing of a vote in the Senate Regulated Industries Committee Monday, Florida could become the fourth most-populous state in the U.S. to operate Las Vegas-style casinos, with table games and dealers, on land outside of tribal control. The vote was a step forward for Genting Malaysia, which hopes to build a $3.8 billion resort-casino complex on Miami’s Biscayne Bay. It's only a first step in the legalization process, which is being opposed by the Walt Disney Co. for fear it will lose business to this rival entertainment option.

N.J. Sports Betting Inches Closer:

New Jersey legislators passed a law Monday would make it legal to bet on race and sports in the state, pending federal approval, which is still a big "if". Twenty years ago the state missed a deadline that would have made it one of only five that have the right to permit residents to wager on professional or collegiate sporting events. The bill adopted by the state Senate and Assembly would allow New Jerseyans to place bets at the 11 Atlantic City casinos and the state's four horse racing tracks. Laws were also passed permitting horse-racing fans to place bets at bars and restaurants.

Dean Construction Inc., among others, has received court approval to purchase the bankrupt Las Vegas Mob Experience at the Trop, which ran up $20 million in debts during its first year of operations. The hotel has offered to grant several rent concessions to help the attraction get back on its feet, reports the R-J.

$4 Billion Loss for Casinos:

A report released Friday by the state Gaming Control Board reveals that Nevada’s largest casinos suffered a combined $4 billion loss in 2011. The report shows that the 256 casinos that grossed $1 million or more in gambling revenue for the fiscal year that ended June 30 had total revenue of $22 billion and posted a net loss of $3.9 billion, an increase of $0.5 billion on 2010's figures.

After 2 years of speculation and rumor, Van Halen has announced dates for an extensive U.S. tour that includes a stop at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 27. The band lineup will be the same one it featured during its 2007/2008 tour, with frontman David Lee Roth, guitarist Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alex Van Halen, and bassist Wolfgang Van Halen. Kool and the Gang will be the opening act for some of the dates.

Vegas Inc. has just reported that both the J.W. Marriott in Summerlin and Loews Lake Las Vegas have both defaulted on their debts. The latter, which was the only Lake Las Vegas property to remain open during the recession, has already been under the control of a receiver since 2009. To date, there's been no official statement from either hotel about their future.

The Playboy Comedy Club at the Palms has closed, confirms Robin Leach in the LV Sun. Dov Davidoff from "Chelsea Lately" was the final headliner during the New Year’s Eve weekend. With recent changes, including letting go all the official Bunny dealers, and news of a major staff meeting next Monday, there's speculation that the Playboy Club itself may also be on the way out. We'll keep you posted.

From Feb. 17 to 19, Las Vegas will play host to Formula 1's traveling roadshow, featuring F1 cars, drivers, and teams, exhibitions, concerts and parties, an exotic super-car show, and simulated races on the Las Vegas Strip. There will be a fan village, as there is at real Formula 1 races. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for children. Click here for a full schedule of events. The last time Las Vegas Las Vegas played host to F1 was when the Caesars Palace Grand Prix was held in 1981 and 1982. The race is remembered for all the wrong reasons: The race track was set up in the parking lot and was apparently one of the worst ever, causing mechanical failures and taking a physical toll on the drivers.

The property's estimated to be worth some $80 million and interested parties are required to put down a $2.5 million deposit in order to bid in the auction, which is expected to take place Feb. 17. The City's new "parking czar" has unveiled her plan for downtown, which apparently features lots of additional free and low-cost parking throughout and seeks to avoid the need for a new parking structure. Part of the plan also includes spending more than $4.5 million from the parking enterprise fund on upgrades to meters and customer service interfaces, reports the R-J.

Reuters reports that Macau's gambling revenue was up by 42 percent in 2011, fueled by Chinese high rollers mainly playing baccarat. Gross revenue from the 34 casinos in China's only legal gambling enclave totaled 267.87 billion patacas ($33.5 billion). Macau has been the biggest gambling market in the world since 2006, when it overtook Las Vegas.
